In pancha-upacAra pUja we offer Ghantam, doopam/gandham, pushpam, deepam and naivedyam. These five correspond to five Indriyas of Sound, smell, touch, sight and taste. These Indriyas correspond to pancha bhutAs of Air, Earth, Water, Fire and Space. The five materials, Indriyas, bhutAs are manifestation of ONE paramatma. Our pUja offerings link all of them.
For eg., we offer smell (fragrance) by burning some form of earth. We offer sound through vibrations of air by bell. We offer touch of flowers that arise in water. We offer sight by fire of deepam. We offer taste by naivedyam spread across space. These symbolize submission of our five Indriyas to paramAtmA through the pancha bhutAs.
Shiva-shakti have different characteristics, but yet remain inseparable in ardhanareeswara form. Ardha-nareeswara stotram does panca upacAra pujA to ardha nareeswara form in its first 5 stanzas. In the next 3 it talks about the inseparable shiva-shakti separate to create, nurture and destroy the Universe. This is correlated with tiruvembai 10.
