I has that nightmarish experience of travelling in a General compartment in
Mumbai once. When I got down successfully swimming against the inflow of
the passengers I felt squeezed out of shape and was in tears. :Cry:
Luckily I had all fingers and toes in tact. :hail:
In USA the boys and girls would run down the stairs to catch the metro -
even though the next one is sure to appear after just 2 minutes.
In all probability they had a friend (of the opposite sex) in that particular
train and HAD to get into it by sheer compulsion!
This is also a kind of evolution and adaption by the ladies.
They develop muscles by hanging on to the train for their dear lives.
They develop upholstery to escape dents, damages and fractures!

Dear Sir,
I can not stand crowds....so I generally avoid public transport.
I dare not ever travel in peak hours! No way man!
Not everyone has the luxury of choice i guess. I have travelled in those trains in Mumbai many years ago when my cousins there took me. It was horrendous and I'm a very seasoned public transport traveller. I thought i was going to be crushed to death! Even here especially peak hours in the London underground, its like a battle! I like public transport if i travel alone because i'd hate to drive alone.

This is how the 'less-fortunate's travel!
This seems like ladies compartment, which is still better than general compartment. I have been there and done that. We all dis not have the luxury of private transport at some time. This was true before reserved compartments.

Dear friends,
In 70s, the train ticket used to be a tiny and thick and the train number would be written at the back side of the ticket. Once,
my uncle reserved berths for me and my appa by Quilon express, which leaves Coimbatore at 7.45 p.m and for his son by
Nilagiri express which leaves around 8.30 p.m. the same night. By mistake he told that we are all travelling by the same train
and brought us to the station at 8.15 p.m. The names of my appa and me were missing in the chart! The T T E told us that our
berths were already on the way to Madras and we have to travel in the unreserved coach only, with the same ticket! The guys
inside the coach were very kind and gave the luggage rack to me and appa! We managed to travel up to Madras, curling on the
rack for nearly eight hours!
P.S: I was weighing only 45 kgs then!!

in india train travel is a thrilling experiences....when i was serving in ARMY....i was posted north east...Assam/arunachal pradesh....
im entitled to travel in first class/AC 2 tier with railway warrant..but due to emergency/sometimes can not plan properly....
even though im having first class/ AC warrant...im not suppose enter in the compartments without reservation...i used to
travel in second class bathroom side seat/sometime close to bath room place with first class/AC warrant...but kind od nice
experiences from Gawhati to chennai.....3 days journey in olden days.....

The compartments in the picture seems not crowded... seems almost comfortable!
I had the pleasure of travelling in crowded public transport with all the BO and everything! There was a period I used to travel between Chennai and Vellore... quite a busy route.. most often would travel standing in a crowded bus/train compartment. ( when push coes to shove, I use to take lorry transport. Usually travel to poonamalli and hail a lorry from there!).
Of all the travels, two instances are unforgettable. first one was before I got married.. I was travelling to Vellore with John. He said 'let's go by bus'.. I said 'train'... dragged him to central station in time ( it was 5.45 PM those days).for Trivandram Mail (#19 mail as we called it!)... successfully took over the footboard in the general compartment.. It was first time for John to travel footboard.. compartment was full... But we sat sungly at the footboard... non-stop for two hours to Katpadi..... That was really cool.
Second instance.. from Poonamalli... buses were crowded... one tirupathur bus came along.. full... but knew the conductor.. asked him for the footboard.. he was initially reluctant.. ( he even gave away his seat)... then agreed.. I and my wife travelled sitting on the footboard... she was thrilled!... more than 25 years.. she still remembers that journey...
