Enquiry on "why need of Obsequies?

I would be greatly obliged, if our members could enlighten me on the need for doing the rituals, partitularly, the one regarding the 'obsequies' ( immediately after the death and also the monthly, yearly rituals one has to perform);

But there are variations from region to region and the sampradhayas (tradition/school) which the Purohit belongs to.

When my father died I bought a book on Dharmasasthras. It is in Tamil printed by Sanskrit College, Madras. But not for general circulation. But when I took the book to my Vadhyar ( he had suggested it when I asked him about the basis of the procedure) he went back saying that the practice is different from what is given in the book.

Get a good Sasthirigal and he will do the needful.
