Ahead Of Ram Rahim Verdict, Court Says Haryana Government Has Failed
Ram Rahim's cult of personality includes rhinestone-heavy costumes, some of them in leather, and the odd appearance on a high-end motorbike.

Security has been increased ahead of the verdict in the case against Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh.

Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh accused of rape, verdict tomorrow
He has tweeted he will be in court, at least 1 lakh devotees arrive
Towns of Panchkula, Chandigarh brace for possible violence
Barely two kms from where a court will tomorrow declare whether self-styled guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh is guilty of rape, formidable groups of his followers have gathered on both sides of the road. The police estimates a lakh all and in this part of the town of Panchkula, it is easily out-numbered.

Groups of followers who are called "Premis" gathered on the side of the highway near the court said ''hundreds more of us will come by truck today." Naresh Kumar Insan arrived from Delhi three days back and is staying on the footpath, such is his devotion.

There is restricted entry now for Panchkula, a small town in Haryana about 15 kms from Chandigarh. A spokesperson for Ram Rahim's sect, called the Dera Sacha Sauda, says in what seems to be an exaggerated claim that there are at least 20 lakh "premis" in Panchkula for tomorrow's big ruling. As tension swells, their leader has called for peace on Twitter while disclosing that he will appear in person in the courthouse tomorrow. That's likely to throw the crowds into a frenzy.

"If that happens, we will ensure that proceedings happen peacefully and there is absolutely no disruption," said BS Sandhu, the top police officer in Haryana. "We intend to seal the entire court premises and shall not allow anybody to enter it, or from nearby."

The Punjab and Haryana High Court isn't impressed with the arrangements. It rebuked the Haryana government today for failing to maintain law and order, given the large presence of premis in Panchkula.

Groups of followers who are called "Premis" gathered on the side of the highway near the court.
But clusters of hundreds of premis have already taken position near the courthouse. Sahil Insan, an 18-year-old who travelled by bus from Patiala and then walked 11 kms along with his friends, says the whole point of his journey is to get a glimpse of the 50-year-old guru who has starred in two movies called Messenger of God ('MSG") and its sequel in which he jiu jitsus the bad guys into the air.

Ram Rahim's cult of personality includes rhinestone-heavy costumes, some of them in leather, and the odd appearance on a high-end motorbike. He travels largely in a convoy of bullet-proof cars, part of the perks of the Z+ security given to him by the government of Haryana, where his sprawling campus is located in the town of Sirsa.

From Sirsa to Panchkula is a five-hour journey by road; many premis we spoke to said their travel was impelled by the need for solidarity at a time when their chief is fighting "fake charges."

The case, filed in 2002, accuses Ram Rahim of sexually exploiting two women followers at his ashram; he has denied any wrongdoing. Separately, a court has asked the CBI to investigate whether he encouraged 400 men to undergo castration, promising it would benefit them spiritually.

Chandigarh, which has a large prayer centre that doubles up as a major organizational office of the sect, is in total lockdown. Schools and colleges are closed, major roads are being patrolled by the police and buses are being stopped from heading towards Panchkula.

Those who have already made it into the town are using the local Ghaggar river to wash; some are cooking on its banks and helping new arrivals to settle in.

At least 17 people were killed and several injured in violence unleashed by Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh’s followers after he was convicted by a special CBI court in Panchkula in a 15-year old rape case on Friday. “Seventeen people are dead and at least 150 are injured,” said a govt official in Panchkula. More casualties are feared as a stream of ambulances were still bringing in seriously injured people soaked in blood to the civil hospital. The agitated supporters set on fire many government buildings, including a local telephone exchange and LIC office. They also attacked many media vehicles and injured journalists, expressing their anger over the CBI court verdict.
The CBI court held Gurmeet Ram Rahim guilty of rape and criminal intimidation. “The Dera chief has been convicted, held guilty for rape. He was held guilty on charges of rape (Section 376 IPC) and criminal intimidation (Section 506 IPC),” CBI counsel HPS Verma confirmed to The Indian Express. The argument on his sentencing will begin on Monday. He is likely to face seven-year imprisonment. Just after the verdict Ram Rahim Singh was taken into custody by Haryana Police. He was later taken to Rohtak jail. The verdict came as a big set back to Gurmeet’s followers who have converged in large numbers in Panchkula for last few days.

Two railway stations in Punjab were set on fire by followers of Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim, soon after the self-styled godman was convicted. Malout and Balluanna railway stations were partially torched by the angry followers as violence spread across Punjab in the aftermath of the court’s verdict, officials said.

Barricades were put up about three kilometres from the sprawling headquarters of the Dera. Security personnel were equipped with teargas shells and water cannons. The mounted police was also pressed into service. After the verdict was announced, thousands of people came out of the headquarters and reached the barricades, police said. Plumes of dark smoke could be seen at a distance near the headquarters. It is suspected that the supporters may have torched some vehicles.
Delhi was put on high alert in the wake of incidents of violence in Haryana following the conviction of Ram Rahim Singh. A bus was torched in northeast Delhi’s Loni Chowk also, allegedly by Dera supporters. A senior police officer said that even though there have been no specific inputs of Dera followers planning to create trouble here, security has been beefed up in the national capital as a precautionary measure. The security in areas bordering Haryana has been heightened, the police said.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has taken stock of the situation in Haryana, Punjab and Chandigarh in the wake of violence, a home ministry official said. Singh also called up chief ministers of Haryana and Punjab, Manohar Lal Khattar and Amarinder Singh respectively, who briefed him about the current situation and the steps taken to restore normalcy, the official said. Singh also held a high-level meeting with top officials and reviewed the situation.

Earlier in the day, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar asked Gurmeet’s followers to maintain peace and said arrangements have been made to deal with all possible situations. “Once the verdict comes, whatever situation arises, to deal with that, every possible arrangement has been made,” Khattar said in a video message. “I appeal to people of Haryana, especially Dera ‘premis’ (followers) to maintain peace and brotherhood,” he added.

Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Ram Rahim had also yesterday night released a video and asked his followers to abide by the law.
The sexual exploitation case was registered against the Dera chief in 2002 by the CBI on the directions of the Punjab and Haryana High Court after anonymous letters were circulated about the alleged sexual exploitation of two ‘sadhvis’ (female followers) by Ram Rahim Singh.

widespread violence in Haryana and parts of
Delhi, NOIDA, Ghaziabad 28 life lost more than 200 injured...seems very sad state of affairs..

Shocking lack of application by the Haryana CM Khattar...He seems to allow things to drift before taking semblance of action...A lame duck CM!!

Asaram Bapu and Gurmeet Ram Rahim, both "gurus" were charged with a similar crime. Both should have been speedy trial.
But in India, things take its own time.

One is spending time, in a jail waiting for trial, the other enjoyed luxuries of life in public. What a travesty of justice.

There are many. One more self styled Guru, Rampal also from Haryana faced many charges including Murder. It took more than a week for the forces to enter his premises called Satalok ashram during 2014. A clipping appeared in news papers...
"Sant Rampal, another self-styled godman, used to work as a junior engineer in the Haryana irrigation department before becoming a guru. He was arrested by the police in November 2014 after a 30-hour-long standoff with paramilitary forces, who wanted to enter his Satlok Ashram to enforce a court warrant for his arrest on a series of charges, including conspiracy to murder. Rampal's supporters-cum-militia, armed with stones, petrol bombs and other weapons, had tried their best to prevent the paramilitary from entering the ashram and arrest their guru. He was subsequently charged with sedition. Six people had died during the standoff."

Radhey-Maa is another controversial figure facing many charges. She also enjoy a select cult of influential people in her support.

And how can we forget Nityananda?

Just read that even Gods have feet of clay..... while so Godmen like Gurmeet Ram Rahim are not exceptions...

We have number of Babas undergoing imprisonment, few undergoing trial and few facing charges for commission of criminal and economic offences which are Under Investigation, etc

Even God could not save these Godmen from prison...

And there may be few in the waiting list...

We believe and pray God born inside a prison...

These Babas may convert prisons into Ashram....

Foreign media on Ram Rahim: India's godmen grow in clout, fill void left by state
Spiritual gurus are believed to possess unique healing powers, and are popular among those whose economic insecurities are outpacing the state's ability to deliver.

1Ram Rahim's conviction for rape sparked riots by his followers killing 38 people.
2Spiritual gurus have always been popular in India.
3Politicians too woo these gurus in order to garner votes through their followers.
Days before his conviction on Friday for rape, Indian spiritual guru Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh launched a month of lavish birthday celebrations, waiting on a stage at his cult's vast compound to be greeted by politicians donating tens of thousands of dollars to his organisation.
Singh, whose conviction for raping two women sparked riots by his followers that killed 38 people, exemplifies the power - and controversy - of a band of so-called "godmen" whose stature is growing in modern-day India.
A movie star, singer and cult leader with a penchant for all things bling, Singh commands the support of large numbers of mostly poorer people in northern India.
Spiritual gurus are believed to possess unique healing powers, and are popular among those whose economic insecurities are outpacing the state's ability to deliver. As India becomes wealthier and increasing numbers of people feel left behind, they turn to gurus for spiritual and material sustenance.
"Baba blessings have changed my life. I used to drink daily, fight with my wife and spend a lot of money on health," said a local farmer and follower of Singh. He declined to be named as he feared police action after the guru was handed two 10-year jail sentences on Monday.
"My family says now I am a changed man and there is a peace in our lives," the farmer said, adding he would continue to follow Singh and his Dera Sacha Sauda group from its base in Sirsa, 240 kms (149 miles) from New Delhi in the state of Haryana.
At his sprawling 700-odd acre compound, Singh offers free medical treatment and schooling, showcases his latest films and churns out organic food products under his MSG, or "Messenger of God", branding.
National cricket heroes come to pay their respects; journalists wait for him to emerge from his underground living quarters; his sermons attract tens of thousands.
"Poorer people want an escape route and the deras are considered an escape route. They give people solace, hope," said Professor Sukhdev Singh Sohal at Guru Nanak Dev University.
He estimates that close to 2.5 million people follow gurus, or deras, in the states of Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana.
MORE MONEY, MORE VISIBLE
Gurus have long existed in India, where the majority religion, Hinduism, lacks formal organised structures that would limit the emergence of self-ordained men claiming to embody god.
They are also popular in areas populated by Sikhs, including in Punjab and Haryana where Singh's devotees largely live.
Many gurus also play a positive role in the lives of their followers: delivering charity to the needy, and providing ostracised lower-castes with the hope that they need not be trapped by rigid caste hierarchies.
The new generation of guru is, however, less the wandering ascetic, and more a powerful, flamboyant personality, often rich, and with the means to summon supporters on to the streets.
Some of Singh's followers said they were ready to die for him. He faces separate allegations that he encouraged up to 400 of his followers to undergo castration, a charge he denies, but which critics say demonstrates his ability to brainwash.
Other gurus, while less controversial, are hugely influential.
Baba Ramdev, a friend of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, runs the Patanjali consumer goods brand that has boomed in recent years. Another, Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, is popular among wealthier members of society and has a large following in North America.
Their power has been left unchecked by politicians who prefer to woo the godmen to deliver their armies of supporters as votes. Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has enjoyed support from Singh in recent elections.
"There is part fear and part reverence of these gurus among politicians. That's why they have an enormous amount of informal power," said Santosh Desai, an Indian social commentator.
"The gurus are more visible today, they have more money. There is a more consumerist sheen to them. They are brands," he said, adding that men like Singh had successfully combined religious tradition with materialism to appeal to a more aspirational population.
At the start of Singh's 50th birthday celebrations on Aug. 15, several ministers from Haryana's ruling BJP greeted Singh. One gifted his organisation 5.1 million rupees ($79,812) for developing sports facilities, according to a video of the celebrations released by one of Singh's TV networks and local media reports.
Ronki Ram, a political scientist who has studied gurus extensively, said Singh's imprisonment - his lawyer said on Monday he would appeal - would undermine his support base, and followers would gradually drift away.
But it would not mean the end of the godmen.
"Politicians come to seek votes, people come to find answers to their social and psychological problems. Then more people come because they think if the politician is coming, he (the guru) must be important," he told Reuters.
"It's a vicious circle."

Indian politicians are smart.

When slowly bad acts of these fake swamis come to light and swamis become indefensible, they remove their patronage quietly and let the erring swami hang.

The politicians then move on to find another one to live on.

Now we have Asaram and niyananda inviting attention of law.

Swamis better lie low.

They are on radar of law enforcing agencies.

There are commercial swami like yoga guru pushing ayurvedic produces, sadhguru jaggi vasudev enjoying patronage of ruling class, art of living salesman sri sri

ravishankar. These are coming into limelight due to political patronage of hindutva leaders of ruling class.

Sexual crimes committed in the name of God: A look back at 'Swami' Nithyananda's 'sex contract'

nithyananda%20courtesy%20website-compressed.jpg

While Gurmeet Ram Rahim gave ‘maafi’ to devotees, Nityananda followers were made to sign a contract where they agreed to ‘sexual enlightenment’.

Self-proclaimed godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for the rape of two saadhvis at the Dera Sacha Sauda ashram. But the crime this rapist has been convicted for, is merely the tip of an iceberg shrouded in a dark web of lies and deceit practiced by the 'Guru'.

More horrors in his premises allegedly took place with the consent of followers - castration of male devotees, being the most gruesome of them.

From 2000, over 400 followers were reportedly brought under the scalpel in Dera Sacha Sauda hospital for bringing them closer to God.

But it isn’t just Gurmeet Singh who extracted sexual favours under ‘divine’ pretexts, cloaking them in secrecy. The survivors of sexual assaults in 'Swami' Nithyananda's ashram have spoken out about non-disclosure agreements and sex contracts. The chargesheet of the rape case against Nithyananda reveals that sexual exploitation was masked in the guise of a 'Learning from the Master' programme.

The mental conditioning

The chargesheet filed by the police in the Ramanagara court in November 2010 on a case of rape allegedly committed by Nityananda, speaks of five non-disclosure agreements signed by various victims.

In 2009, a 'special' group of men and women gathered in a room at the Nithyananda Dhyanapeetam, which is led by the 'godman' in Bidadi.

They were not just the regular followers of 'swamiji'. In fact they were a chosen few, who would take care of him and help in the running of his foundation.

On that particular day, they were given two sets of "non-disclosure agreement" contracts to sign in the presence of their leader.
Signing these would make them eligible for the "Learning from the Master" programme. Such was their blind trust in the self-proclaimed godman that most of them signed the papers without even reading the clauses, says the chargesheet.

The 'Sex Contract'

The most appalling section of the 10 page contract included in the chargesheet reads -

"Volunteer understands that the Program may involve the learning and practice of ancient tantric secrets associated with male and female ecstasy, including the use of sexual energy for increased intimacy/spiritual connection, pleasure, harmony, and freedom. Volunteer understands that these activities could be physically and mentally challenging, and may involve nudity, access to visual images, graphic visual depictions, and descriptions of nudity and sexual activity, close physical proximity and intimacy, verbal and written descriptions and audio sounds of a sexually oriented, and erotic nature, etc."

The dark side of India’s self-styled godmen | Murali Krishnan

An increasing number of so-called "spiritual" gurus or "godmen" in India are implicated in ghastly crimes ranging from sexual abuse to murder. Murali Krishnan from New Delhi explores the reasons behind it.

Last week, a 23-year-old law student in the southern state of Kerala chopped off the genitals of a self-proclaimed holy man who tried to rape her and who she alleged has been sexually assaulting her for the past eight years. She realized that there was no other way to escape her tormentor.

The young woman was at home in the southern city of Thiruvananthapuram when she was allegedly attacked by Gangeshananda Theerthapada, who claimed to be a spiritual healer and visited their home frequently to cure her bed-ridden father.

Theerthapada, also known as Sree Hari, has preached at several temples in Kerala and was revered by hundreds of Hindu families in the state.

Charged with rape, he now joins the long and dubious list of several self-styled gurus presently languishing in various prisons nationwide for numerous sexual assault offences.

Sex scandals increase

It is not uncommon for the sprawling network of godmen, gurus and swamis in the Hindu-majority country of more than a billion people to commit sexual crimes.

Strangely, millions of Indians seem to be in thrall of these smooth-talking "godmen" who have built vast empires preying on their gullibility.

Three years ago, police had to battle the supporters of Rampal Singh Jatin, a controversial guru from the northern state of Haryana before they could arrest him. Their investigations uncovered sordid details about the supposedly holy man’s sex life - a world of abuse and excess that was just as remarkable as his sprawling abode.

He preferred "hostesses," whom he called "sadhikayaen" and during the raids police recovered pregnancy kits from Rampal’s room, besides sexual potency drugs.

"For a man who claimed to be an incarnation of the 15th century mystic poet Kabir, he had all the trappings of luxury. Women were integral," an investigator told DW.

Another self-styled spiritual godman, Asaram Bapu, was arrested in 2013 after a teenage girl accused him of rape. She claimed that the guru lured her by promising to cleanse her of evil spirits.

Asaram Bapu was arrested in 2013 after a teenage girl accused him of rape

It wasn’t the first time criminal charges were leveled against him. In 2008, two young boys died in his retreat in the western state of Gujarat. His trusted lieutenants, however, say all the charges against Bapu are fabrications.

Mahendra Giri, 65, was also arrested in 2013 for illegally confining and repeatedly raping a 24-year-old woman at his ashram over four months. Apparently, the victim’s husband and mother-in-law were his accomplices. All three have now been imprisoned.

Asaram, Gurmeet Ram Rahim on fake baba list: Meet the 14 faces Hindu sadhus want boycotted

The Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad has released a list of 14 ‘fake babas’ and demanded a crackdown on “rootless cult leaders” by bringing in a legislation.

default_author.png

Prompted by recent controversies surrounding self-styled godmen, the apex body of Hindu sadhus -- the Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad – has released a list of 14 ‘fake babas’ and demanded a crackdown on “rootless cult leaders” by bringing in a legislation.
Giving out the list, the parishad’s president Swami Narendra Giri said: “We appeal to even the common people to beware of such charlatans who belong to no tradition and by their questionable acts, bring disrepute to sadhus and sanyasis.”
Here are the 14 fake babas on the parishad’s list:
Asaram Bapu (Asumal Sirumalani)
The 76-year-old white-bearded man was arrested in 2013 after a teenage devotee accused him of raping her at a religious event. Another female follower later also accused him of rape. He has been in jail since 2013 on charges of rape and criminal intimidation. Yet Asaram continues to have thousands of supporters flock to court when he appears for hearings.
Several local newspapers have reported on the mysterious killings of three witnesses in the criminal cases he faces.
Radhe Maa (Sukhwinder Kaur)
A Punjab resident, Sukhwinder Kaur later changed her name to Radhe Maa and moved to Mumbai. She hosts regular religious events at her Radhe Maa Bhawan located in Boriwali. The Punjab and Haryana high court recently issued a notice against a police official asking why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against him for failing to act on a complaint against Kaur.
A Phagwara-based man had lodged a complaint against her, seeking registration of a case in 2015 for allegedly hurting religious sentiments, threatening and other offences under the IPC.
Last year, Mumbai resident Niki Gupta filed a complaint, accusing Kaur of instigating her in-laws against her for dowry.
Sachchidanand Giri (Sachin Datta)
He is called ‘Builder Baba’ by many. Sachin Dutta alias Sachidanand Giri had been declared a proclaimed offender in a case registered with the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the Delhi Police and was later arrested from his house in Lucknow.
In 2015, a case of fraud had been registered at Sector 58, Noida against Dutta and seven others for allegedly mortgaging sold flats in an Indirapuram housing society to obtain bank loans. The case was subsequently transferred to the Indirapuram police station and the accused declared a proclaimed offender.
Gurmeet Singh
Dera Sacha Sauda chief Gurmeet Singh, known as the guru of bling for the bejeweled costumes he wears in self-produced films, was recently sentenced to 20 years’ jail after being convicted of raping two female followers. Hundreds of his followers went on the rampage when he was convicted, attacking train stations, buses and television vans.
Secret tunnels, including one which linked the jailed sect chief plush residence with female disciples’ hostel, an empty box of AK-47 cartridges, an illegal firecracker factory were among the detections made during a search at his sect headquarters.
Swami Omji (Vinodanand Jha)
In November 2008, an FIR was registered against Vinodanand Jha aka Swami Omji on a complaint by his younger brother Pramodh Jha, who accused him of breaking the lock of his bicycle shop in Lodhi Colony along with three men and stealing 11 bicycles, expensive spare parts, sale deed of the house and important documents.
The self-proclaimed godman also faces charges under the Arms Act, Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act in other matters.

Nirmal Baba (Nirmaljeet Singh)
Nirmaljeet Singh Narula, better known as Nirmal Baba, has appeared on television as part of his show, ‘Third Eye of Nirmal Baba’. This Jharkhand-raised self-styled godman shot to fame through the controversy surrounding the donations and the charging of admission fees (Rs. 2,000 per person) to his ‘darbar’ sessions. He is estimated to be worth hundreds of crores and has a huge following despite dispensing advice bordering on the absurd. He even has an app on Facebook called ‘Live Darshan 24/7’. A polarising figure, Nirmal Baba has ardent devotees and vocal doubters.
