AIIMS in Tamil Nadu: Central team inspects proposed site in Madurai

CHENNAI: As part of the Centre's move to establish an All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Tamil Nadu, a high level team on Thursday inspected a proposed site at Thoppur in Madurai district.




Thoppur is one of the five proposed sites to establish an AIIMS. Perundurai in Erode district, Pudukkottai, Sekkipatti in Thanjavur district and Chengalpet in Kancheepuram district are the other proposed sites.

A five-member team led by Dharitri Panda, joint secretary, Union ministry of health and family welfare, inspected the proposed site at Thoppur. J Balachander from JIPMER, N L Sathish from NIMHANS, Sachin Mahendru, architect, and L Chandrasekharan, under-secretary, are the other members of the team.

District collector L Subramanian accompanied the team and explained the advantages of the site at Thoppur. He promised the team that adequate drinking water, sewerage facility and road facility would be provided.

He told them that the site is just 15km from the proposed new airport. He highlighted the there is good road connectivity from the proposed site to the southern districts.

On Wednesday, the team visited a proposed site at Perundurai. The team will inspect other sites in the coming days and submit a report to the central government. The government will choose a site based on the team's report.
