Agatheeswara Temple -Pozhichalur

Presiding Deity:
Agatheeswar

The Agastheeswara Temple is situated near Chennai, behind the Chennai airport, at a distance of 2 Km. from Pallavaram railway station. This is the only place in North Tamil Nadu, among the Thondai Mandala Navgraha Parihara Sthalam dedicated to Saturn.

Lord Shani(Saturn)has different phases like Kanda Sani, Janma Sani, Ezharai Sani. Sri Sani bhagavan is said to have been relieved of his sins by performing penenace to Lord Shiva. As directed by Lord Shiva he visited this village and created a holy pond called “Nallar Sani Theertham” and worshipped Lord Shiva and was cleansed of his sins. Hence he is seen in this temple as the prime God (only next to Thirunallar). In the north Tamil Nadu this is the only temple dedicated to Lord Sani where devotees throng in large numbers to get relief from the impact of Sani.

In this temple, when offerings of food are made, crows (that are believed to be the vehicle of Lord Shani)come in large numbers to eat the food offered. During this time, devotees gather in large numbers and feed the crows to get themselves relieved of their sins.

This is an ancient temple in which there is a Swayambu Lingam and was built during the 12th century when Chozha kings were ruling the land. When saint Agathiya returned from Himalayas to Podhigai hills, he stayed here for a short while and worshipped here and hence the deity here came ot be known as Agatheeswarar and the goddess Aananthavalli.

In this temple, the presiding deity faces the east and the Goddess faces the south direction. In the month of Chitirai,on the dates 7,8,9 when the sun rises in the east, its rays fall only on the Sivalingam, which is inside this temple and there is a entrance gate to this temple facing North.
