Bhakteshwara Vratam is observed on Kartika Pournami. In 2009, Bhakteshwara Vratam date is November 2. This vow is dedicated to Lord Shiva and mainly observed in Andhra Pradesh and in some parts of Karnataka by married women for saubhagyam (longer life and good health of their husbands).
According to a local legend, on Kartika Pournami, a woman performed Shiva Puja in a very severe manner to protect her husband from ‘Akala Mruthyuvu’. Lord Shiva was pleased with her dedication and devotion and ordered Yama, God of death, to leave her husband alive. Since then, on Kartika Pournami day, Bhakteshwara vratham is observed by married women for wellbeing of their husbands.
Markandeya Puranam is recited during Bhakteshwara vratham on Kartika Purnima. Offering lotus flowers to Lord Shiva during the vratam is highly meritorious. On this vrata, Jwala Thoranotsavam is also observed.
