Gayathri Jabam and Punnyajanam

Hello
My husband;s eldest sister passed away in India and we live in Australia. We were told that he has 3 days of theetu and should avoid praying to God and keep the pooja room closed. After three days he should perform Punnyajanam and Gayathri Jabam at home.
Is there any procedure available that we can follow to fulfil the rituals please. Your help is much appreciated.
