Fast spreading Addiction.

Today's edition of "The New Indian Express" carrys an editorial under the caption "Deal with addiction before it blows up", which cautions the dangers of fast spreading internet games among the people who are susceptible to addiction.

I have also observed many school going children and ladies among our families spending time in playing these games without understanding that they will be soon caught up in the addiction without their knowledge eventually fall into mental disorders.

Addiction to a particular action starts as an innocent spark and spreads fast into a while fire and destroy the peace of the person and family.

Gita gives a beautiful description of cause for mental disorders.

ध्यायतो विषयान्पुंस: सङ्गस्तेषूपजायते |
सङ्गात्सञ्जायते काम: कामात्क्रोधोऽभिजायते || 62||
BG 2.62: While contemplating on the objects of the senses, one develops attachment to them. Attachment leads to desire, and from desire arises anger.

क्रोधाद्भवति सम्मोह: सम्मोहात्स्मृतिविभ्रम: |
स्मृतिभ्रंशाद् बुद्धिनाशो बुद्धिनाशात्प्रणश्यति || 63||

BG 2.63: Anger leads to clouding of judgment, which results in bewilderment of the memory. When the memory is bewildered, the intellect gets destroyed; and when the intellect is destroyed, one is ruined.

What's up? Elderly as addicted to social media as teens.

He was angry, abusive and addicted to WhatsApp. The behavioural disorders soon became a concern for the family, as he began spending five hours every day on the messaging platform. This wasn’t a teen issue. The patient was, after all, a 70-year-old media addict who turned up at Narayana Health.

Doctors warn that senior citizens are as vulnerable as today’s youth. What starts as a slow exploration of new technologies may graduate into addiction, they say.

Doctors here have begun including digital addiction as part of comprehensive psychiatric assessment. In contrast to adolescents, it is mostly a need to explore that drives senior citizens.
