Doubts regarding ritual.

One of my relative's husband has passed away recently. Now, his wife will be visiting our house within 10 days. We, in our Brahmin community have such practice followed by our ancestors.
There are certain procedures to be followed when a woman visits our house within 10 days of demise of her husband.
Kindly share the same ( dos & don'ts) so that it will be useful to everyone in the forum.
Rituals had meaning in past. With the changing times such meaning may become unnecessary and so it should be modified or changed. Use a logic and science to analyze such rituals and remove a blind faith.

Only to her mother's house the woman will visit within ten days of her loss. No where else. Mostly her mother or an elderly woman will lead her into the house, who will sprinkle paddy seeds on the way from entrance. After some cries, the woman will depart back to her home where he rituals are carried out. The sprinkled paddy will have to be gathered and thrown away for birds.

Dear Kalyanaraman: The above procedural explanation is well and good. However, can you please explain why all these VIDHIS are done?

Yes, visit to only a mother side relative within 10 days and she is offered a glass butter milk before leaving the parents / relative's house.
