Abhivatham

To whom we should not say Abhivatham?

To males younger in age, to males belonging to lower varnas (for brahmins, this means all non-brahmins irrespective of their age), and to females. Only those who have the அதிகாரம் to learn veda/s, is abhivaadaye supposed to be made; it is not some kind of universal self-introduction. Today, most brahmin males do not know veda/s and so, by custom, the knowledge of veda part has been discarded by our tabra community for both the introduced and to the one who introduces himself ! ;)

I have heard that abhivaadaye should to be made to mother. Is it so Sangom Sir?

I have not heard so. But Shankaracharyas are not supposed to be visited by the elders in their poorvasrama, except their mothers. The mother has the right of getting namaskaram (not abhivaadaye) even from Shankaracharyas.

According to tradition maathaa, pitaa, guru and deivam are to be given namaskaaram and not simple "abhivaadaye". But this is not followed in the so-called "parishkaara" circles.
