Indian society and Hinduism are indeed known for Ahimsa.

While serious differences and conflicts existed in the philosophy of religions, discussion in a Vidwat Sadas was the method largely used for conflict resolution.

When we compare this with the burnings at stake, the ghettoisation in Europe, the declaring of large sections as kafirs, pagans etc., which were adopted as methods for conflict resolution elsewhere in the world, Indians indeed were practising ahimsa.

There were indeed some laterday exceptions to this general predominence of ahimsa in conflict resolution.
