The word Lingam derived from Sanscrit

Liirgin, i, ini, i, having a mark or sign, wearing a distinguishing mark ; having the character of,characterized by (at the end of a comp.) ; wearing or bearing the insignia (of any office or character),

லிங்கம் என்பது சிவசக்தி சேர்ந்த அடையாளம் என்று ஆகமங்கள் விளக்கம் தருகின்றன. இத்தகைய குறி வழிபாடு மிகப் பழைய காலத்தில், உலகின் எல்லா நாடுகளிலும் இருந்து வந்துள்ளது. குறிப்பாக மெக்சிகோ, கிரீஸ், ரோம் ஆகிய நாடுகளில் லிங்கங்கள் புதைபொருள்களாக மிகுதியாகக் கிடைத்துள்ளன. இவற்றைச் சைவ சமயத்தைச் சேர்ந்ததாகக் கருதக் கூடாது. இது பற்றி ஆராய்ச்சி செய்த இங்கிலாந்து நாட்டு அறிஞர் ஹாட்டர் எம் வெஸ்ட்ராப் கூறுவதாவது, “விதையுள் அடங்கியுள்ள சக்தியும் மண்ணின் சக்தியும் உற்பத்தியின் இரு காரணிகளாக மனித மனத்தை முற்காலத்தில் கவர்ந்திருக்க வேண்டும். பிராணிகளின் உற்பத்தியிலும் இதே போல ஒன்று ஆணும், மற்றது பெண்ணுமாக இரட்டைக் காரணி அமைப்பு இருப்பதை அவர்கள் ஒப்பிட்டிருக்க வேண்டும். இந்த அறிவு பல நாட்டு மக்களுக்கும் பிறரிடமிருந்து கற்க வேண்டிய அவசியம் இல்லாமல் தானே தோன்றியது என்பதில் ஐயம் இல்லை. ஏனெனில் இயற்கையின் ஒரு பொருளோ செயல்பாடோ எல்லா இன மக்களுக்கும் அவர்கள் எவ்வளவு தொலைவில் பிரிந்திருந்தாலும் ஒரே மாதிரியான எண்ணத்தைத் தோற்றுவிக்குமாறு மனித மனம் அமைந்துள்ளது. குறிகள் இயற்கையின் உற்பத்திச் சக்தியின் அடையாளமாகக் கருதப்பட்டதால் அவை எல்லா நாடுகளிலும் மிக மரியாதையாக வணங்கப்பட்டன.” [PHALLIC WORSHIP BY HODDER M. மற்ற நாடுகளில் குறி வழிபாடு அநாகரிகமாகக் கருதப்பட்டுக் கைவிடப்பட்டது. தமிழ்நாட்டிலோ அல்லது இந்தியாவின் வேறு எப்பகுதியிலோ இத்தகைய குறி வழிபாடு தோன்றவில்லை. “இந்தியாவில் நாகரிகமற்ற மக்களிடையே கூடக் குறி வழிபாடு இருந்ததற்கான நிச்சயமான சான்று எதுவும் இல்லை” என்று சி.வி. நாராயண ஐயர் கூறுகிறார்.[The origin and early history of Saivism – C.V.Narayana Iyer p 48]

வேதமும் லிங்கமும்

வேதத்தில் வரும் சிசினதேவர்கள் [ரிக் 7.21.5, 10.99.3]என்ற சொல்லுக்குக் குறி வழிபாடு செய்வோர் எனப் பொருள் கொண்டு, சில ஆங்கிலேயர்கள், இது சிவலிங்க வழிபாடு செய்யும் தென்னாட்டவரைக் குறிக்கிறது என்றும் இவர்களை வேதம் இகழ்வதால் இது ஆரிய திராவிடப் பூசல் என்றும் கூறினர். ஏழு நூற்றாண்டுகளுக்கு முன், ஆரிய திராவிடப் பிரச்னைகள் தோன்றாத காலத்தில் எழுதப்பட்ட ஸாயணர் உரையில் சிசின தேவர் என்பதற்குப் பால் நுகர்ச்சியில் வரம்பு கடந்த நாட்டம் உடையவர் என்று தான் பொருள் கூறப் பட்டுள்ளது. எனவே சிசின தேவர் என்னும் சொல்லுக்கு சிவ வழிபாடு செய்வோர் எனப் பொருள் கூறியது ஆங்கில அரசாங்கத்தின் பிரித்தாளும் கொள்கையைக் காட்டுகிறது.

லிங்கம் என்ற வடசொல்லுக்கு அடையாளம் என்பதே முதற்பொருள். சிவன் என்ற பெயரை இறைவன் என்ற பொருளில் முதன் முதலாகப் பயன் படுத்தும் வேதப் பகுதியான ஸ்வேதாஸ்வதார உபநிடதம், சிவனுக்கு உருவமில்லை, ஆனால் பாமர மக்கள் வழிபட ஏதேனும் அடையாளம் வேண்டி இருக்கிறது என்று கூறுமிடத்தில், அடையாளம் என்ற பொருளில் லிங்கம் என்ற சொல்லைப் பயன்படுத்துகிறது. அது இன்றைய லிங்க வடிவைக் குறிப்பிடவில்லை.
