Delhi Elections

Electioneering has reached delhi at last with voting on 12th may on sixth phase.

Congress is going it alone after failing to tie up with AAP.

Attempts at seat sharing between the two failed as AAP wanted alliance with congress in Haryana also in addition which

was not acceptable to congress.

There are seven lok sabha seats.

BJP is banking on film star Manoj Tewari , cricketer Gautam Gambhir among others. Congress not to be left behind is

fielding boxer Vijendar singh.

Some interesting names in election arena-Smt Shiela Dikshit - 80 yr old ex CM of delhi, Ajay Makan, Dr Harsh vardhan of

BJP, Atishi Marlena of AAP.All have contributed to betterment of citizens of delhi.I do not know if any of them will win

Bjp is first off the block with flags in roads , outside temples . AAP is banking on Mohalla clinics, betterment of govt

schools, regularisation of slums , subsidised power for slum dwellers and free water to get the votes of the poor.

BJP is talking of swach bharat and hnidutva to get the hindu votes.Muslim voters are likely to be divided between congress

and AAP.

Heart of the poor is with AAP.

We living in Multi storeyed flats do not matter much and are likely to be left alone.

Campaigning is yet to pick up. AAP is just beginning with Kejriwal beginning his road shows .He is the only vote catcher

for AAP. Others from BJP and congress I suppose will follow and get their act together.

Most political national leaders are tired after four phases of elections which has been acrimonious with name calling and

abuse getting freely traded.Heat of 42 degrees celsius is not going to make it easy for political workers.

So we might have a peaceful election with less noise and bad incidents.

Candidates declaring assets make interesting reading.

A national level cricketer fighting election declared 257 crores of moveable and immoveable assets.

All are in crores league.

I start wondering what are we with excellent academics and good career in public sector worth at the fag end

of life

We talk of lakhs and at best couple of crores.

Economy has changed into a high cost one.

Where did we miss out?

The mixed economy we were in made some obscenely rich and condemning others to life in slums or at best in

pokey little flats in middle class colonies

!991 was a water shed year.We opened out our economy and continued that way very fast to make our savings

worthless over time.

Our children are in crores league and many senior citizens have to live on handouts from them

The depreciation of money, inflation have broken the backs of the middle class.

Upper middle class have become lower middle class and lower are closer to poverty .

National parties have nothing to offer and their economic policies are almost the same.

Will a new messiah emerge offering a new path and policy minimising the rich and the poor divide?

Today most private sector top executives earn as much as 200 times of median employee. Public sector are

better with 7 to 8 times the median salaries. This was much less in nehru vian socialist days when it was 4 to 1.

Then it was concerned obscene to earn more and most maintained simple life styles.

Unless there is a radical change in political thinking ,people will lose faith in politicians and democratic

processes.

Many middle class stay away from elections as they have become apathetic .They see no future with any of the

ruling parties.

What interests me in delhi elections is there are two committed youngsters - Athishi Marlena and Raghav

Chadha Of AAP fighting the lok sabha elections. Both have contributed to the welfare of delhi citizen . Athishi

has worked to make delhi govt schools better. Raghav chaddha is a chartered accountant and treasurer of AAP.

He is spokesman for the party and is very articulate. These youngsters have hardly any assets to declare. and it

is in lakhs. They are working to make delhi citizens life better. It comes as a relief to see such youth in politics.

I do not know if they can get elected. They might get crushed by the money power of congress and BJP

candidates.I am curious to see how they fare.

In delhi it is not the national issues getting debated. It is the traffic woes, air quality, health care, women safety .

AAP govt has performed inspite of central govt hostility. Mohalla clinics are a hit. They enjoy support of

muslim minorities. They have done well to take electricity at subsidised rates and laying sewage lines in slums.

None is bothered about Rafale or air strikes on a neighbouring country. With all this BJP is likely to do well and

are favourites. Congress will only split secular votes.

Mlddle class is likely to stay away from voting.

Only slum dwellers will decide the winners.

Yesterday Prakashraj joined a roadshow in support of AAP.Politics makes strange bedfellows.

This morning AAP activists[ 5or 6] with white AAP caps with folded hands lined up at the entrance of park

to greet morning walkers frequenting the open gym.

BJP is happy putting up flags and dropping leaflets in homes.Gautam gambhir expects modi"s name to

see him through.

AAP has foolishly tried to over bargain with congress and not come to an electoral understanding with

congress and most

likely lose the election.

Most likely BJP might win here without much effort

With 5th phase voting in other northern states, focus is on these states.

Politicians of national parties are not fixed on delhi.

I see no signs of activity other than a few pamphlets being thrown into houses.

Only AAP is making some noise as they are confined to delhi mostly

Heat of 42 degrees plus is not making things easy.

Interest in elections is waning as only two phases are left [the last about 120 seats are yet to be decided]

Only BJP should worry if they want to form the govt again.

Only Satta bazaar and stock markets are maximum sensitive to elections.

Both had factored NDA to return though with reduced majority.

Phaloda [ They are rajasthan based] satta bazaar is giving best odds for 240 seats for BJP and 70 for congress.

Stock market have factored in NDA win and will give a knee jerk reaction [It is volatile already] if NDA does not

win. comfortably.

Big players are reducing their exposure to stock markets.Sensex has reached all time low today.

Trade issues between US and china also is hurting indian markets . Add to it higher fuel prices we have a

volatile mix.

Today is the last day for campaigning in delhi falling in 6th phase.

It has been made sore by casting aspersions on AAP candidate Aathishi Marlena thru leaflets.

She was moved to tears in course of a press conference organised by AAP.

It has been the ugliest of elections. Being a woman has made it worse for her.

Heat of 44 degree celsius is not making things easy for candidates in the fray.

Except a few street shows by candidates it has been low key.

I think apathy is likely to affect turn outs on polling day.

It is the month of Ramzan . Add to it the heat , I expect the polling not to cross 50%.

Only the new voters and women show some enthusiasm for voting.

Though AAP is popular with the poor, Modi"s name is likely to draw many youngsters

The election is fought only on TV channels with biased media coverage. Depending on media ownership ,

one or the other party gets promoted.

It is likely to be a split verdict.

My choice-Harsh Vardhan,Meenakshi Lekhi of BJP, Athishi Marlena,Ragav Chaddha of AAP, Sheela dikshit,

Ajay Makan of congress. They are performers and contributed to the good of delhi citizens

On 11th may ,With electioneering coming to an end, an eerie silence has descended on delhi.

I am happy that I will no more see saffron scarves or white AAP caps on the roads.

It was a bitterly fought election. leaving a bad taste in voters.

Let us see what happens on the voting day tomorrow.

Will voters apathy change the electoral verdict?

I would like to see committed political worker to win not film stars or sportsmen who are in it as proxies for the

national leaders.

Middle class senior citizen having to go to polling booth a kilometre away is a disadvantage.

They could have more booths for voting.

Let me see if I can make it tomorrow

Most vote on caste and religious lines specially in urban villages of delhi.

Being a jat or yadav , hindu or muslim decide the vote.

What affects their livelihood like food prices, cattle feed matter more than rafale or balakot

Urban voters think totally differently. They get moved by calls of nationalism ,desire for change.

What can happen is anyone"s guess.

No pollster can call it right.

So I suppose we need to wait until 23rd may for the result. It might throw up many surprises.

True . When the contest is between 2 parties we can predict the outcome but when multiple parties contest and some are friends in one place and rivals in another place ( eg. Communist and Congress ) then it becomes very difficult to predict the outcome . So only May 23 we will know what is the situation . Till then Media , Astrologers , Political Analysts can keep writing what they want .

Today 12th may is voting day.
Early morning dust storm [Aandhi] brought temperature down . A nice cool day for voting.

Atmosphere near polling booth was one of local mela.

AAP volunteers in full strength. BJP volunteers very few in number,INC could not locate any.

Inside the polling area , half a dozen election officials were present to direct voters to the right room for

voting.

Very smooth. Returned in less than 10 minutes after the vote.

Could cast vote ,verifying on VVPAT.

Overall pleasant experience

It seems well off middle class in self financing flats in our locality are staying away from voting. They think it is

not worth voting. Only the poor who have expectations from the govt in terms of welfare schemes and

protection from demolition and destruction of their houses are out to vote. Also sun has come out and it is hot

again.Perhaps it might pick up later.

If voting crosses 60% then it might be considered as good
