Thanks Mr. Balasubramanian for inviting me to your troup. I paste Madurai Mani Iyer's English Note.

Lets start this one by asking some seniour carnatic music specialist here, which raga it resembles most closely. Unlike a rock or jazz, there seems to be a specific pattern in the entire song. If so what is the aroganam and avaroganam.

I apologize i have noted down only the lyrics and not focussed on the TAL.

well that took about a month my schedule to jot down !
 
More online search revealed that the ragam of this song is our own common SANKARABARANAM. Just to revise this ragam is one of the MELAKARTHA. i.e.: all the swaras are present in arog and avarog. the r, g, d, n -- being strong both on ups and downs.

Now the interesting bit has shifted to the fact as to how a ragam like that can be mixed to such a Kathanakuthukalam type, jumping song! ( This doubt arose after watching some of carnatic super singer on TV, where they said YOU not only need to stick to the swara patterns :boom:of a/ava/rog, but also need to stick to CLASSICAL laya/Pattern of the the ragam ).

Most probably MMI's dominance during early 1940-50 got him a new Laya to Snkarabaranam!!

very nice to listen . it reminds a scene in thillana mohanambal where vaithi (nagesh )ask sikkil shanmugasundaram (sivaji ganesan )to play english note with nadhaswaram and davil.

same song .but the voice make it more melody . sri uni krishnan voice is very sweet compared to Vani jayaram and nitya sharee.

Unni's Vara Leela gana Lola - is excellent (Merci Beacoup Raji Madame). smooth and light.
Mr. Ravi varma is too slow, MMI is rocking as usual.


I apologize to dwell upon the theoretical aspects of Notes again.

Compositions can be classified as follows:

1. Varnam - e-tude like.

2. Kriti - art songs, rondo form, very common.

3. Svarajati - poetic text and swara sung alternatively.

4. Padam - full of emotion; love themes.

5. Javali - sentiments of love.

6. Tillana - short, interesting rhythms.

So English Note is a Tillana? or is it just a Kriti?

Notes or Swara

Many ragas share the same underlying scale made up of five, six or seven swaras (notes). A raga with five is called audava ragas, with six - shaadava ragas and seven - sampoorna ragas.

Ragas that don’t follow ascending/ descending rules of swaras are called vakra (crooked) ragas.

That last line is revealing for myself.
Any examples of VAKRA ( crooked ) ragas?

Dear Sandhya,

English note is neither a krithi nor a thillAnA. Krithis should have lyrics and thillAnAs should have jathis along with

swarams and lyrics. It is just a form of music resembling English music. Hence called 'English note'.

Any rAgam which has twisted ArOhaNam and / or avarOhaNam is a vakra rAgam. There are many such rAgams.
