COVID-19 LIVE | India observes 'Janta curfew' as confirmed cases reach 324, five dead so far
People have been urged to voluntarily stay indoors to check the spread of coronavirus while public transport will be suspended or curtailed

An unprecedented shutdown commenced across the country on Sunday morning on Prime Minister Narendra Modi's appeal for a 'Janata curfew' to help check the spread of coronavirus.

As the 'Janata curfew' got underway at 7 am, people largely kept themselves indoor as part of the social distancing exercise to stop the spread of the virus and bare number of public transport vehicles plied on nearly empty roads.

All markets and establishments except those dealing in essential goods and services will be closed for the day.

The 'Janata Curfew' will end at 9 pm.

Ahead of the start of the curfew, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "In a few minutes from now, the #JantaCurfew commences. Let us all be a part of this curfew, which will add tremendous strength to the fight against COVID-19 menace".

He said the steps to be taken now will help in the times to come.

"Stay indoors and stay healthy," he said on Twitter.

Clap, whistle, ring: PM Modi's mantra on how you can thank those working 24 hours during Covind-19 outbreak

Now, you can thank the Corona Warriors - people who have been working tirelessly to help stop the spread of deadly novel coronavirus - here's how.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged the nation to come together to thank the emergency service workers for working through the novel coronavirus outbreak.

In his address to the nation, the prime minister suggested that every Indian must come out of their houses, stand in balcony or window at exactly 5 pm on Sunday, March 22 and express gratitude towards the people who are working tirelessly to keep them safe in midst of the crisis.

"On March 22, at 5 pm stand on your doors and windows for 5 minutes and clap, ring a bell to salute people who are serving the nation tirelessly," the prime minister said.

Apart from the people employed in essential services like government jobs and medical facilities, PM Modi urged every Indian to stay at home as much as possible. He assured that the supply of essential services will not be interrupted during this period.

PM Modi asked every Indian to observe junta curfew between 7 am and 9 pm on March 22.

Novel coronavirus has affected at least 180 people across India and killed four.
