Did Britain civilize India?

Dear Friends,

Even today in 21st century India, we see the following:

1) Dowry deaths, sati etc.

2) Corruption at all levels

3) Inefficiency: Even 50 years after independence, India is third-world, whereas a country like Japan could recover quickly after a nuclear holocaust.

4) Dirty roads, bridges that regularly collapse, trains that collide all too often, tired old buses and so on.

5) People too loud and uncivil, even in public places.

6) People dirtying public places in different ways.

7) Poverty, lack of education or awareness.

8) Cowardice: this needs no explanation. Indians are the most spineless people in the world.

9) Abnormal behavior: This may sound strange. Indians complain of discrimination in western countries, but keep harping on skin color even with respect to men. Which is surprising, to say the least. Look at the matrimonial ads, "wanted fair, good-lookin' somethin'. " This is quite abnormal, because when the world is surging ahead, here are Indians worrying about the least important matter.

10) Masochism/Sadism:
This also may sound strange, but it's true just the same. Times without number, we've come across cops, govt. officials, airport authorities harassing people, just for the heck of it. It may not even involve money in most cases, but they love to hurt people, and that too in front of other people. I've seen this happen to many Indians at the airport where some idiot with a dirty smile picks on an Indian passenger and humiliates him in front of a westerner.

Aside from this kind of sadism, Indians are also masochistic, because where else would you find a country that willingly and voluntarily praises foreign rulers? or elects foreigners? attacks fellow hindus?

There are many more, but suffice it to say that Indians are hardly civilized, considering these factors. Doesn't this prove the British contention that Indians are an uncivilized race, and that Britain had to civilize it?:thumb:

each culture and each civilization has it own way of being "civilized".

to an extent, the british did a good job but there is always a limit to what one can do.

some would say, they tried to force their way of lives into us - which holds true to some extent as well.

if india ever did occupy britain and if we tried to change them to out ways of walking barefoot, eating with hands and other "indian" tasks it wouldnt work.

then from the indian point of view, they would be uncivilized and we had to go there and change them

its all in the way one looks at it

they did occupy Mexico and other South American Countries, but nothing has changed. they still live in their own ancient ways .

Did Britain Civilize India?

Pardon me for not able to understand the question of the topic.But it gave me an opportunity to analyse and Compare the Governments run by them with the present day Governing.

Well, I never believed Britishers came here to civilize Indians. Englishmen came here under the East India Company to do business as merchants. The Native Rulers gave them into Governance on a platter. If you open the History of this nation, never we had a single Unit what we call today as India. Even at the time of quitting India the British rule was confined to units called Provinces covering little over 30 per cent land space that we see today. Rest of the Country was split into 625 native states small and big spread all over the sub-continent. Britishers never interfered into the Religious affairs and personal behaviour of individuals. In fact the Country ruled by them enjoyed better administrative, Judicial and safety cover than ever. They codified legal and adminitrative procedures. You will find many of the health schemes like District Hospitals started by them still continue. They established Educational and research facilities.But for their conservation of ancient monuments under the Archeological Department, we would have lost many of our treasures forever.The living example of their efficiency is the Indian Railways. At the time when they left India they also left 20,000 Iron Miles of Railways. Their administration was much more secular than now. They retained or improved the previous administrative set up of Muslim rulers. They retained many of the persian words like Zilla, Taluq, Thahsil, Srisdedar, Vakil, Vakalath , Zamindar, Mittadar etc. so long it was understood by the common man. Comparing to many of the so called "advanced and civilized" Nations we have better law and order for a big democracy.

Ofcourse like any other Colonial power, Britishers were also interested in taking the wealth of this Country to their home land. Which they did well.

Britishers valued Indian Labour,and they took Indians to other colonies like Burma, Strait settlements (Malaysia), Singapore, Hongkong, British Guyana, other colonies in Africa or where ever they went.

For me Culture and Civilization are results of evolution. Nobody can claim that they are Civilized or Cultured than another. Personal behaviour of individuals differ according to the circumstances and social levels. It will be the same all over the world. Please Don't tell me advanced Countries like UK, USA, Japan, Russia etc do not have Corruption and other maladies enumerated by Sri Maruti. Human behaviour is all the same every where, through out generations.

Few more points to add:

1. Indians are suckers for easy money. Give them money, they will do anything. They will want money without working, and they will want money even unlawfully. Just take the case of software piracy, music piracy, traffic policeman asking 5 rupees in signals ( they can rather beg), corporation officials taking money, sales tax taking money, telephone guy, cable guy, government baboos...its all for money.
Infact we even allowed invaders after taking money. We betray for money.

2. Indians are neither good leaders nor good followers. We never produced a great leader..who can lead people, who can govern, who can rule the land lawfully. Indians are not good followers, so even if someone makes a law, they either are ignorant of it, or deliberately not follow the law. Just as an experiment, put a garbage box, and there will be garbage all around it, exept on the box. Also only in India one can see males standing in females que in rail stations as there are no females ( they dont even have the basic sense of shame).

3. Indians are shameless. Because of this, they will be suckers for money, or opt an easy way out. Even this reservation concept is because of shamelessness.

It is also this shamelessness, that leads them to sh** in public places, and consider it normal.

4. Blame brahmins for everything. This is a standard tool coming in handy for any occasion. For example...why is India backward? Because of paarpaan.
Why did not sivaji ganesan get Dadasaheb Phalke award ( it happened in college..and he has not got the award yet)...Because he is not a Paarpaan.
Why did CV Raman get nobel prize? Because he is a paarpaan.
