The first wave of Virtual Reality would undoubtedly be expensive for consumers. With the first Virtual Reality headsets like the Oculus Rift and the HTC Vive costing between $599 and $1500, they are out of the reach of a large section of the market.
But, with efforts from Google, you can get a taste or Virtual Reality for dirt-cheap, with its Google Cardboard Virtual Reality headset. Cardboard uses your phone as a display, and quite a few apps are supported.
Cardboard is probably going to be the first brush with Virtual Reality for many, and that’s why Google is continuously making it better. The quality for the display and content decide the quality for the experience. But many forget about the audio-part, and thus miss out on making Cardboard a lot more immersive.
Speaking of audio, Google says that Cardboard now supports spatial audio, i.e audio that fills your ear and helps you know where a sound is coming from, making it all much more immersive.
Of course, Cardboard is still an enclosure for strapping in your phone, and you don’t have to do anything to take advantage of these features.
