After Patels, now Brahimns in Gujarat demand reservation

The Samaj officer-bearers held a day-long meeting in Vadodara on Friday and passed a number of resolutions in support of their various demands, including reservation and salary for Brahmin priests.

Amid the ongoing agitation by Patels for quota, an organisation of Brahmins inGujarat has demanded reservation for community members in Government jobs and educational institutes in the State. All Gujarat Brahm Samaj also wants the Government to pay monthly salary to Brahmin priests serving in temples across the State.

The Samaj officer-bearers held a day-long meeting in Vadodara on Friday and passed a number of resolutions in support of their various demands, including reservation and salary for Brahmin priests, its President Shailesh Joshi said.

That day is not far off when NRIs will demand reservation in MP, MLA and local body elections, citing their contribution in many areas!.

Sashi taroor I think has called them 'economic refugees"

Is there any possibility that Tamil Brahmins could raise their voice asking "Amma" for providing reservation for Brahmin community members in Government jobs and educational institutions in Tamilnadu.

Though there is a long history of Tamil Brahmins fighting for reservation in Tamil Nadu, this is the recent representation.

Will the Government headed by a Brahmin pass favourable orders??

This following news item is self-explanatory:

"Give reservation to Brahmins, AIADMK member asks Jayalalithaa

Brahmin Youth Federation of India also wants a welfare board forpoor amongst upper castes, extension of welfare schemes to poor Brahmins andminority status to Brahmins

K. Ramasubramanian, a seniorrepresentative of the AIADMK from Coimbatore, has appealed to party generalsecretary and Tamil Nadu Chief MinisterJ. Jayalalithaato give 10 per cent reservation to Brahmins in education andemployment.
Ramasubramanian is aconvenor of Brahmin Youth Federation of India (BYFI) and, in a formal letter toJayalalithaa, he made six requests.
Apart from reservation toBrahmins, he said the BYFI wanted a welfare board for poor amongst uppercastes, extension of government welfare schemes to poor Brahmins, minoritystatus to Brahmins in the state, carrying out caste-based census in the stateon priority and adequate representation in the legislative assembly.

One or two cases of requests put forth by some enthusiastic individuals once in a while could not be construed as a fight / crusade for the cause. There need a sustained effort.
Besides this stray request, any other organisations like ******* (Regd),******* (Un-Regd) etc. did take any initiative in this regard?
Whether there is any possibility for all TBs to unite together and fight?

Just go through this link relating to the year 1995:

"Silent no more

The Brahmins of Tamil Nadu are known to be docile. But last month, 2,500 furious Tamil Brahmins from Madras and Chengalpattu districts - all members of the Tamil Brahmins Association (*******) - went on a one-day hunger strike to demand 20 per cent reservations for forward communities.

Given the state's history of anti-Brahminism, and its 69 per cent reservations for the backward castes - who also dominate the open competition lists - Brahmins have felt like outcasts.

The ******* was formed in 1980 to empower the community. Says ******* President V. Balasubramanian: "From an estimated 60 lakh population in 1947, 20 lakh migrated to north India between 1950 and 1970 owing to Dravidian pressure."

And if you want to know more just explore google search engine, you find lot of information on the topic.

Like charity, 'Unity' should begin at home.

As per the old census tamil brahmin population was 3%. Currently it can either be 3 or less than that. So the maximum possible reservation cannot exceed 3%. Asking for reservation on a caste basis can become detrimental and may create a ceiling of 3% in many areas. Currently in the top engineering and medical colleges the brahmin student strength is more than 3%, so even if there there is reservation there is not going to be any additional intake of brahmin students. There is a growing feeling among the public against reservation, so at this point asking for a useless 3% reservation will only strengthen the existing reservation structure.

Thanks for your kind information.

At present *******(Regd) president SriRaman of Salem and general secretary Pammal Ramakrishnan are appear to be sympathisers of Amma. They even participated in the agitational programmes when Amma was arrested in the case and lauded when she was acquitted. They even talk in Brahmin's forum for the cause of reservation.

Regarding your question

"Though there is a long history of Tamil Brahmins fighting for reservation in Tamil Nadu, this is the recent representation.

it appears that no representation worth mentioning is done with collective wisdom. The head of the Govt. never acknowledged in any public forum that she is a Brahmin. How could we expect any favourable orders(!!!)

How can one expect the head of the Government, who is heading a Dravidian Party to declare her caste in an open Forum. It is already open and known to everyone and hence needs no revelation.

You may just go through this link:

"Why Jayalalitha chose Srirangam

Excerpts:

Meanwhile, it was Jayalalitha who sprung the surprise with her decision to contest from the temple town of Srirangam even though she had dropped a few hints earlier.

Nobody sees any political reasons behind her decision, as there are many safe seats for her party, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, in Tamil Nadu. There could only be for sentimental reasons -- she is a native of Srirangam.

Srirangam, a part of Tiruchirapalli or Trichy, is an island with river Kaveri on one side and a Kaveri tributary on the other. A large chunk of the island's population is Vaishnavite Brahmin (followers of Lord Vishnu). No wonder then that Jayalalitha -- a devout Hindu and an Iyengar -- chose a place dominated by Iyengars to contest the assembly elections.

If you have got any dispute over the veracity of the text appeared in the news report, you are free to sue them. Anyway she has not disputed it. And Rediff is not a local news paper.

This is what Wikipedia says;
[h=2]Early life and education[edit][/h]Jayalalithaa was born on 25 February 1948, at Melukote, in Pandavapura taluk of Mandya district, Mysore State (now Karnataka) to Jayaram and Vedavalli in a Tamil Brahmin family.[SUP][5][6][/SUP] Her grandfather was in the service of the Mysore kingdom as a surgeon, and the prefix 'Jaya' ('the victorious') was added to the names of various family members to reflect their association with Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar of Mysore.[SUP][2][/SUP] Her mother called her Komalavalli.[SUP][[/SUP]

Nobody disputed her caste and no proof needed to establish parentage, fore fathers etc... .......Everybody knows she is a bold lady.... She never hesitated to speak frankly what she thinks.............all ok

Perhaps she might have preferred to contest from Srirangam, just to utilise the favourable environment like any other caste leader.

What she did for the brahmins, is the question?

This is one among the demands of Gujarat Brahmins.

"the BJP Government in Gujarat should follow the example of the Tamil Nadu Government and give monthly salary to all the temple priests in the State."

It is nice to see that Government of Tamil Nadu do implement certain welfare schemes which attract demand from public of other States to follow.

Sri mukundans,
Please first try to under stand the reservation system.
If the quota reservation for SC is 15 %. and say if 5 numbers of SC candidates come first in the overall rank
then these 5 SC candidates will be considered on merit in open quota and not under SC quota.
Then 15% will be filled by other SCs who could not get in open quota.

In reservation system unreserved portion is open to all (including who have reservation) on merit.

The possibility of SCs getting admission/ job , is not restricted to 15%.
In reservation system minimum i

No leader will do anything significant for their caste once they get elected and we need not expect that. When JJ is in power, the advantage is the hindutva groups can spread their roots in the state without any trouble. Also, it gives moral strength to the tamil brahmins that they have a strong leader from their community. After the era of JJ, the tamil brahmin community should focus on bringing BJP to power with Nirmala Sitharaman as the CM canditate. If that's not possible then the second best choice would be Anbumani. Though he may not be a great leader, he doesn't have anything against brahmins and he will be the second best choice. There is also a historical link. When the Pallava kings (vanniyars) ruled TN, brahmins were given great importance and were treated with the highest respect.

You have not understood my point. I am clear about the reservation system. When we have a full caste based reservation, then the entire 100% has to be divided based on the population of each caste. So 3% will become a ceiling. You're assuming that brahmins alone will be given 3% and the remaining seats will be left as Open quota. That's not at all possible. Brahmins have the lowest political strength. If they are asking 3%, then each individual caste will start asking. Currently castes are grouped as clusters like BC, MBC. There are many small castes with 4-5% population which are not adequately represented within the BC/MBC cluster. If everyone starts asking then the situation will become even worse for the brahmin community. Even in FC, there is nattukottai chettiar, saiva pillai, adhi saivar and few other forward caste. Then the total quote of forward caste also will become more. None of this is going to happen in the current scenario. Asking 3% is suicidal. Asking for 20% (or any) quota based on economic criteria will be sensible and that can gain mass support. Without the genuine support of other castes no change is possible.
