Good information to shareIndia's Total Population 118 Crores.
Daily Death - 62389
Daily Birth - 86853
Total Blinds - 682497

If only 10% Daily Dead People Donate their Eyes, within 100Days all Blinds who require eye donation will be able to See.
The Central/State Governments and ngos/social workers shouldencourage donation and give incentives/subsidy for donors especially the poor

Is there a way of creating awareness of this fact among the general population?

At least the educated and informed persons can do this.

At least the 19,000+ members of this forum can do this and wake up the others from their deep sleep!

Any takers for this proposal???

As for me, I am ready :) :thumb:

Can praveen do anything to promote this through the forum???

Dear Mr. praveen! Are you listening???

Dear Sri.Kalyanaraman, Greetings.

With all due respect to your message, eye donation alone may not solve the problem. A large portion of the Indian blind would not even require an expensive eye-transplant surgery. Blindness can be avoided in uch cheaper actions before the blindness sets in!

As per that report, about 2/3rd of the blindness is caused due to cataract. Cataract do not require eye-transplant. Blindness due to diabetes, pathological reasons may not require eye-transplants either.

Cheers!

What is required to rectify this problem? What is being done? How can we help?

Dear Sri. Prasad, Greetings.

In the past, there was an effort by the Govt. of Tamil Nadu called கண்ணொளி வழங்கும் திட்டம் through which, thousants of poor and vulnerable population were tested and free glasses were provided. Such similar schemes could be adopted all over the country. The local and Panchayat governing bodies could collect the information about local eye health requirements and pool up the information country wide to rectify the problems. Such schemes should be undertaken by the governing persons.

By the way, such tasks are not wish lists of an utopian world either. Such schemes are basic requirements for the citizens of India. Govt. of India is obligated to perform such services for her citizens. The model explained by me is not my imagination either; it is already done in Australia. The local governing bodies do take the census, but the local doctors (GPs) make referrals for eye tests; all the optometrists make free eye tests once every two years for everyone (once every year for people suffer from diabetes and persons over 50 yrs old) which are in fact subsidised by the federal Government. While glasses are quite expensive in Australia, inexpensive glasses can be obtained by online shopping; persons who are covered by 'health care card' (unemployed or not well off as per 'means testing' can purchse these glasses at a subsidised price).

India is a rich enough country. Government should think about spreading the wealth towards all the people. ( I was told, in the recent Panchayat elections, in my village the contestants paid 200 to 300 rupees per vote! There were localities in which a bag of rice was given for the family vote, even a gas stove was given for the family vote! So, there is plenty money alright; only serving mentality lacks for the governing persons in India).

Cheers!

Well Said. Together with the eye test/exams and otherwise too, people should be educated on the importance of consuming healthy, nutritious foods.

Nutritional Therapy For Diabetic Retinopathy?
> Vision > Diabetic Complications > Everything Diabetes

So what should we eat to avoid vision loss from diabetes? My recommendation is to eat an anti-inflammatory diet that emphasizes low glycemic-index vegetables, nuts and whole grains, with a minimum of 25 grams of dietary fiber daily. Avoiding foods containing refined carbohydrate, high amounts of (especially animal) fat, and limiting total calories consumed will not only reduce the risk of severe retinopathy. Nutritional Therapy For Diabetic Retinopathy?
> Vision > Diabetic Complications > Everything Diabetes

Several research studies show that the antioxidant properties of vitamins C and E (Almonds), Lutein and XeoZanthin (Spinach) may protect against the development and progression of cataracts. .Nutrition and Cataracts | American Optometric Association

But, what surprises me, is that none of these are told or advised for, by the doctors except for giving drugs or unnecessary radiology scans and treatments.

Why aren't we working for the prevention, than the cure? Why is the information Hiding?? Leave the cases, where people don't listen or follow good advices! Even among friends, relatives, communities, people hide information or valuable facts. Is everyone being healthy or happy, a competitive factor?

Oops! Don't leave the cases, where people don't listen or follow good advices! Pester them, and warn them of the consequences and bring them to your fold!

Recently I read a news item that in the USA,one young boy lost his eyesight.
He was wearing plastic contact lens, went near fire where charcoal was used for cooking in an open area for a party.Suddenly he started crying and his friends initially thought that he was joking. When he was taken to a clinic, the Doctor declared that the young man has lost his sight.
Persons wearing contact lenses should be careful.
