Giant Crack Appears In Earth In Mexico
A huge fissure has split open the earth in a rural Mexican town, stunning locals and scientists, who are still seeking to explain its origin.
The crack appeared last week and crosses Highway 26 between Hermosillo, in the northwest of Mexico, and the Gulf of California.
The fissure is the length of three quarters of a mile, about 26 feet deep and 16 feet wide.
Geologists are still investigating what could have caused the phenomenon.
The scientists said the crack may have been caused by an earthquake that struck the region the Sunday before.
Civil engineer Rafael Rodriguez, of Sonora University, said the incident may have been caused by a levee constructed by local farmers to contain rain water.
'This definitely is not cause for alarm for the local population,' Martin Moreno, another geologist, told El Manana newspaper.
Moreno said the underground stream could have undermined the earth above it and cause it to collapsed.
Local residents have been forced to go around the fissure until officials figure out a way to fix it.
