Appointment of Governors

The President of India has announced today the appointment of Governors to some states. The issue of appontment of Governor has been made political long back. About T.N. politics, Cho used to write, "jeyichchaa M.L.A., thoththaa vaariyath thalaivar" (If you win, you become an MLA and if you loose, you would be appointed the Chairman of some Govt. corporation). Congress Party extended this culture with Governor appointment.
1. A politically political leader would become the C.M. and not so saavy would become the Governor (Rosaiah, for example).
2. After having been in the position of C.M. for too long, one gets the position of Governor
3. When one can not win elections, then one gets appointed as Governor
4. One can take turns among the position of State Minister, Central Minister and Governor depending upon one's clout.

But what is disturbing in the current round is the age of appointees. They are in their late 70s or early 80s. Why does one need power at this age? What can the country gain from such people? Is Governor post a viagra for their lust (for position)? Congress party has been doing a big shame to India in every aspect. And this one is no exception.

We have heard of socialism but it is now Soniaism! :loco: So much so for a party which is existing for more than 100 years!

In any case what power does a governor enjoy, except when there is instability in the legislature? Governor's post, like President's post, is ornamental in normal times. Yes, they can create problems for the CM at the behest of central government.

Appada, Oru vazhia SSBarnala is going out of Rajbhavan Chennai.Too much done for him by congress,MMS.He allowed His Office to be misused by His relatives and close Aids.

I want to make a minor correction. The Present Ruling congress party is just 42 years .This Party was formed by Madam Indira in the year 1969 as Congress(I) after the original Congress Party which got freedom from British rule divided into two as Congress (O) and Congress (I).
Subsequently Congress (O) merged with Janata Party.

It is a normal human tendency to ensure some sort of "sinecure" once they can no longer continue enjoy the position of power and comforts, due either to retirement or the expiry of their term of employment, as in the case of elected representatives of people. Hence over the period of years many avenues have been evolved for providing such sinecures. Most of us also know these avenues.

The post of Governors of States under the Indian Constitution came up because the founding fathers of our Constitution were faced with a dilemma; on the one hand,in the federal structure which was envisaged, the states had to be given as much autonomy as possible, while on the other, there was the supreme need to keep the federated structure in cohesion and functioning under the Constitution. The Governor's role ideally is to ensure these two are ensured. But, like many other noble ideals of the founding fathers of the Constitution, this office has also been misused, and rather grossly with the result that it has become a sinecure for cringing political nobodys who are only too willing to function as "Chamchas" of the party ruling at the centre. Sonia is not an only example nor an exception to the practice, imo.

Reg whether Governors have power, I actually meant the legal perks they enjoy - free mansion to live, flash cars for travel, servants, free medical treatment, etc. etc. These people are of no use to the public.

Reg. SSB's misuse, I also came to know about it. Sad.

Reg. the history of Congress, yes, I am aware. But C(I) has now become synonymous with Congress. I believe they no longer refer to it as Congress (I) but as Indian National Congress (INC).

Reg. Mr.Sangom's observation, yes, Sonia is following "the rich tradition" set by other Congress (I) leaders.

Why not appoint really knowledgable young people to such positions and "revitalise" such positions? We instead have H.Bharadwaj, whose only job is to give trouble to BJP.

Of late, we have seen Governors being appointed by the Central Government just to satisfy the loyal political candidates of a party who have been unable to regain power in their home state. As a token of gratitude, these people are loyal to the higher ups and act as agents of the ruling party in the Central Government. Of course, this post is honorable at the fag end of their lives as they are assured of their monthly income.

The position becomes more sensitive if the post is filled in a state where the political party is not an ally of the ruling party in the Central Government.

Latest example would be in the State of Karnataka. The Governor was appointed with a purpose to destabilise the ruling party in the State. The person occupying the post of Governor did his best stating that he was acting as per law, rules and regulations laid out in the Constitution.

The Central Government should appoint persons who have neutral alliances to a political party. Only then, the State can improve in the planned development programs.

Otherwise trouble shooting Governors make matters worse by creating unnecessary news for blocking the development plans and programs of the State. People in the State just get fed up of witnessing such incidents.

TN is glad that its administration from wheelchair is gone for good: it was awkward, both CM and Gov. going around in their wheelchairs. Hopefully, the administration is now on its feet, will walk the path of progress smoothly and its machinery will run in full swing over the next years.

Shri Haridasa Siva,

The unwritten rule today is from Governor's post, next climb is to "Lotus feet of the Lord". So, no young person will opt for it; really knowledgeable - never!

Talking about perks this country has thousands of useless fellows enjoying all sorts of perks under one name or the other. I can cite one instance which is from hearsay - please note. One powerful official in the banking world wanted a sinecure for himself after retirement when the fashion was for such fellows to start some "International Institute of XYZ" in one privileged area of New Delhi, cringe and canvass some study or another from the finance ministry, employ some unemployed youth and conduct some survey, mostly in a half-hearted and unsupervised manner(because the man in-charge won't leave his creature comforts in his sinecure!) and present that report to some bigwigs in the Govt. establishment, if possible with media coverage. The report will promptly go into the archives of the concerned ministry and gather dust till it perishes ultimately.

This official did not want all such hassles and since he was quite powerful, the system of "Banking Ombudsman" came into being!

This is how sinecures are created.
