Ashtadasa Shakti -Kamarupa devi-Vulva-Guwahati (Assam)

Kamakhya Temple is one amongst the holiest shrines throughout India. Perched on Nilanchal Hill in Kamrup district of Assam, Kamakhya Mandir is easily accessible at a stretch of 8 kms from Guwahati. The temple commemorates Hindu Goddess Sati in her aspect of Kamakhya Devi. Goddess Kamakhya is also known as Sodashi in the local region.


In the shrine, Kamakhya Devi, in the form of genital organ (yoni), presides as a big crevice in the bedrock. The Goddess is covered naturally by a rivulet of water gushing upward from an underground spring. The crevice is usually covered with sari, flowers and vermilion powder (Sindoor). The temple had been an ancient sacrificial site and till date, sacrifices are offered here. Every morning, group of devotees come to sacrifice goats.

The temple is very much ancient in its origin, yet it was restructured in 1665, when it was attacked by the Muslim invaders. The effort of this reconstruction was made by King Nar Narayan of Cooch, Bihar. The spire of this temple is shaped like a beehive. Besides Kamakhya Devi, there are images of Ganesha, Chamundeswari and various dancing sculptures. In the temple, an image of the King and related inscriptions are visible.

Essentially, the Goddess 'Kamakhya' is believed to be the granter of desires. In traditional terms, Assam is known as 'Kamarupa Desa', a place that is associated with Tantric practices and worship of Shakti. In Kalika Purana (an ancient scripture), Kamakhya is referred as the goddess who fulfills all desires, the bride of Lord Shiva and the benefactor of salvation.

Hi,
Left chennai on thursday night, arrived kamakhya station on sunday 4.20am, by 5.00am, (it was like 7.30am chennai sun), asked the auto guy for brahmaputra river, said it would be rs.150, hmmm.... fleecing,
came out of the station, enquired a nearby roadside tea stall, asked me to go straight and then right, From the station road, it was complete 15 minutes walk, it was near railway supdt. of police office, the entire stretch of the river was empty, hence kept my bag and purse everything in front of me and took a bath, it was superb. every river was different. in sangam, in kasi, at haridwar.... If you don't want to take bath in the river, no problem, at the hills above near the kamakhya temple, you can find a kund, you can have the bath there.

It would be another 15 minutes hill walk or by bus, once again came to the road (the railway station end), took a bus to the kamakhya temple arch, cost me rs.10/-, shared jeep, there once again shared cars, jeep, bus are found. car-20,jeep-10, bus-rs.5/-, took a car since the guy pulled every one literally coming there, it was a 10 minute ride to the hill top, it was sunday and was rush, normally it takes within 30 minutes, I took a rs.100/- ticket, (also found rs.500/- per person) entered the queue at 6.30, the counter opened at 7.15am, got the darshan at 12.15pm noon, almost 6 hours,
Now keep in mind to take an empty small bottle(big ones won't do), palm size bottles are sold for rs.10/-, else purchase a rs.10 water bottle, pet bottle, when going inside the temple, you find the deity, in the hall, most people drown all the offerings there itself. please don't do it. You have to go down the steps to find the garba graha, there won't be any statue, the rock will be covered, give the plastic bottle to the priest, he will fill it, take it home, especially for women folks at home, sprinkle water(don't know whether you can drink), now give all the flower and offerings there, come out, some steps below the temple, you can find chinnamasta devi...
Have food at the hotels, for rs.40/- you get stomach full rice,

don't miss the dirgeshwari temple(adhi kamakya temple- shakti peeth) Need to go to fashion bazaar, from here you got to take a boat to the other side of the brahmaputra river, and from there go to durga mandir, take a share auto cost rs.15/. there is a direct auto available from kamakhya temple to dirgeshwari, but you need to shell you seperately from your pocket. Since it will be a private auto.

Anyway don't miss the tara devi temple and nalhateshwari temple enroute.
