Dear Friends,
Mainly in brahmin community I have seen that while giving away daughters on marriage a set of vessels bed etc required for a family are given. These are in addition to cash and jewels. May be these practice are in some other communities also.When has this practice started? Was it with the intention that their daughter alongwith the groom should live separately. ie not in a joint family? Have our forefathers foreseen (forefathers hence they have to forsee) the consequences of joint family and inspired children to live separately? Kindly torch your thoughts.

this is a very unique observation sir.

i was of a different opinion. no matter while joint family was the norm, the hindu girls prior to 1951 or so, did not have property rights within their own family.

they got their inheritance early. at the time of marriage. known as seedhanam. it can be assumed that the groom did not have a double bed, and so fresh new beds came in handy and help them make babies.

ofcourse there were lots of paathrams in the household. the newly arrived ones immediately went to the paran, after careful examination re authenticity (so much silver what not) and recycled in times of want or when the generation changed, when these were brought out from the paran.

the seedhanam also was a instrument of bargain, between the bride and groom family. the latter ofcourse being the greedy one, usually, but there were exceptions. have you not heard that with 5 daughters even a king would turn into a pauper?

when it came to children moving away since 1900s to distant lands in search of jobs, it is a no brainer as to the need of all the furnishings for a new household set up. the ersthwile bachelor usually shared an apartment with friends, ate in a mess, and loafed around at night at the nair shop with cigarette, vethlai and hot milk to keep him company.

Greetings. In my opinion, in the olden days, the young couple were expected to start to live on their own, That was the reason for providing the required things to start a household to a bramachari bound for 'kaasi'. "paaligai' is the seedlings to start new crop after wedding.

Not mainly in brahmin commnity, we are may be last in the table.now a days not many brahmin boys or his parents ask these things.

If you have seen in other communities in hindus in kerala , Nair, Ezhavas, theeyas,(ezhavas) same people called in kannur side. there it is reverse man has to give all these things to girl, and more over if you see in others like muslims also has to give every thing with money called mehar and "ara orukkal" arranging the room as a permanant set up, it will comprises of all modern facilities/amenitiesetc.

now boy or girl all are having equal right on the property so no body minds these, still parents are doing these things to there own satifaction.

some time in olden times the boys may be fewer than the girls in the society. so he will move to the side where he gets more.
