Delineation of Synonyms

Would appreciate an explanation of the literal meaning and distinction between:

• durabhyasam
• durcharitam
• ketta sahavasahanam

Though the meanings are similar I'm looking to understand the finer distinctions between these three adjectives.

Abhaysa...literally means repetition,repeated practice or repeated exercises,constant study.

Something that is done repeatedly becomes a habit ..therefore Durabhyasam can be taken to mean a Bad Habit.



Caritra means character,behavior,conduct,disposition and also habit.

Mostly the meaning is thought to be character/behavior.


Therefore Duracharitam would mean Bad Character.

Coming to the fine difference....A habit is subject to change cos a habit is something that came about due to repeated external exposure of a stimulus.

In cases of bad habits..the stimulus brings about negative results but if the stimulus is stopped and replaced by a positive effect stimulus the bad habit might ceases to exist though its not all that easy to do so..but there is at least some hope.

Coming to bad character...this is a bit more complex cos character to some extent does have genetic and environmental influence too and not to mention past birth imprints and its effect on the phases of our lives.

So Bad Character is harder to treat but not impossible.

Anyway Good and Bad too is kind of subjective these days.

I guess the third one is 'ketta sahavAsam'.

It means bad association (being friendly with bad people).

"durabhyaasam" means 'bad practice' or 'erroneous practice'. "durcharitam" is wrong as per sanskrit; the correct word is "duscharitram" which means 'bad history', 'bad past' or 'bad reputation'. "ketta sahavaasam" means 'bad company'. "sahavaasahanam" in sanskrit will mean "one which kills the company of" and thus produce the exact opposite meaning.

Essentially the three words do not form synonyms and have shades of difference in their meaning.
