Over Rs 10.93 crore penalty has been imposed in 2,795 cases, while culprits have been convicted in 1,402 cases so far this year, according to the testing report of public laboratories released by the Food Safety Standards Authority of India (FSSAI).
As per the report compiled by the state governments, food safety labs received 83,265 samples, of which 74,010 were tested till November 24 of 2015. Out of the tested samples, the labs found 14,599 samples were "adulterated and misbranded", the data showed.
A maximum 4,119 samples were found adulterated and misbranded in Uttar Pradesh, followed by Punjab (1,458), Madhya Pradesh (1,412), Gujarat (1,243), Maharashtra (1,162) and Tamil Nadu (1,047).
The penalty of Rs 10.93 crore has been imposed in 2,795 cases, and maximum fine of Rs 5.98 crore was imposed for cases reported in Uttar Pradesh.
As many as 2,676 criminal cases and 7,860 civil suits were registered, of which convictions were reported in 1,402 cases, the report added. Issues related to quality of food and FSSAI came into the limelight after it imposed the ban on Maggi in June this year, which was later lifted by the Bombay High Court.
In August this year, the Supreme Court junked the FSSAI's advisory that asked manufacturers to get clearance for products even if the ingredients were already approved or deemed safe.
The government is also mulling Rs 1,750-crore proposal to strengthen central food regulator FSSAI as well as state bodies.

In the past, Cadbury,Coke,Pepsi, mustard oil, Magi ….. all failed in quality standard tests.

Subsequently they all entered the market either by raising the quality standards of products or lowering the yardstick of quality control.

If every fifth sample submitted failed, you should be worried about how many other "samples" submitted were "selected" for submitting?

How were the sample tested? and by who?

The anti-corruption bureau (ACB) on Saturday busted an inter-state gang involved in selling adulterated and chemically processed ghee and food oil. The bureau booked several food inspectors and police officers along with some adulterators in connection with the matter.

In a shocking revelation, ACB said the adulterators had nexus with some lower-level employees in the bureau also. A total of 102 people including a dozen food inspectors and half-a-dozen policemen have been booked in 12 FIRs lodged in this connection after over 50 raids in Jaipur and several other districts. Officials said the adulterated oil and butter was sold not only in Rajasthan, but also in Punjab, Delhi, Gujarat, Bhopal and Jammu & Kashmir. The gang has been running rackets in these states too.

The kingpin, Dinesh Kumar Singhal, a resident of Barkat Nagar, has been involved in selling adulterated ghee and oil for years.

Already, we are habituated to eating, drinking and inhaling adulterated food, water and air. If all of a sudden the Govt. wakes up and seriously starts implementing health standards, many of us will fall ill, eating, drinking and inhaling quality stuff. So, in our own benefit and care, these brands are giving the adulterated, substandard quality products so that we survive and stay healthy now, and also in future, be prepared to go further with deteriorating quality.

Who said the Govt. officials are suddenly wake up ?

They are not sleeping; They are ever vigilant.

The higher ups in Govt are ever vigilant and ever ready in taking action, no sooner than their due share of the collection at lower level, do not reach them.

We need a lot of "Inthian"s at all places to tackle these corruptive people.
