New Delhi, April 1 (IANS) An FIR has been registered on Wednesday against the Editor of digital media outlet, The Wire, for a blog about Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath which allegedly made derogatory remarks against the CM which spread hatred in the society.

The media adviser to UP Chief Minister, Mrityunjay Kumar, had earlier tweeted about the Wire blog responding to a tweet by the Editor of the Wire, Sidharth Vardarajan.

"Don''t try to spread lies. CM Yogi Adityanath has never said such a thing. Delete this immediately otherwise action will be taken on this and a defamation case will also be registered. Apart from running the website, you will have to seek donations for fighting the case also," Kumar said.

The FIR referred to a tweet by Varadarajan which said, "On the day the Tablighi Jamaat event was held, Adityanath insisted a large Ram Navami fair planned for Ayodhya from March 25 to April 2 would proceed as usual and that 'Lord Ram would protect devotees from the coronavirus".

Later reacting to the FIR, a statement by the Founding Editors of The Wire said, "A bare perusal of the FIR shows that it is politically motivated and the offences invoked are not even remotely made out. The registration of an FIR is a blatant attack on the freedom of the press." "The government of Yogi Adityanath in Uttar Pradesh does not seem to have learnt anything despite the strictures passed against it by the Supreme Court in June 2019 when the court ordered the release of the journalist Prashant Kanojia whom the state had illegally arrested. The right to liberty is a fundamental right and non-negotiable, the court had said."

Uttar Pradesh Police resgistered an FIR against The Wire Founder-Editor Siddharth Varadarajan for spreading fake news against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

The FIR says that the Editor of the Wire wrote a blog in which he spread rumours and enmity in society. The FIR has been registered in the name of the Editor of The Wire.

"On the day the Tablighi Jamaat event was held, Yogi Adityanath insisted that a large fair planned for Ayodhya on the occasion of Ram Navami from March 25 to April 2 would proceed as usual while Acharya Paramhans said that Lord Ram would protect devotees from the coronavirus. One day after Modi announced the curfew like lockdown on March 24, Adityanath violated the official guidelines to take part in a religious ceremony in Ayodhya along with dozens of people," he wrote in the blog.

The FIR said that at the time of the coronavirus pandemic when the entire country is under lockdown and Section 144 is imposed in the district, the Editor of The Wire was making derogatory remarks against the UP Chief Minister, which has led to great anger among the people.

This act is punishable under Section 188/505 (2) of the Indian Penal Code. It is directed that a FIR be registered on the directions of Nitish Kumar Shrivastav, SHO, Kotwali Nagar, Ayodhya, it stated.

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, Varadarajan said that the FIR was politically motivated.

"I have come to know through social media that an FIR has been registered under Section 188 and 505(2) of the IPC against The Wire. A bare perusal of the FIR shows that it is politically motivated and the offences invoked are not even remotely made out. The registration of an FIR is a blatant attack on the freedom of the press," he added.

He said the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh does not seem to have learnt anything despite the strictures passed against it by the Supreme Court in June 2019 when the court ordered the release of journalist Prashant Kanojia whom the state had illegally arrested. The right to liberty is a fundamental right and non-negotiable, the court had said.

"What the FIR says I have stated -- that Chief Minister Adityanath attended a public religious event in Ayodhya on March 25 after the Prime Minister had announced a national lockdown -- is a matter of record," Varadarajan added.

The old school method of spreading lies amongst public is to write articles. But there is a drawback: since text can be searched via search engines, it’s easier to bust such fake news. As a result, over the past few months, we have seen how lies after lies are published in the leftist propaganda website The Wire has been exposed. So how does one avoid this? Publish videos instead.

Publishing videos is much better since the content in it can never be referenced or searched. Further, owing to wide penetration of 3G and 4G services, videos become viral much faster. Now all you need is a sobre-looking, reliable face to rattle out half-truths and whole lies. And Vinod Dua fits this role perfectly. Through his video series titled “Jan Gan Man ki Baat“, Dua, peddles some of the finest unadulterated propaganda, which will be dissected one by one.

A disclaimer though: This is not an exhaustive list of lies. There may well be many factual inaccuracies which have been missed. This article only tackles the glaringly obvious and catastrophically major factual inaccuracies in his videos. Some of the lies have been repeated by Mr Dua in subsequent videos, and they are not counted separately.

One has to take a pause and awe at the dichotomy of a situation when one encounters a video produced by the leftist propaganda website ‘The Wire’ where Dua talks about, wait for it, ‘fake news’. ‘The Wire’ itself been caught several times peddling the most outlandish lies with impunity. They have never retracted or apologised when called out. It would be fitting to look back at some of the lies that have been peddled by ‘The Wire’. This list is not comprehensive but only indicative of the editorial standards and ethics that the platform has regularly displayed.

The Wire is known for peddling anecdotes, which most of the times spawn from fairy dust and disgruntlement towards a certain group of people, as opinion pieces. They thought they would get away with it when they published an article laced with presumptions. In this particular article, a writer named Atul Dev currently associated with ‘The Caravan’, who previously worked for the English daily Sunday Guardian accused his former employers of ‘killing stories’ which are ‘even slightly critical of the Modi government’.

‘The Wire’ makes a #MeToo list, leaves out their own founding editor and National Herald editor

The #MeToo movement has gathered steam in India and several powerful people have been outed. Women have come out in scores to narrative their ordeal of sexual harassment and workplace harassment suffered at the hands of men in power. Among those accused, were several members of the All India Bakchod (AIB) comedy team, media persons, actor Alok Nath and even politicians like MJ Akbar.

Several media houses, including Opindia.com, have doggedly reported many of the stories. The leftist propaganda website The Wire, in fact, tweeted an entire thread of their articles covering the #MeToo movement.

The Wire earns Supreme Court ire for yellow journalism

The strong remarks came after The Wire journalists chose to withdraw their petition, which had sought quashing of a defamation case filed against them by Jay Shah.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday slammed news portal The Wire and its journalists for being in a hurry to publish a story on Jay Shah, son of Union home minister Amit Shah, saying it was "nothing short of yellow journalism".

The strong remarks came after The Wire journalists chose to withdraw their petition, which had sought quashing of a defamation case filed against them by Jay Shah. The proceedings in the defamation case are going on in a Gujarat court.

A bench of Justices Arun Mishra, MR Shah and BR Gavai was particularly upset that the news portal had given only a seven hour-window to Jay Shah to rebut allegations – over financial matters – against him before going public.

Senior advocate Kapil Sibal who appeared for the portal had to face the heat as the bench shared a similar instance where the judiciary "suffered" on account of such reporting. Reacting to Sibal's request to withdraw, the bench felt that the "truth" is never told to the country in important cases as they get withdrawn.

The bench told Sibal, "This institution has suffered a lot for this. We are worried as judges of this court as we have suffered. What is this kind of journalism that has developed in our country? After all, we are a civilised country. Do you give notice to anybody and ask him to respond within 10 hours and before a response can come, the allegation is made public."

The court was possibly referring to a recent allegation of sexual harassment against the Chief Justice of India that was published with less than seven hours given for the Supreme Court Registry to rebut.

"It is easy to make allegations and malign anyone as the damage is already done," the bench said, adding, "This is nothing short of yellow journalism...Freedom of press is supreme but it cannot be one-way traffic."

We have kept the question open to be considered in a later case."

Sibal realised that this order could pose difficulty as his clients have to face trial. He said, "With these observations, I will surely be convicted." The bench added a line that the observations won't affect the case on merits.
