Temple

The Saranathan Temple is a Hindu temple located in the village of Tirucherai near Kudavasal, Tiruvarur district. The presiding deity is Vishnu who is known as "Saranathan". The temple is one of the 108 Divya Desams.

This temple has two prakarams. The temple is 116 meters in length and 72 meters width with 22 meters high Raja Gopuram. There are shrines for Yoga Narasimhar and Raja Gopalaswamy with his consorts Rukmani and satyabama. It is also believed that Anjaneya blesses the devotees from the west end of Pushkarini and Ganesh from northeastern side.

Naayak King of Thanjavur, who was attached to Vishnu temples, sent construction materials to Mannargudi for the construction of the Rajagopalaswamy temple. A minister of the king decided to bring a few bricks on every trip to Thiru Cherai for the renovation of this temple.

Suspecting this, the king decided on a sudden inspection. A worried minister prayed to Rajagopalaswamy and to the surprise of the Nayak King, the Mannargudi Lord is said to have appeared before the king at Thirucherai, at the time of the inspection. A delighted king immediately allocated funds towards the construction and renovation of the Thirucherai temple.

In the inner samnctum, River Kaveri has been personified as a mother holding a child on her lap.! The importance given to forces of nature – i.e. the sun, moon, planets, stars, and every aspect of the universe like , rivers, trees, etc in our religion is indeed remarkable. Every temple honours the stala vruksham- a tree, a mount--- e.g. Garudan or Nandi ( i.e. an animal); and at Tirucherai we can see the river Kaveri in her maternal status as a life- giver.

Legend

Markandeya and Kaveri Amman meditated upon Lord Vishnu. It is also believed that brahma made a clay plot to rescue and preserve the Vedas during pralaya, but none of the pots made by Brahma whenever he tried. There upon he was directed by Lord Vishnu to proceed to Thirucherai (Saara Kshetram) and make a pot out of the clay on the banks of kaveri, and thus the Vedas were protected in a pot made out of tough mud at this place.

Once Ganga, Cauvery and other big rivers were playing at the foot of the Vindhya Hills. A Gandharva, who was passing by, waited for a minute and saluted them. Peculiar to know who he looked at, they approached the Gandharva who answered that his salute was addressed at the senior most among them.

While the rest of them gave way, Ganga and Cauvery got into an argument as to who was senior among the two and went to Brahmma for the decision. Brahma pronounced that the water he used for the special pooja of Lord Vishnu flowed down as the Ganges and hence she was the most sacred.

Depressed by this, Cauvery was eager to get herself a similar stature. Brahmma asked her to undertake penance at ThiruCherai and invoke Vishnu’s blessings as he was the only one who could provide her with a solution.

Cauvery requested the Lord to stay at Thirucherai in the same form and he accepted her wish. Also, she wanted to achieve the status of the "sacred water". After more than 1000 years of thapus, Lord appeared before Goddess Kaveri and blessed her with following:

1. She will be equal to ganga in southern part of vindya.
2. He will stay at this Kshethram for ever and bless all those who visit this place.

General Information:

Mudikondan river flows from the west and Kudamuruti river in the south.

Lord Hanuman (or) Aanchaneya blesses as from the west end of the pushkarani and Lord Vianayaka from the North eastern side.

The Rajagopuram is 120 feet tall and adjoining this is the first praharam and then is the Middle Gopuram. Next is the Thirukalyana Mandapam. From here Rajagopala swamy blesses us. In front of this sannathi Thiruvenkatamudayam sannathi is situated. After this Lord Sri Rama, Narashimar and Manavala Maamunigal sannathis are there.

Inside the Moolaver’s Karbagraham, Saranathar along with his wives: Sridevi, Boomidevi, Neela devi, Mahalakshmi and Sara Naayagi gives away his heartfelt blessings.

To his right Markanteya Maharishi and River Cauvery are found. Santhana Gopalan and Selvar are too found in this sannadhi.

River Cauvery is seen in a maternal posture with a child on her lap.[SUP]

[/SUP]

Lord Sri Rama gives us a very special dharshan here. Along with Devi Sita and Lakshmana, all Alwars and Sri Rama’s kolam (i.e.) he poses as he was found in the forest for 14 years.

Festivals: Six worship services are offered each day here. The grand chariot festival happens on Taippoosam, in the Tamil month of Thai, when Saranathan is taken in procession in a chariot with Sree Devi, Bhu Devi, Neelaa Devi, Mahalakshmi and Saaranayaki in commemoration of the stala puraanam.

It is believed that the legend occured when the planet Jupiter was positioned in the Pushya asterism. Once in 12 years when Jupiter transits through the zodiac sign of cancer in the Pushya asterism, the chariot festival on Thaippoosam is considered to be of great significance and is said to be on par with the Mahaamagam festival in

Divya Desam 16-Nathan Kovil or Thiru Nandipura Vinnagaram Temple

Divya Desam 16-Nathan Kovil or Thiru Nandipura Vinnagaram Temple

nathan+koil.jpg

The Temple

This Divya Desam is located about 5kms South West of Kumbakonam and about 3 kms East of Pateeswaram near Korukkai, in a villag.

Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD.
It is also said that this temple was constructed by the famous King Nandhi varma.

It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Srinivasan and his consort Lakshmi as Shenbagavall

The temple has a 3-tier gateway tower, the rajagopuram.

The main sanctum houses the image of the presiding deity, Srinivasa Perumal, the metal image of the festival deity, Jagannatha, the images of Bhoodevi and Sridevi on either sides of Srinivasa.

The image of Nandi, which is otherwise part of Shiva temples, is present in the main sanctum. There is a separate shrine for Shenbagavalli Thayar. The rectangular walls around the temple enclose all the shrines and some of seven water bodies associated with the temple.

General Information

The temple is maintained and administered by the Vanamamalai Mutt

Deity : Srinivasan West Facing Sitting Posture
Goddess : Shenbaga Valli Thaayar
Utsavar : Jagannathan

Pushkarani:

Vimanam:

Mangalasasanam:ThiruMangai Azhvaar – 10 Paasurams( 1438-47)
Sthala Puranam:

STHALA PURANAM

As all know, Nandi (ox) is the Vaghanam (carrier) of Lord Shiva. He is one of an extordinary example for pure love and devotion to god. He has proved that neither good appearence nor sweet voice is needed to reach god. Only pure and simple devotion would bring god near you.

He was the one who explained the greatness of Lord Shiva to Lord Vishnu. Once this Nandi performed Tapas (penance) seeking Lord Vishnu blessing and because of this, the place is known as "Nandipura Vinnagaram".

Nandhan means "Teacher" or "Guide". As Lord Narayana guided at this place, he is called as "Nadhanadha".

The great King Sibhi was a gret donar. Once, Lord Indra took a form of a hunter and Lord Agni transformed himself as a piegon.

The piegon saught Sibhi's help and to help the poor bird, he came forward to give his own flesh equal to the piegons weight to the hunter. So, he sat in the wert plate of the Balance while the piegon in the east. So, to see this beautiful scene, Lord Narayana faces west in this temple. Then he blessed eternity to King Sibhi.

Another story goes that Vishnu, who originally faced the east, turned westward to look at the spectacle of King Sibi saving a bird by providing flesh from his thighs.

As this palce is like puri Jaganath temple of North Inda, it is called as Dakshina Jaganatham ((ie) south Jaganatham).

As Nandhi made penance here, the pushkarani (or) tank of this place is called as Nandi theertha Pushkarani.

There's a historical note that Lord Vinayaka was seen in the tree "Mandara".
As the Vimaanam of this place is Mandara Vimaanam, this place indicates a note of unity among all castes.

At a distance of about 1 1/2 miles away from this place in the river side there is a garden named "Nandivanam" and inside it is a very old temple in a demolished stage.

Festivals and religious practices

The temple priests perform the pooja (rituals) during festivals and on a daily basis. As at other Vishnu temples of Tamil Nadu, the priests belong to the Vaishnavaite community, a Brahmin sub-caste. The temple rituals are performed six times a day: Ushathkalam at 7 a.m., Kalasanthi at 8:00 a.m., Uchikalam at 12:00 p.m., Sayarakshai at 6:00 p.m., Irandamkalam at 7:00 p.m. and Ardha Jamam at 10:00 p.m. Each ritual has three steps: alangaram (decoration), neivethanam (food offering) and deepa aradanai (waving of lamps) for both Srinivasan and Shenbagavalli. During the last step of worship, nagaswaram (pipe instrument) and tavil (percussion instrument) are played, religious instructions in the Vedas (sacred text) are recited by priests, and worshippers prostrate themselves in front of the temple mast. There are weekly, monthly and fortnightly rituals performed in the temple. Pavitrotsavam is a festival organised in the temple by Karimaran Kalai Kappagam of Triplicane, Chennai, every July. The festive images of the deity are taken out in procession and special poojas are performed during the occasion

Prayer

The temple is frequented by people seeking timely wedding, reunion of married couples, children, court verdicts and cure from neural issues.
It is the belief that fights between husband and wife will be solved if one visits this divya desam on the Ashtami day.

The Temple

The temple is believed to have been built by the Medieval Cholas, with later expansions from Vijayanagar kings. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all the shrines and two bodies of water. There is a four-tiered rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower, in the temple.

Legend

As per Hindu legend, the temple was called Brahma Putram in Krita Yuga, Parasaram in Tretha Yuga, Sainthiranagaram in Dwapara Yuga and Bhargavapuram in Kali Yuga. The temple is associated with Trivikrama avatar of Vishnu. As per the legend, Sukrachariyar, the demon guru, was against king Mahabali donating land to Vishnu in the form of a Brahmin. He took the form of the insect and shut the tube of the jug used by the king to spill water during the donation. Vishnu identified the trick and injured the eyes of the insect with a small spear. Sukracharyar, who lost his eyes, did penance at this place to attain the lost eye. It is the believed the light he attained is still glowing at the temple as a lamp called Nethra Deepam.[SUP]

[/SUP]

Once the architects of Devaloga, Viswakarma and Mayan had an argument on whose skill was superior. Brahma, the god of creation informed Mayan that Viswakarma attained betterment as he built Vaikunta, the abode of Vishnu on account of accomplishments in previous birth. He also informed Mayan that to attain similar status, he has to identify and build an abode near river Kaveri similar to Vaikunta. Mayan inspected various places and finally identified Thiruvelliyangudi, where sage Markendeya was doing penance. He built a beautiful temple and its compound, which is believed to be the temple in modern times. Vishnu appeared as Sringara Sundaran (beautiful deity).

Another legend says Mayan, the sculptor of the Deva Loga constructed many beautiful places and wanted to have a heartiful Dharsan of Sri Ramar. He requested Sri Ramar to give darshan without his Sangu and Chakaram. He appeared as "Kola Vallvill Ramar" at this place without Sangu and Chakram.

Velli refers to planet (Venus) and gudi refers to place. Venus is believed to have worshipped the God here and the name of the place is derived from it

As per Hindu legend, Sukra (Venus) and sage Parasara worshiped Vishnu at this temple.

Religious Significance

The temple is counted as Vaishnava Sukra Kshetra as Vishnu appeared as a beautiful deity. The place derived its name Thiruvelliyangudi hence and the presiding deity is also referred to as Velliyan. It is believed that Vishnu appeared in Kalyana Kolam (marriage posture) to Parasarar, Markendeyar, Mayan, Brahma, Sukran and Bhudevi. Just to ease Vishnu, Garuda, the eagle vahana of Vishnu, gave the conch and wheel of Vishnu is a rising posture. This is the only temple where Garuda is depicted in such a posture. Sage Parasa is believed to have done penance in this temple and hence there is a temple tank called Parasara Theertham. A banana plant is seen growing from a granite base and it is believed to be historical.

Sri Bhaktavatsala Perumal temple, Tirukannamangai – 610 104, Tiruvarur district

The Temple

General Information

The temple has a 5-tier rajagopuram and a vast temple complex. The prime deity, Bhaktavatsalar has an imposing image. The temple tank is situated right opposite to the temple.

This shrine is also referred to as Saptamrita Kshetram(seven celebrated elements of nature), referring to seven of its elements such as Vimanam, Mandapam, aaranyam, theertham, kshetram, river and town.

Sthalapuranam:

The presiding deity of this temple is Bhaktavatsala perumal in standing posture and thayar is known as Abhisekhavalli thayar. The temple is among the pancha Krishnaraya kshetrams- the others being Therazhandur, Thirukannapuram, Thirukanankudi, Thirukannamangai and Thiru kapisthalam.
This place is also called as “Sapthamirtha Kshetram”.

Mahalakshmi’s incarnation took place during the churning of parkadal. The Lord gave away the elephant, horse the parijatha flower that all appeared with her, to the Devas. At the beauty of Mahalakshmi,he kept here with himself. Hence she got . She got the name “Maa”. She was called “Shree”, since she had no other thought but Shriman Narayanan. The name “Rama” was given to Lord because the Lord Pleased with her penance, here the Lord came in the Utpalavathaka vimanam to western bank of the Dharsana Pushakarani.

Here he sent a message through Vishvaksenar to the Goddess, that he is on the west bank . lakshmi, overjoyed at the elegant message. As per the ordained proper rituals ,the marriage took place in the presence of Rishis, Devas, Gandharvas and Kinnaras. The Devas, with the water of Dharsana Pushkarani, ordained Her as the chief consort of the Lord. Hence She was given the name Abhisekavalli. The Lord too got the name Bhakthavatsalan because of his ‘Vatsalyam’ to his love towards Goddess.

Namathraya mantra japam is especial in this ‘mantra sidhhi Kshetram’ Varuna who can give immense happiness was able to retrieve his ‘Pasayudham’ which was seized by ravana, after performing penance here.

Markandeyar performed penance here and got the boon to remain a deathless one (chiranjeevi). The sage Romasar, was living and doing penance here. At that time he was requested by Indran to go and meet the pandavas during their aranya vasam. He did so and consoled Dharmaputhrar by narrating the tale of King Nala.

Chandran did a unforgivable mistake by having an illicit association with the wife of Brahspati. As a result, he was affilicted with a severe disease and was hated by the world. Chandran was ashamed and approached Brahma who advised him to take bath in the holy waters of Dharshana Pushkarani and get rid of his curse at Thirukkannamangai.

Brahmi, one of the saptha mathas, and mother of Tilothama wanted a holy dip in Ganges. On search she was advised by Markandeya and sage Romasar that there is no holier place than Krishna Mangala Kshetram and no holier waters than Dharshan Pushkarani. For this they narrated the following anecdote to her. Brahmi came over to ThiruKkannamangai.

Lord Kashi Viswanathar came to Thirukkannamangai ahead of Brahmi, at Dharsana Pushkarani and gave darshan to Brahmi much to her surprise. It is because there exists a proverb “Gangai Adi Mangai Adu”(meaning Bathe in Gange and then bathe in the Thirukkannamangai tank).

There’s a Vanam named “Bhadhrivanam” and it’s mostly like the one found in Naimisaranyam and Bhadhrinath. River Cauvery splits up into two brooks and runs in the North and South side of the temple forming a Garland to the Lord.

On the southern side of this praharam, the swarga vasal is established with a Forty five tier tower. The lord comes through this gateway on Vaikunta Ekadasi day. The lord’s foot impressions are found on a platform to the east of this gateway.

Alongside this gateway, on the northern side we find Desikan sannadhi, Navaneethakrishnan sannadhi, kothandaramar sannadhi and the yaga salai, all facing south. Small figurines of lakshmi, Lord Narashimha and a lady with a stringed instrument are found in a cubicle in the internal wall opposite Desikan sannadhi.

Religious Significance

The temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 7th– to 9th-century Vaishnava canon, by Tirumazhisai Alwar in one hymn. [SUP]
[/SUP]

This temple is one of the Panchakanna (Krishnaranya) Kshetrams. Kannan refers to Krishna, the avatar of Vishnu, while pancha means five and Kshetrams refers to holy places. Four of the five temples are situated in Chola Nadu, in modern times, in the region surrounding Kumbakonam and Nagapattinam and one of them in Nadu Nadu. Krishna is not the presiding deity in any of the temples. The processional deity, Krishna, led to the derivation of the names of these places. There are five similar temples located in North India, called Pancha-dvarakas.[SUP]

[/SUP]Greatness Of Temple:

Besides being one of the celebrated 108 Divya Desas of Lord Vishnu, the temple also qualifies the six criterias of Vimana, Aaranya, Mandap, Theertha Kshetra importance, River, City importance to be called a Saptha Punya Kshetra or Sapthamrutha Kshetra.

All the Devas in the celestial world gathered here to witness and participate in the divine wedding of Lord Vishnu with Mother Mahalakshmi. They wished that this darshan should be available to them for ever. They took the form of honey-bees, built nests and stayed here to realize their wish.

Even today, a honey nest exists on the northern side of Mother’s shrine the antiquity of which is not known to anybody. This is a miracle in this Divya desa. It is believed that a one day stay in the place will bring total salvation to the soul. As Lord rushes to the rescue of His devotees so fast with the speed of Steam-Aavi in Tamil, He is praised as Bhakthar Aavi which later changed as Bhatharavi. Perumal’s Vimana is of Utpala design. It is also believed that the place is protected by Lord Shiva in all four directions in four forms. Though Vishwakseana appears with four hands in Vishnu temples, He appears with only two hands here as he came here to have the audience of Mother Mahalakshmi for Perumal on an occasion.

During Lord Vishnu’s Vamana Avatar, when He raised one of His legs up to the sky, Lord Brahmma worshipped the leg with abishek from the water of His Kamanadala bowl. A drop of this abishek water fell here, now praised as the sacred spring Darshana Pushkarini. When Chandra-Moon was wandering here for relief of a curse, he sighted this Pushkarini, his curse disappearing at once. Lord did the abishek to Mother with this spring water and made Her His consort. Hence, Mother is called Abishekavalli.

Acharya Nadhamunigal, who edited the devotional verses of 12 Alwars under the caption Nalayira Divya Prapandam, had a disciple named Tirukanna Mangai Andan. His mission in life was to serve Lord, clean the temple and place him at Lord’s feet. While he was chanting the Vedas one day, suddenly he took the form of a dog, entered into the sanctum sanctorum and merged with Perumal as a Jyoti. A festival dedicated to him on the Tiruvonam star day in the month of Aani – June-July is devotionally celebrated.

The place is named after him as Tirukanna Mangai

Divya Desam 19-Neelamegha Perumal Temple-Thirukannapuram

gopuram.JPG

About the temple

The temple has a 7-tier rajagopuram and a vast temple complex. The prime deity, Neela Meghar has an imposing image. The temple tank is situated right opposite to the temple. Every year in Markhali (Tamil Month, Equavelent - December), Neelameghu Perumal will go to Visit the Marriage of Venkatesha Perumal of T.R.Patinam- Karaikal

The temple is among the 108 divyadesams of Sri Vaishnavas and comes under Choza naatu divyadesams. The presiding deity is Sri Neelamegha perumal in standing posture and thayar in a seperate sannadhi is called Kannapura nayaki.

The festival idol of the Lord is Sowrirajan perumal.

There is a huge temple tank right outside the temple and an Anjaneya temple besides it.

Sthala Puranam

Purana says King Upasarivasu performed Aswameda yaga and was blessed with a female child, who was named as Padmini. As she grew, she turned out to be a beautiful girl. Padmini meditated in this place to seek the hands of Perumal as her life partner. Sowriraja Perumal was happy with her devoation and dedication. He fulfilled her wish.

Speciality of the Temple

The Lord gives darshan here with Prayoga chakra in hand and the utsavar perumal's hand is like giving posture (Varada hastham). The Lord is said to have shown his walking beauty to Vibeeshana at this place. The temple is among the Pancha Krishnaranya kshetram.

As Tirupati is famous for its ‘laddu’ and Srirangam is famous for ‘payasam’, Thirukannapuram is famous for ‘muniyodharan pongal’. There is a story behind this too. Collecting the tributes and handing it over to the Chola king was the job of Muniyodharar. Once, instead of giving the money to the king, Muniyodharar spent it on some temple work.

This made the king angry and Muniyodharar was imprisoned. His wife was struck with grief and she approached the Lord and said if her husband was not get released within five days, she would jump into the fire and die. The Lord appeared in the king’s dream and ordered him to release Muniyodharar. The king did so. Later, Muniyodhara, when his wife served him ‘pongal’, offered it to God and then ate the delicacy.

The next day, the temple priests were surprised to see pongal rolling down with ghee on the body of the Lord. When they came to know about what had happened and why, they praised and thanked the Lord for his mercy and grace. From that day, it has become a tradition to offer ‘pongal’ to the lord at midnight in this temple.

A king had sent in a garland of flowers for the Lord that didnt reach the temple before the king came in. Scared of the king's anger, the priest made another garland and adorned the Lord with it. When the king came, he saw a hair in the flower garland and asked the bhattar about it. The bhattar immediately told that it was the hair of the Lord and to protect the former from the king's anger, the Lord appeared with long hair the next morning. Hence he is also known as Sowrirajan.

Souri mean Yugas, and Souri Raja means the Lord who takes Avatar in each Yuga. In this place the God appears in three forms at the time of Bhrahmotsavam at the time of Vaikasi (May-June). For seven days He appears as the protecting deity, Sri Maha Vishnu, in the middle of the night for about four hours in the form of Brahma (God of Creation) and in the early morning hours as Rudra (God of Destruction) the Sri Samharamurthy.

Once, Vibhishana prayed to Lord Perumal, that he has seen the Lord in a lying posture in Sri Rangam, and wanted to see him in the standing posture. So the Lord gave darshan to him in a standing posture here.

Seven other important features are Place, Sky, River, Sea, City, Theertham (Tank) and Vunanam, all found in this single place and it is believed that by having darshan here, one can obtain the Prasadham of 'Asthta Stothra Mandram': eight letters Mandiram.

The place is also known as "Srimadha shadakshra maha mantra siddhi kshetram". This place is considered as one of Mukthy giving sthalam and known as Keezhai Vedu by Pandits of olden days.

was blessed with Thiru Mantra Upadesam.

Apart from this, one can see a scar on the utsavar’s right brow. The scar is said to be the outcome of Thirukannapurathu Araiyar’s anguish when the temple walls were demolished by foreigners. In a fit of sorrow, he threw the plate and it struck the idol on his brow and fell. This left a scar on the deity, we are told.

This is a unique feature of this Divya Desham.

Religious significance

The temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon, by Tirumazhisai Alwar in one hymn. The temple is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the book.[SUP]

There are five similar temples located in North India, called Pancha-dvarakas. Krishna is not the presiding deity in any of the temples. The processional deity, Krishna, led to the derivation of the names of these places.

The Temple

The temple has a 5-tier rajagopuram and a vast temple complex

The presiding deity is Sri Loganathan perumal (also called Shymalameni perumal) in standing posture and thayar is Loganayaki thayar. The festival idols are called Damodara Narayanan perumal and Aravindavalli thayar. The temple is among the Pancha Krishnaraya kshetrams.

Sthala Puranam:

Long back Vashita Maharishi made an idol of Krishna in Butter. But the butter did not melt due to his pure devotion. For many years he worshipped Lord Krishna made out of butter. The Lord wanted to test him and hence he transformed himself into a small boy (of Yadhava caste or Idai kulam) and started eating the butter idol. When Vashita saw this he lost him temper and started to chase the boy, who was running towards west side, when the boy was crossing a Magizha Maram, other rishi's who were performing penance there caught the boy and tied him up in the tree. Then finally the boy showed him up. Lord Krishna was standing at the boys place.

Thus from the same place where he stood that day, he blesses us as the Lord Dhamodhara and Dhamodhara Narayanan.

So as Lord Krishna was tied here by rishi's this place is known as Thirukannankudi (Kudi means place of stay).

Greatness of the Temple

This place is related to Ramayana and Mahabaratha. In Ramayana, Lord Rama was the diciple of Vashista Maharishi but at this place Lord Krishna takes the post of the teacher and teaches "Gyana" to his student Vashista.

In Mahabharatham, Lord Krishna was tied by Mother Yashoda for the reason of eating butter. For more or less same reason he was tied here by rishi's.

This incident teaches an important lesson also. Though by eating his own image, the Lord Showed that Paramathma can engulf another Paramathma, it can be conqured by Jeevatma easily (ie) the lord is in reach to man if he tries sincerly.

Religious Significance

"Kaya Magizh - Uragapuli - Thola Vazhaku - Oorakinaru - Thirukannankudi". This is the old saying revolving about this place. Now let us see the explanation of the above Tamil saying.

Kaya Magizh
:

As said earlier Maharishi's who were on penance tied Lord Krishna in a Magizha tree. This tree lives even today behind the temple and it's being said that this tree would never die. Also Utsavar Dhamodara Narayanan lies as though tied to the tree with a rope. Kaya means never to die. So this explains Kaya Magizh.

Urangapuli
:

Namalwar was in Athma Samathi state without sleepign under a Tamarind tree. Thirumangai alwar after completing the compound wall of Sri Rangam asked Namalwar to perform Thiruvaimozhi Utsavam. In a way Dhamodhara perumal helped Thirumangai Alwar to complete his job and can seek Namalwar for his discourse regd. Thiruvaimozhi. Here the term Uranga puli refers to Namalwar.

TholaVazhaku
:

Thirumangai alwar wanted to construct a compound wall to SriRangam temple. But money shortage occured and to avod that he started to steal.

In course, when he came to Nagapatinam, he found a Golden statue of Lord Budha there and tried to steal it. But a wheel was totating above the Budha idol and connectin's to the wheel was in the statue. So without stoping the wheel it was impossible to rob the idol. So, Thirumangai Mannan went across the sea to find the person who made this arrangement. He found him and learnt the technique to stop the wheel at retuned back in a ship which contained beetalnut. After getting of the ship, Alwar filed a suit at the local court and won half the sacks of beetalnuts contained in the ship.

After that by inserting a banana tree bark, he stopped the wheel and stole the golden idol. But the monks saw him and started to chase him. He did the idol at Thirukannankudi near a bush and later took it to SriRangam. When the monks asked to return the idol he said that after two days he would return the idol upto the little finger and gave them just that finger alone monks filed a case and due to his clever wordings Thirumangai Alwar came out this case too.

As he got victory in both the cases, the cases were called "Thola Vazhaku" (ie) case without defeat.

Oorakinaru
:

Vaanamaamalai kshetram has been Mangalasaasanamed by Nammalwar. In this particular kshetram there's a well which contains no water but oil. This oil has medical values and when taken cures many diseases. As devotion would cure Athma's diesease the oil of this well cures bodily included in the saying.

As Dhamodhara perumal guarded the golded idol of Buddha, Thirumangai Alwar was able to finish the wall and invite Nammalwar for discourse. So Thirukannankudi has played an indirect role in the above aspects and thus the saying is explained.

At kannankudi, Lord Shows him off as Purijaganatha purushotama Loga naayakan and Dhamodhara Naarayanan. Loga Naayagan means the king of the world. So here he poses as king and as Dhamodharan Narayana he tells that even king of the world isnt powerful before pure and love and devotion.

Hence this place remainds Thirukannankudi, Thirupullam boothamkudi, Ayodhya, Puri, SriRangam, Alwar thirunagari and Vaanamaamalai.

Details of Prathyaksham:

Brighu Maharishi is the son of Bhrama. In this way he is a grandson to the Lord god.

The same Brighu Maharishi was born as Hemarishi and gave his daughter Komalavalli to god as his wife. In this way he is father-in-law to the god.

So, for this Brighu and his father Bhrama. the Lord Dhamodharan showed his truth self.
Uparisaravasu, was the king of Sethi Kingdom. He was very diciplined and lived one man - one wife life. Due to his good conduct he got pushpaka vimana from Lord Indra and was able to fly in it in the sky. Throght his life he was staunch in his one man - one wife belief.

On the otherside Gowthama Maharishi spelled his wife for her bad conduct.

Thus for both these good persons Dhamodhara Perumal gave special dharsan.
To refrain us from the wrong path, the pushkarani is named after the evil demon Raavana.
The above two things shows that good and evil never goes unnoticed by the god.

Importance/Significance

The temple holds a high significance among the Vasihnavites for the reason that it is a part of the 108 Divya Desams of Lord Vishnu. Apart from this, the temple also forms a part of the Panchakanna Kshetrams-a holy place for Lord Krishna. Krishna is believed to be an avatar of Lord Vishnu and hence the importance of the temple.

It is believed that if one observes penance in this temple and worship the lord, one can easily get rid of all the negative energies of life.

All the more, puja’s and rituals done on special occasions such as Thursdays or Janmashtmi are considered to be more auspicious. People often visit this temple to seek blessings for their children There are certain unique features of this temple which set it apart from the rest of the Divyadeshams.

The presiding deity Loganatha is seen here in an imposing image. Further, the Garuda which is usually present in all the shrines of Lord Vishnu, is usually seen with his hands folded, worshipping the lord. However, this is the only temple where the hands of the Garuda are around his body and not in a folded manner. The architecture of the temple encompasses 5 tier gopurams which stands as a signature symbol unique to this temple

Utsavam:

On every Masi Magam, the lord god of this place goes to the seashore and blesses all his devotees there.

Sthala Viruksham - Magizha Maram (Vagulam).

Moolavar:

The Moolavar of this kshetram is Sri Loganathan. Also named as Shayamala Meni perumal. The Moolavar is giving his seva in the standing posture facing east. Prathyaksham for Bhrigu Maharishi, Brahma devan, Uparisaravasu, Gowtha Marishi, Thirumangai Alwar.

It is interesting to note that the moolavar and festival deity of thayar look alike.

Thayaar:

The Thayaar found in this sthalam is Sri Loganaayaki. The Utsavar Thayaar is Sri Aravinda valli.

Utsavar:

The Utsavar of this sthalam is Damodhara Narayanan.

Divya Desam 21-Soundararajaperumal Temple, Nagapattinam

General Information

Moolavar: Neelamega perumal, Soundararaja Perumal
Urchavar:
Amman / Thayar:
Sthala Virutcham (Tree):
Theertham(Holy water):
Agamam / Poojas:
Built in year: 1000-2000 years old

The temple faces the east and at the entrance of the temple, there is a four pillared open hall. The temple has a magnificently carved 90 ft. (27 m) tall rajagopuram (temple tower) and is enclosed by rectangular walls around it. There is a smaller temple tower on the western side. General Jagul Nayakar, the lieutenant of the Nayak king during the 1650s was a staunch devotee of Soundararaja Perumal. He is believed to have built the temple tower, halls and the compound wall around the temple. The image of him and his wife Lakshmi Ammal are installed in one of the halls built by them.

The walls of the temple are surrounded by large streets called mada vedhi or the streets where the servants of the Lord only are allowed to reside on. It is on this street that the temple chariot passes during festivals. The southern street accommodates the station of the temple chariot and Sarapushkarani, the temple tank.

The consort of the Lord here is called Soundaravalli Thayar, or the eternal mother of matchless beauty. There is a four-pillared mantapa with Deepalakshmis in front of the Soundarvalli shrine, which has beautiful stone carvings of gods and goddess. Garuda is seen in a sitting posture in this temple in his usual position near the flag mast. Usually the guard is seen in a standing position but in this temple there is an exception.

There is a very unusual and beautiful Narasimha temple inside the main temple complex here. The Narasimha Deity is seen with eight hands – one blessing Prahlada, another in abhaya mudra (blessing pose) and the others killing the demon Hiranyakashipu. Many lilas from the Mahabharata and Ramayana are depicted here. The hall has the figurine of the architects who designed it. The Nayaka mantapa is built like a chariot with wheels outside it.
There are inscriptions from various ruling empires on the contributions made to the maintenance of the temple. The mantapa at the entrance to the temple has two eight foot sculptures of the guardian deities Sumba and Nikumba.

In the main sanctorum beneath the sundara vimana , we find the matchlessly attractive Soundararaja Perumal with His consorts Sridevi and Bhoodevi. The festival Deity, Nagai Azhagiyar (the beauty of Nagai town) is of remarkable beauty. The Lord can be seen in three different poses here – standing, lying and sitting posture and He is said to have given darshana in each of these three postures to Naga Raja. Here Neelamegha Perumal is in standing posture whereas Govindaraja Perumal is in sitting posture and Ranganatha Perumal is in sleeping posture.

15 Vimanams in the Temple, Ashtabuja Narasimhar as Dushta Nigrahan and Sishta Paripalanan are Unique.

Temple History

The temple has contributions from the Pallavas, Nagars and Cholas during the 8[SUP]th[/SUP], 9[SUP]th[/SUP] and 10th centuries. The Thanjavur Naikars and the Maratha rulers were ardent patrons of the temple and contributed significantly to expanding the temple. During the rule of the Nayaks, Nagapattinam was a busy port and a Dutch territory. The lamp which was lit in the main gopuram was said to be so bright that it acted as a light house for the ships sailing in this region. Kundo Pandithar, an officer in the Nayak kingdom in 1737 is believed to have constructed the Asthana mantapa, shrines of Pachai Varnar, Pavala Vannar, Veetriruntha Perumal, Kidantha Kola Perumal and Vishwaksena.

Legend

Most of the brothers of Adishesha were cruel to others; causing fear to others was their favourite sport. They often disturbed Garuda, the eagle carrier of Vishnu. This caused the perpetual enimity between the eagles and the snakes. Adishesha was very disturbed with the behaviour of his brothers and decided, in frustration, to perform severe penance.

He meditated in different places like Gokarna, Badrinath, Pushkar and the Himalayalas, praying ardently to Lord Brahma. Brahma, satisfied with his penances, granted Shesha a boon. Seeing the determination and unshakable faith of Adishesha, Brahma then asked a favour of Shesha – to go beneath the unstable earth and stabilize it. Shesha agreed and went to the netherworld, and stabilized her with his hood. He is known to support mother earth even today, thus making Patala his perennial residence.

Adishesha then asked for salvation. Brahma replied that the power of granting moksha or salvation is in the hands of the Supreme Lord Vishnu alone. To this end, Brahma asked Adishesha to proceed to Sundararanyam forests and perform severe penance to Vishnu.

Accordingly Adishesha came down to Sundararanyam and performed severe penance to Lord Vishnu. The Supreme Lord appeared before Adishesha and blessed him, granting him a boon. Adishesha expressed his desire to be the bed of Vishnu. The ever merciful Lord immediately agreed to this plea, and decided to lie on the coils of Adishesha. Thus Adishesha began his selfless service to the Lord at all times.

Hence, this place has been named Thirunagai or Nagapattinam (naga means snake). The lord who appeared in the Sundararanyam forest was known as Soundararaja Perumal.

Another legend says:

In Thretha yuga, there was another great devotee who was granted darshana by the Supreme Lord – the illustrious son of Maharaja Utanapada whose name was Dhruva. His story is closely connected with this temple. One day while Uttanapada played with his favourite queen. Suruchi’s son, Dhruva, the older queen’s son, wanted to sit on his father’s lap too. But the cruel Suruchi reprimanded Dhruva and said, “My son is Uttama, the crown prince, and I am the favorite queen of the king. No one has the right to ascend the throne of the king to even sit on his lap, unless they are born of my womb.” Dhruva who was very much hurt by these harsh words, looked to his father who said nothing. Dhruva then ran to his own mother Suniti, trembling with disappointment. Suniti advised her son to worship the Lord with austerities and so the boy went to the forest.

Dhruva was determined to seek his rightful place and performed very severe austerities to achieve this. Noticing the young prince’s resolve, the divine sage Narada appeared before him and tried to discourage him. But Dhruva's fierce determination knew no bounds, and the astonished sage guided him towards his goal by asking him to go to Thirunagai. Narada Muni instructed Dhruva to chant om namo bhagavate vasudevaya. Dhruva started his penance, and went without food and water for six months, his mind fixed on the transcendental name of the Lord. The Lord was very pleased to see the great resolve of the five year old so He appeared before him immediately. But he could not utter a single word to glorify the Lord. He was spell bound by the bewitching beauty of the Supreme Lord.
The Lord touched the boy’s right cheek with His divine conch and the boy poured forth a beautiful poem of praise of the Lord in twelve powerful verses, which together are called Dhruva-stuti. This pastime is said to have taken place in this divya desam, according to the Brahmanda Purana.

Festivals

The temple is a mahakshetra or a big temple and the worship mode is very elaborate and summons special blend of Tamil songs sung by Alwars and the Sanskrit Vedas. The temple rituals are performed six times a day: the first offering to the Deity is made at 7 a.m., the Lord accepts naivedya at 8:00 a.m., the elaborate noon worship with the chanting of the songs of the Alwars is at noon, evening worship begins at 6:00 p.m., another worship to the Lord is performed at 7:00 p.m. and the final worship for the day is at 10:00 p.m, after which the Lord retires to His chambers..

Each ritual has three steps: decorating the Diety with fresh flower garlands, offering various delicacies prepared in the Deity kitchen and maha-arati, for both Soundararajan and Soundaravalli. Many varieties of musical instruments are played, religious instructions in the Vedas (sacred texts) are recited by priests, and worshippers prostrate themselves in front of the temple flag mast. There are weekly, monthly and fortnightly rituals performed in the temple.

During the Tamil month of Chittirai, which marks the beginning of the New Year, the solar calendar is read in the temple premises and the festival Deity is taken in procession around the mada street of the temple. Similar processions are followed during the Maga star of Chittirai and Maga months.

The five day festival of Nammalwar during the Tamil month of Aani is celebrated to commemorate his birth anniversary. The ten – day annual festival of Soundaravalli Thayar is celebrated during the same month when the flag is hoisted and the festival Deity of Thayar is taken in different chariots on the streets around the temple. This is a very rare event as only few temples enjoy independent flag mast for the consort of the Lord and independent festival thereof. This is a rare temple where the consort of the Lord enjoys as much privileges as the Supreme Lord.

During the month of Panguni in the star of Uthiram, Soundararaja Perumal arrives at the shrine of Soundaravalli Thayar and the celestial wedding is celebrated. Garlands are exchanged between the Deities. During the Tamil month of Aadi, to commemorate summer solstice, ten day festival is celebrated in the temple when the festival image of Perumal is taken on the streets around the temple. Then the Lord is brought in the vasantha mantapa where He listens to the works of His pure devotee Thirumangai Alwar .

Krishna Janmashtami is the greatest in the year. Many devotees throng to have a glimpse of the Supreme Lord.

Saturdays of Tamil month Puratassi, Navratri, Vaikuntha Ekadashi and Vijayadashami are celebrated during the respective days. A ten day festival is celebrated during the Tamil month of Purattasi, commemorating Manavala Maamunigal. Musical instruments like shuddamadallam, ekalam, thiruchinnam and thalam are used during such festivals. During Thiruvasi festival, the temple chariot is drawn round the streets of the temple.

The ten day Brahmotsava is the grandest festival in Thirunagai divya desam.

THIRUMANGAI ALWAR

Thirumangai Alwar was so lured by the charm of Lord Soundararajan that he imagined himself a woman (nayaki) to better admire the beauty of the Lord. Thirumangai Alwar in his Periya Thirumozhi verses on Thirunagai temple compares the beauty of Soundararaja Perumal with the Lords of several other divyadesams. He compares the Lord with Lord Aaravamudhan of Thiru Kudanthai, with Lord Sathya Moorthy of Thirumaiyam, with the Lord at Maliruncholai, Uraiyur , Koodal (Madurai) and Thiruneermalai divya desams.

Alwar runs into ecstasy seeing the beauty of the Lord.

As soon as the Alwar entered the temple and saw Him, as a parakala nayaki(female form) sings:

‘Oh! My friend! When I look at His powerful arms, He resembles Indra
When I see His excellent form, He looks like a monarch. When I hear He is like a pious brahmana. When I think of His greatness He is like a deva. In short, I don’t know who He really is’.
Oh! Friend! Didn’t He see You?

I too enjoyed His looking at me. But I am afraid what my mother would feel about it. This splendid beauty of Sundararaja has captured my heart! I eternally will live in Tirunagai enjoying the beauty of the lord!

Prayers

It is believed that two enunchs namely Kandan and Sukandan attained physical fitness after having a holy dip in Sara Pushkarani, the temple tank.

Those who have lost their possessions, and those desirous of restoring broken relationships offer lime fruit garlands to Karthaveeriarjuna lighting ghee lamps. Sri Andal graces on every Thursday in the Mandap here, when devotees perform turmeric abishek for early wedlocks. People believe that they get even foreign suitors if so prayed for.

Lord Varaha played musical instrument thambura.

Thanjai Mamani Koil is a set of three Hindu temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu located in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu, India and are close to each other. It is one of the Divya Desams, the 108 temples of Vishnu revered by the 12 poet saints, or Alwars. Unlike other Divyadesams where a single shrine is referred, this set of temples is referred together in all the paasurams(poems).

The temple is located in the banks of Vennaaru River.

Among the 108 Divyadesam, this is the one and only Divyadesam where three temples are worshipped as one divyadesam. (In Tirunelveli Divyadesam - Nava Tirupatis, Two temples are being worshipped as One Divyadesam, Irettai Tirupati).

Legend

The Lord is believed to have appeared for sage Parasarar

Lord Nrisimha in sitting posture facing East with Thayar Thanjai Nayagi. Both were prathyaksham to Markandeyar.

The Story stares in this way, Once in Kritha Yuga there were three demons Thanjakan, Thandakan and Gajamukhan underwent severe penance praying to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva was pleased at the devotion of the three demons and appeared before them. The demons requested for a boon of immortality to Lord Shiva. Lord Shiva advised them that Lord Vishnu as a Preserver could provide such a boon. However Lord Shiva provided them with a boon that he will do no harm to them.

The three demons were turned out haughty with the extra-ordinary boon provided by Lord Shiva and they started harassing entire deities and Rishis. In the meantime, the entire universe had undergone severe drought and famine. Surprisingly, there was only one sacred land remained undisturbed where Sage Parasara was following severe austerities and propitiating Lord Perumal.

The three demons arrived on this land; they started assaulting Sage Parasara and tried all their arrogant means to vanquish him from this lush green land. Sage Parasara called out for Lord for help.

Instantaneously, Lord Sriman Narayana sent Garuda to kill the army of demons. At last, Lord himself appeared before the demons and beheaded all of them.

Thanjakan regretted about his deeds and begged to pardon him. Thus, the sacred land has got its name Thanjakanur and later years came to known as ‘Thanjavur’. Seeing the defeat of Thanjaka, Thandakan hid himself under the earth. Lord became a Varaha, entered the hiding and killed the demon. Tharaka was killed by Kali. After the destruction of the three demons, Lord appeared before Sage Parasara as Neelamega Perumal. Lord is gracing this place in three names in three separate temples.

Lord Vishnu who destroyed the demons graces in three separate temples as Neelamegar, Manikundra Perumal and Veera Narasimha in three forms. Saints Boodhathazhwar and Tirumangai Azhwar had sung the glory of the three Perumals together in their hymns.

The three temples form a single Divya Desa. Saint Tirumangai Azhwar had sung the Mangalasasanam twice for the temple. Lord Veera Narasimhar blesses the devotees from the sanctum sanctorum along with Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi. Instead of abishek only Thailakappu is done for the three presiding deities.

Outside the Moolavar Sannathi, we can dharsan Lakshmi Narasimar containing godess Lakshmi devi in his right lap, Andal Naachiyar and Vishvakshenar.

Thaayar Senkamalavalli Nachiyar has a seperate sannadhi. Outside the Thaayar sannadhi, there is one pillar in which one side Yoga Narasimar is portraited whereas on the other side Lord Aanchaneya (Hanuman) is found. It is said that if we come around and pray the Narasima and Aanchaneya continuosly for 108 times, all our wishes would be granted immediately.

The Vedas say that Lord Narayana would take any form at any time to protect his devotees. And the above case proves it. As the meaning of Vedas is explained here, the Vimaanam of this place is Vedasundara vimaanam.

The Vimaanam of Thanjai Maamani Koil is beautifully carved and hence gets it name Soundaraja vimaanam. And as the perumal stands as a hill of with a grace on glare of pearls and stones in Manikundra perumal Koil its vimaanam has the Manikooda vimaanam.

Legend

There are several legends in the Puranas linked with this place. According to one of them, Uparisiravasu (some scholars give the king's name as Oordhvarathan) obtained powers, after long years of penance, to fly from place to place in his "Ratha." While he was flying over this place where sage Agasthya was doing penance, it came down and fell into a water source. As the "Ratha" (thaer in Tamil) got stuck here, the place came to be known as "Therazhundur."

Another legend says that King Uparisiravasu, who was flying over all places in his vehicle, once gave the verdict in favour of the celestials in a dispute between them and sages. The angry sages cursed that his vehicle would not move any further. As the incident took place here it got the name of Therazhundur.

A third legend about this place is linked to the same king, Uparisiravasu, who while flying in his vehicle over this place along with his queen, did not heed her plea to get down and offer obeisance to the Lord enshrined in the temple.

The Lord instructed Garuda to bring down the vehicle and it fell into the holy water source in front of the temple. As the incident happened on an Amavasya day the tank got the name of "Darsa (Amavasya) Pushkarani" and bathing in it on Amavasya day is said to confer many benefits on devotees.

The Temple

Sthalasayana Perumal Temple (also called Arulmaakadal Perumal Temple) is a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu located near Kollumangudi, Tamil Nadu, India. It is located 2 km away from Kollumangudi, 40 km away from Kumbakonam and 10 km from Karaikal. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Sthalasayana Perumal and his consort Lakshmi as Thirumagal Nachiyar. A granite wall surrounds the temple, enclosing all the shrines. There is a four-tiered rajagopuram, the temple's gateway tower, in the temple.

Sthalasayana Perumal is believed to have appeared to sage Vyakara Patha. Three daily rituals and three yearly festivals are held at the temple, of which the Brahmotsavam festival, celebrated during the Tamil month of Vaikasi (May-June), being the most prominent. The temple is maintained and administered by the Hindu Religious and Endowment Board of the Government of Tamil Nadu.

Legend

Shiva ordered Sage Vyaghrapada to perform penance at Srirangam requesting Vishnu to give him place in Vaikunta. Vyaghrapada was joined by Sage Patanjali in his journey. Because of his poor eyesight, the sages instead went southward, lost their way and reached KrupaSamudram (current Sirupuliyur). They prayed to Vishnu to come to Srirangam to grant them moksha(divine attainment).

It is believed that Vishnu originally gave darshan (appeared) to the sages as Ranganatha, the form worshipped in the Srirangam temple. Because of their old age, the sages could not see the big image of the Lord clearly and hence the Lord appeared in a smaller form known as Bala Sayanam (smaller recline), a small kid in sleeping posture.

Being the Lord in small form and the saint who worshipped was in the form of a tiger, this place is called Siru(small) Puli(Tiger)yur(Living place).

It is believed that the deity of this place gave protection to the snake Shesha from his enemy Garuda (eagle).

Garuda does not fly over this place-

Fight between Garuda and Adhiseshan

Once Garuda(the Vechile of the Lord) and Adiseshan(on whom rests the Lord) got into an argument as to who was more powerful and devoted to the Lord. Seeing Garuda a little arrogant, Lord Vishnu went in favour of the Serpant God. Worried that Garuda might be angered at this, Adiseshan seeks Lord’s protection, upon which Lord asks him to roll himself and lie under him. It is said that as a result of this anger, Garuda never flies over this place.

There is another story that that Adiseshan won the argument and since snakes were sworn enemies of garuda, Adiseshan hid himself under the waters of the temple tank. There is since been a temple for Adisesha.

A separate shrine for Sri Adhiseshan is present near to the pushkarani - known as Ananthalwar Temple.
It is said that one will be relieved of Naaga Dosham if one visits this place. Unmarried people and childless couple can also visit this temple for solution.

Greatness Of Temple:

Of the 108 Divya Desa Tirupathis of Lord Perumal, only Sri Rangam and the Tiruchirupuliyur being the 11th in the line temple are facing south. Perumal graces in a full long form in Sri Rangam. He appears as a little boy reclining in this temple. Sages Vyakrapada and Patanjali, devotees of Lord Nataraja are in the very sanctum sanctorum with Perumal here. It is said that sage Vyakrapada prayed to Lord Nataraja (Shiva) for years seeking salvation. He was advised by Lord Shiva to go to this place and pray to Perumal to realize his wish. Lord Perumal granted salvation to the sage with a place in His sanctum itself.

It is noteworthy that Shiva devotee Sage Patanjali (Adisesah) and Vyakrapada are with Perumal in the sanctum. Sage Kanva also had darshan of Lord in this place. There is a separate temple for Adisesha also here. As sage Vyakarapada-Pulikkal Munivar in Tamil-worshipped here and as Perumal granted darshan as a Balaka-little boy, the place is named Tiruchirupuliyur.

Speciality of the Temple

A special feature of this temple is that this is one of the only two Divya Desams where the Lord in Sayana Kolam (sleeping posture) is facing the Southern direction, the other being Lord Ranganatha of Srirangam.

Mangalasasanam(Divine Verses)

Saint Tirumangai Alvar has glorified the significance of this lord in ten divine hymns

Temple

Thalaicchanga Nanmathiyam Sengamalavalli Samedha Nanmadhiya Perumal Temple - Where ALMIGHT Hold the Precious Conch.

Thalaicchanga Nanmadhiyam Divyadesam - Moolavar is Sree Naanmadhiya Perumal and thayar is being worshipped as Thalaisanga Nachiyar. Utsava Murthy is blessing as Vyomajoyipiraan and Utsava Thayar is Sengamalavalli Nachiyar. The statue of Sree Andal here in Thalaisanga Nanmathiyam Temple is very mesmerizing eventhough she is small and the Shell in the Lord's hand is believed to be very precious. Hence the place and the temple is being worshipped as Thalaicchangu. Changu means the Conch. Nanmadhiya Perumal is blessing with HIS consorts Sreedevi and Bhoodevi with one of HIS Arms on HIS Hip. Sree Andal can be worshipped very beautiful here . Thirumangai Alwar compared the Face of the ALMIGHTY with Cool Moon Light. When Devas and the demons churned the milk ocean to obtain the Nectar, Chandran appeared well before Sree Mahalakshmi, hence he enjoys the status as Her Elder brother. He occupies the second place next to Sun in the planetary system. Another Legend is that he was born to Sage Athiri and his wife Anusuya. Moon is handsome and is the disciple of Jupiter and well versed in Scriptures.

The Legend - Once Jupiter - Guru Bhagwan conducted a Yagna called Raja Suya which was participated by a huge number of Rishis and Sages including Thara, wife of Jupiter. When Chandhran and Thara looked at each other during the event of Yagna, they began to love. Thara left Jupiter and started her life with Chandran. Shocked Deva Guru Jupiter cursed his disciple with leprosy and also reported this issue to Lord Maha Vishnu. Meantime, a son was born to Chandhran and Thara named Bhudhan ( A planet called as Mercury ). As advised by Lord Vishnu, Chandhran returned Thara to Jupiter and apologised for his mistake. Knowing everything Budhan hated his father for his misdeed. He performed a penance and became one of the Navagraha Planets

Chandhran Ccommitted His Next Mistake. He married the 27 daughters of Dakshan promising him that he would treat each one with equal love and affection. But he did not. He was very fond of Rohini alone and ignored others. The aggrieved daughters approached their father, Dhakshan and narrated their condition. Angry Dhakshan cursed Moon that his handsome face will depreciate day by day. Full moon began to face the impact of the curse. Chandra had to suffer a double curse. Thalaichanga Naanmadiyam Perumal temple’s legend has close connections with another two other Chozhanadu Divya Desams, the first and foremost of 108 Divyadesams, Srirangam Aranganathaswamy Temple and the nearby Parimala Rangan Temple at Thiru Indhalur.

Chandhran, to purify himself from all his sins, apologised and requested his Guru Brahaspathi to suggest remedy. He was then directed to undergo a Three Phased Parikaram and to appeal for the blessings of Lord Vishnu for his sins. Moon as the first step in the three phased parikaram, undertook bath at the Chandra Pushkarani and performed poojas at Srirangam Ranganathar Temple for so many years. This helped him liberate himself from his Physical Disease. Subsequently, he came down to Thiruindhalur, a Divyadesam in Mayiladuthurai and offered his prayers to the ALMIGHTY Parimala Rangathar. Answering his prayers, HE reduced the severity of his curse and brought back a few of his handsome features. As per Moon’s request, this place in Mayiladuthurai became to be worshipped as Indhunnoor ( A name denoting Chandran - Indhu - Chandhran ) and then later it became Indhalur. Thiru Indhalur Parimala Ranganathar Divyadesam is being worshipped as Chandran Dhosha Parikara Kshetram

Finally as the final phase of his three phased remedy, Chandhran came down to Thalaichangadu Kshetram ( Aruna Vana Kshetram ) had bath in the Pushkarini and underwent a severe penance invoking the blessings of Lord Vishnu who at last appeared here as Nanmadhiya Perumal under Chandra Vimanam along with Shengamalavalli Thaayar and liberated Moon completely from all his sins. Hence the Lord here is also referred as Chandra Saabha Haran. A pleased Chandran requested the ALMIGHTY to fulfill the wishes of devotees who pray sincerely to him at this temple, just as he did and to relieve them from all the curses and Dhoshams

Eventhough committed the mistakes, Chandhran finally surrendered at the feet of Lord Vishnu for the relief and worshipped Perumal at Srirangam, Thiru Indhalur and Thalaichanga Naanmadiyam, have a dip in the Temple Pushkarini there in all the three Divyadesams and to perform penance on HIM for the relief. Chandran meticulously followed his Guru's advice and finally got relieved from all his curses here in Thalaichanga Naanmadiyam, one of the Four Divyadesams located in and around Mayiladuthurai. The ALMIGHTY gave Prathyaksham to him because of his sincere penance and as a result of Moon's sincerity, HE wore Moon as an Ornament on His head. Nanmadhiya Perumal Temple is about 15 KM from Mayiladuthurai on the way to Karaikal.

Divya Desam 26-Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple-Tiruindaloor

Divya Desam 26-Parimala Ranganatha Perumal Temple-Tiruindaloor

Thiruindalur-Sri-Parimala-Ranganatha-Perumal-Temple.jpg

The Temple

The central shrine is of the presiding deity Parimala Ranganathar made of 12 ft (3.7 m) green stone and is seen in a reclining posture facing east. The consort of Parimala Ranganathar is Parimala Ranganayaki, who is also called Chandrasaapa Vimochanavalli and Pudareekavalli. The sanctum also houses the images of river gods Cauvery and Ganga and that of Santhanagopalakrishnan. The Hindu god of creation, Brahma is sculpted on the wall.

The temple has shrines of Yoga Narasimhar, Rama, Anjaneya, Surya and Chandra. This temple has three prakarams (precincts) that houses all the shrines and has a five-tier, east-facing Rajagopuram. The Dwajasthamba Mandapam and Garuda Mandapam have sculpted pillars, with the latter having images of 10 avatars of Vishnu

The history of the temple speaks the greatness of Ekadasi Vrata-fasting, that is the devotee committed to this prayer should spend the whole day only with thoughts of Lord without consuming even a drop of water. King Ambarishan was following this practice meticulously. The devotee should take food only the next day-Dwadasi the 12th day of New Moon or Full moon at an auspicious time. And that was the 100th Ekadasi-Dwadasi for king Ambarisha. People of his country and those in the palace were happy that their king will be completing a century and there were necessary arrangements for the celebrations.

Sthala Puranam:

Indhu means moon. As perumal received Chandra (Moon) from his curse, this place is known as Indhaloor.

Lord Narayana gave dharsan as Vennchudar perumal in the standing posture to the Moon god in Thalaisangaadu. But here at this place he is in Veera Sayanam posture.

There he was full of light being as Vyomajyothi piran. But here he is full of fragrance (Parimalam) and hence he is called as Parimala Rangan. He has 4 hands here.

River Cauvery is under his feet here. As he promised river Cauvery to increase here status, he made her as his bed at Srirangam, took her as his mother at Thirucherai and here at Thiru Indhaloor, he has taken river Cauvery above his head. Thus gave her the status of river Ganges who is on the head of Lord Shiva.

As the perumal of this place, converted the position of river Cauvery and Lord Chandra into a pious state, Thirumangaialwar calls him as a Brahmin.

The vedas were created to instruct rules for human beings to lead a happy life. The Surya and Chandra revolve around the world to give prisperity (like wheels ie Chakra). Hence the vimaana of this place is called as Veda Chakra Vimaanam.

Sri Rangam is known as Aadhi Arangam (first) while Thirukudanthai is Madhiya Arangam (Middle) and Thiru Indhaloor is known as Andiya Arangam (Last).

Argument between Thiru Mangai Azhvaar and Lord Parimala Rangan:-

As per another legend, the azhwar saint Thirumangai Azhwar visited the temple and the doors were locked at the time. He was singing praise of Parimala Ranganathar, but the door still was not open. After continuous singing, he got frustrated at one point and asked Parimala Ranganathar to keep the temple for himself, when the doors were opened.

The story goes that Lord Parimala Rangan shut the door on ThiruMangai Azhvaar, who had come for his darshan, reasoning that he was late. Upset at this, ThiruMangai Azhvaar gets into an argument with Lord Parimala Ranganathar.

When a friend keeps a thing that we want and does not want to share with us, we typically say ‘ keep it to yourself’ in jest. Similarly, here, with the Lord not allowing Thirumangai Azhvaar an entry into the temple, the Azhvaar asked Parimala Rangan to keep all his beauty to himself and to enjoy it on his own.

ThiruMangai Azhvaar goes on to argue that the world will talk about the Lord in bad light as he shut the door on the Azhvaar. The Lord ignores this comment of the Azhvaar saying that he need not worry about it and that he will take care of any ill feelings.

Despite repeated attempts to impress the Lord to allow him an entry, Parimala Rangan maintains his silence. A dejected and frustratedThiru Mangai Azhvaar decided that he would leave the place as the Lord was stubborn at not allowing Darshan to the Azhvaar.

Thiru Mangai Azhvaar in his Paasuram(1331) says ‘Vaasi Valleer Indhalureer Vazhnthey Pomneerey….’ to mean that ‘ I am leaving, you yourself live here and enjoy life’.

Sensing that Thiru Mangai Azhvaar may leave the place without praising him enough, Lord Parimala Rangan tries to prolong the argument and asks him to sing praise of him. Thiru Mangai Azhvaar replies saying “How can I shower praise on you when you do not allow me to see you”. Lord Parimala Ranga says “ You who have sung praises of other Lords, sitting in your place, do sing praise of me too so I can listen to your sweet songs.” ThiruMangai Azhvaar finally falls for it and composes 10 Paasurams.

Moolavar:

The Moolavar of this sthalam is Sri Parimala Ranganathan. Also called as Maru viniya Maindhan, Sugantha Vananathan, and Andhiya Rangan. He is giving his seva in Kidantha (Sleeping) Thirukkolam in Veera Sayanam facing his thirumugham towards east direction. Prathyaksham for Chandiran (Moon god).

Thayaar:

The Thayaar found in this sthalam is Parimala Ranganayaki. Also known as Chandra shaba vimosana valli and Pundarigavalli.

Utsavam:

This temple is in the ceremonious mood throught the tamil month Ipasi. A handicapped devotee came to take bath and gained puniya equivalent to that gained on the Iyppasi month.

“Mudavan Muzhukku”

“Kadaimuga Snaanam” or the “Mudavan Muzhukku” is a great festival celebrated every year at the place where River Cauvery joins with the sea. It is believed that a bath in the Cauvery here during Aipasi is said to be more sacred than bathing at the Ganges. During this month, the temple attracts devotees from across the country.

Chariot Festival during Panguni( March-April) and 30 day Festival during Aipasi are very famous.

The Temple

The temple is located in the holy town of Sirkazhi in Nagapattinam district. Thirumangai Azhvar and Saiva Kuravar Sambandar had a colloquim and the azhwar won the caption. The God in the temple is praised as Man alantha Tadalan meaning the one who measured the land.[SUP]

[/SUP] The name Tadalan is in honour of Tiruvikrama form and the moolavar(prime deity) fixed in the central shrine is in this form. The presiding deity, Tiruvikrama, appeared for sage Ashtakoma.

Temple Specialty

This is one of the five Divya Desams referred by Thirumangai Azhvaar as ‘Vinnagaram’. The others being Parameswara Vinnagaram (Kanchipuram), Arimeya Vinnagara(Thiru Naangur), Vaikunta Vinnagaram (ThiruNaangur) and Nandipura Vinnagaram(Nathan Koil, Kumbakonam). Another feature of Thirumangai’s praise of this Divya Desam is his reference to the Goddess in his Paasurams.

History & Legend:

Lord Trivikrama appears in the sanctum sanctorum with His left leg above His head, showing the right hand as if to receive the Dhan and a finger of the left hand as if asking for the next one foot land promised to him. This is the Trivikrama form of Lord Vishnu. The Vimana above the sanctum is called Pushkala Vimana. Procession deity Thadalan is nearby. He is also praised as Thavittu Panai Thadalan.

Thal in Tamil means Earth or World, Aalan means the ruler. As Lord scaled the world with His Foot, Sri Andal called Him Thadalan. The verses of Sri Andal are pieces of delight with sweet melody of Tamil coupled with their spiritual content. Nearby Andal is Lord Santhana Gopalakrishna. Those seeking child boon pray here.

Glory of Mother: Lord Vishnu’s handsome chest is the abode of Mother Sri Mahalakshmi. In this temple, Mother is holding the Lord on Her chest. As Lord stands here with one leg on the ground, to help Him balancing, Mother is holding the Lord so that He should not feel the pain of standing by one leg. The Kausthuba gem chain on the Lord’s chest is therefore on that of Mother, a rare darshan. Women pray here to earn the love of their husbands. The darshan also brings re-union among couples separated. Procession Mother is hiding the main mother leaving only Her face for the devotees who is holding Her Lord. Swing festival is conducted on each Friday in the shrine.

Sirkali has the special reputation of being the birth place of Saivite Saint Tirugnanasambandar.

There was a time when the temple was left without proper care. During those days an old women kept the procession deity Thadalan hidden in a husk pot-Thavittu Panai in Tamil, performed pujas and was worshipping Him. Saint Tirumangai Azhwar came to this place along with his disciples singing the glory of Lord. People there requested them to pass without making noise. But they refused and continued singing. War of words began. It was decided to have a debate the next day between Sambandar and Azhwar. Lord appeared in the dream of Azhwar and asked him to get Thadalan from the old woman, pray to Him and go for the debate.

Sambandar asked Tirumangai Azhwar to say a Kural. Kural in Tamil means a dwarf. Lord came to Mahabali as a Kural and became Trivikrama then. Having this theme, Azhwar began his song with the word Kural and sang 10 verses describing the ten incarnations of Lord Vishnu. Sambandar was very happy and rewarded Azhwar his Vel and also an anklet.

Tirumangai Azhwar restored the temple to its original glory then. He sang in praise of Lord, Mother and Thadalan and Sage Romesa who was instrumental to make the presence of Lord Trivikrama in this temple with his Mangalasasanam.

Lord Brahmma the creator grew proud of his boon of longevity spanning many Yugas. Lord Vishnu decided to teach him a lesson. Sage Romesa performed penance here for the darshan of Lord Vamana-Trivikrama form scaling the whole world with one Foot up. Granting his wish, Lord told the sage that he would live longer than Brahmma whose longevity would be reduced by a year if and when one hair fell from his body. Brahmma understood that Lord has indirectly taught him a lesson and shed his pride. Thus Lord graced this place with His Trivikrama form.

Divya Desam 28-Gopala Krishna Perumal-Thirukkavalambadi- Seergazhi

Thiru-Kavalampaadi-Temple.jpg

About the Temple & Location:
This temple lies in the Tanjore district of Tamil Nadu. It's about 7 miles east from Seerkazhi and 5 miles away from the Vaihteeswaran Kovil railway station. Bus facilities are provided but staying facility are not provided.

The temple has a small shrine with Vimanam. The shrine houses the granite image of Gopalakrishna and the his consorts Rukmini and Sathya Bhama on either sides.

Sthala Puranam:

Here Lord Gopala Krishnan give dharsan along with his wives Rukmani and Satyabhama.

Vishwaksenar the chief of the Nithyasuri's was the son of Kundalai and Lord Varuna (Rain god). Kundalai was sent to disturb the penance of Saint Dhuruvasa by Lord Indra was gained his curse. So, she was born as a hunter's daughter and married pathiran a hunter. One day Lord Varuna loved her and as a result she bore Vishwaksenar as her child.

Later by his hard penance he was made the chief of Nithyasuri's the good spirit's who live in Pramapatha and who are always near Lord Narayana.

He wished to have dharsan of Lord Narayana as Lord Krishna and fulfilled his wish here.

Rudran was caught by Brahma Hathi dhosam, an evil spell as he killed Lord Brahma. To over come this he prayed the Lord at Kadamba kshetram, Kantiyur and here at this place got rid of his problem.

To gain the love of god, its enough if we do our duties correctly. Vishwaksenar and Rudran both were fully satisfied before having dharsan of this Lord and did not requested him anything. So Lord gave his blessing happily as he had said in Bhagavat git that if you do your duties without expecting anything from me, I would give all the necessary for you without your request.

Reason behind the name
:

This Kshetram in tirunAngUr area is called tirukkAvaLambADi (திருக்காவளம்பாடி). KAvaLam means orchard. This kshEtram was once a huge orchard and hence got the name KAvaLam (orchard) pADi (village).

(Periya tirumozhi - 4.6.8)

KAvaLam in the second line above refers to the garden in indralOkam, according to legend, which was destroyed by Lord Sri Krishna to punish Indra. He then brought pArijAta tree to DwAraka to grant the request of SatyabhAmA. Third line in the above pAsuram indicates that Indra chose this KAvaLam pADi to honour Sri Krishna for killing narakAsuran and restoring Indra's pride, prestige and wealth.

Another legend stated is, Here the Lord accepts the pure state of his devotees as food and so this place is called Kavalampadi. So, there is no Madapalli (Kitchen - a place to cook food for the lord here at this temple).

Specials:

1. On every day next ot Thai Amavasai (New moon day in the Tamil Month Thai), the perumal of this temple is taken in the Garuda Vahanam to join the Thirunaangur Garuda sevai.
2. It is First and one among the Thirunaangur Thirupathi's.

Moolavar:

The Moolavar of this Divyadesam is Sri Gopala Krishnan. Also known as Rajagopalan. He is giving his seva Nindra (Standing) Thirukkolam facing his thirumugham towards east direction. Prathyaksham for Vishwaksenar (Senai Thalaivar) and Rudran.

The Temple

Thiruarimeya Vinnagaram or Kudamudakoothan Perumal Temple is dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu located in Thirunangur, a village in the outskirts of Sirkazhi in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Kudamudakoothan and his consort Lakshmi as Amirtagadavalli.

The temple has a 3-tier gopuram. It is surrounded by paddy fields and is located in Thirunangur, a small village, 10 km away from Sirkali en route to Thiruvenkadu. The temple tank is located north of the temple. Sage Uthankar is believed to have worshiped the presiding deity of the temple.[SUP]

[/SUP]The central shrine houses the image of Krishna seated with his legs on a pot. Thirumangai Azhwar refers this action and calls the deity "Kudamadukoothar", meaning "Oh, pot dancer".[SUP]

[/SUP]The vimana of the temple is called Vedamodha Vimanam

It is one among the eleven divyadesams of Thirunangur Tirupathis and is closely associated with Thirumangai Alvar.

Legend

Thiru Arimeya Vinnagaram Thirukudamadokoothan Temple where the ALMIGHT blessing the Happiness to the devotees who surrender themselves to HIM. Moolavar is blessing in HIS Sitting Posture with HIS one Leg placed on a butter pot. Pot means Kudam in Tamil. Being ALMIGHTY seems to be dancing on a pot he is being worshipped as Kudam-Adum-Koothan. Koothan means Dancer. Thirumangai Azhwar praising this Divyadesam as Arimeya Vinnagarm. Sage was asking about the Gowravas and Pandavas without knowing what happened. Lord Krishna explained sage about what happened in the battle.

Utthangar got furious and told Krishna that what he had done was not fair. Even though Lord Krishna explained him that all were happened only according to the Fate which can be the only winner ever. Utthangar was not satisfied. Lord Krishna gave the sage HIS Viswaroopa Darshan and the sage became calm and asked for a boon that whenever he needs water he should get it as getting water is very hectic there. Lord Krishna gave him the boon. Few days later, sage felt very thirsty and thought of the ALMIGHTY. Suddenly he saw a person with few dogs and a a pot said he has water and whether he needs it. The Sage by judging him with the appearance rejected his offer. Immediately the man vanished. Lord Krishna gave prathyaksham to Uthangar and said that the person cam was Indhiran and he was having nectar in his pot. The fate is that no human beings are eligible to have nectar. That’s why even though sage got a chance he was not able to drink. Thus Fate is the winner always. Lord Krishnan told him the sage that nothing was done by him on the battele and The Fate only led the war. It was only made Dhuriodhanan more arrogant and mercyless and nothing was done byThe Sage accepted and apologized Paranthaman. Since when Indran came here with the Nectar, few drops fell down here in Arimeya Vinnagaram, the temple tank is being worshipped as "Amrudha Theertham".

Divya Desam 30-Thiru Vanpurushothamam or Purushotama Perumal Temple

G_T7_514.jpg

The Temple

The temple has a small shrine with Vimanam and only one sanctum.

Thiru Vanpurushothamam or Purushotama Perumal Temple is dedicated to Hindu god Vishnu located in Thirunangur, a village in the outskirts of Tiruchirappalli in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Purushottaman and his consort Lakshmi as Purushottamavalli.

General Information:

Accompanied by Mothers Sridevi and Bhoodevi, Lord Purushothaman appears in a standing posture facing east. Mother Purushothama Nayaki blesses devotees from Her own shrine in the southwest side of the temple in a sitting position. Shrines of Sri Andal, Lord Rama with Mother Sita and Sri Lakshmana, Sri Anjaneya, Nammazhwar, Udayavar Sri Ramanuja, Senai Mudaliar are in the inner prakara. The vimana above the presiding deity is of Sanjeevi Vigraha Vimana design. Sages Upamanyu and Vyakrapada had the darshan of Lord in this temple.

Temple History:

Similar to the story of Mother Parvathi feeding Saivite child saint Tirugnana Sambandar with wisdom milk, Lord Perumal brought here the very milk ocean itself to feed a hungry child. He is but Sirkali Lord Van Purushothaman. Devotees pray to Lord considering Him as Lord Sri Rama.

Sage Vyakrapada came to this temple with his child Upamanyu, placed him at the entrance of the temple and went to pick flowers for Lord. The child began to cry for food which fell in the ears of Lord reclining in the milk ocean. He immediately created a milk ocean in this place. Mother Purushothama Nayaki fed the child with the milk.
Greatness Of Temple:

The temple ranks among the 108 Divya Desas of Perumal. Saint Tirumangai Azhwar has described Lord of the Temple as Lord Rama of Ayodhya in his Mangala Sasanam hymns, saying that benefits would accrue not only to the one chanting the glory of Lord but also to those listening the chanting. The belief is that issues of any complex nature would be solved if one performs Vishnu Sahasranama archana for 48 days continuously without any break and conclude the prayer with special archana and puja on the final day.

There are only two Purushothama temples, one in Karamanur near Tiruchi and the one here. Great Vaishnavite Acharya Sri Manavala Mamunigal stayed in Van Purushothama temple and served the Lord for two years. The temple has three Anjaneya shrines. In the Sri Rama shrine, He appears in a worshipping position with hands folded and mouth closed. The Tiruparkadal with crystal clear water without the green stuff (Paasi in Tamil) is north of this place. Perumal is very fond of Shenbaga flowers.

Sthala Puranam:

As the perumal of this place gave the Thirupaarkadal and stands as Rama the greatest among the men so named as Purushothaman along with his wife Purushothama Naayaki - Periya piratti, this place is called as Thiru Vann Purushothamam.

As Lord Narayana gave generously the Thirupaarkadal to Upamanyu Maharishi, the theertham is known as Thirupaarkadal Theertham.

Sanjeevi Mooligai (An herb) saved Lord Rama itself. So inorder to indicate this, the Vimaanam of this place is named as Sanjeevi Vigraha Vimaanam.

The term Purushothamam means the person who is best among Bhaktar, Muktar, Nitheyar and Purushar (ie) among Devotees, the person who had attained eternity, the soul of the human being always lives with the god.

The Utsavar Purushotaman found in this sthalam is said to be so beautiful and can easily attract everyones attention and heart towards him.

Moolavar:

The Temple

The temple has a small temple complex. It is located in Thirunangur, a small village, 10 km away from Sirkali en route to Thiruvenkadu; The temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Peralulalan and his consort Lakshmi as Allimalar Nachiyar.

Temple History:

While returning to Ayodhya after killing Ravana in war, Lord Sri Rama stayed in the hermitage of Sage Dhrudanetra Muni. As suggested by the sage, to cleanse Him of the Brahmmahati dosha for killing Ravana, Lord Rama made a big Golden Cow, entered into it and performed penance for four days. Then He donated the golden cow to a Brahmin on the fifth day. He sold the cow and used the proceeds to build this temple. As the temple was built with sale proceeds of the golden cow, the place came to be known as Sem Pon Sei Koil – Sempon-pure gold, koil-temple.

Greatness Of Temple:

Of the 108 Divya Desas, this is the temple for which Lord Himself raised the fund to build this temple. Lord blesses devotees facing east. Perumal is praised by many names as Semponnarangar, Herambar and Perarulalan. The Vimana above the sanctum is known as Kanaka Vimanam. He is Arulalan in His Paramapatha kingdom. As He is also with us for ever pouring his grace, He is called Perarulalan-All Merciful. Mother Alli Mamalar Nachiar is gracing the devotees along with Mother Bhoomadevi.

A Brahmin, Kashyapa by name, living in Kancheepuram lost all his wealth and was reduced to a pauper. He came to this holy land, chanted the ‘Ohm Namo Narayanaya’ mantra 32 thousand times within three days surrendering at Lord’s feet.

Sthala Puranam:
In the Ramayana time, Rama killed Ravana who was a Brahmin. So he was caught by the sin of killing a Brahmin. To get rid of this sin, he came to Rameswaram to worship the Sivalingam made by Sita devi.
Then he came to this place and stayed in the Thrida Nethra Maharishi's Ashram.

According to his advice, he made a golden cow and stayed upon it for 4 days. Later he donated it to a Brahmin.

The Brahmin sold the gold and constructed this temple. As the gold got from Sri Rama was the reason behind the formation of this temple, this place is called as "Sem Ponn Sei Kovil" where Sem Ponn means pure gold.

Lord Shiva inorder to get rid of his Brahmagarthi dhosam performed the Ekadasa Rudhra Ashvametha yagam. When the Yagna was about to complete, Lord shiva had the dharsan of Lord Narayana along with his wives Periya Piratti, Bhoomi Piratti and Nela devi, Lord Brahma and all the devas.

In order to bless Lord Shiva, Lord Narayana took 11 forms in and around Thirunaangur as follow:

ThirukavalampadiGopalakrishnan along with Rukmani and Satyabama.
ThiruvannpurushothamamPurushothaman along with Purushotama Naayaki.
Thiru Sempon SeiKovilPerarulaalan along with Allimaamalar Naachiyar.
Thirudevanar ThogaiDeivanaayagan along with Kadal Magal Naachiyar.
Thiru Mani KoodamVaradharaja Perumal along with Thirumagal Naachiyar and Bhoomi Piratti.
Thiru paarthanpalliThamarai Kelvan along with Thamarai Naayaki, in standing posture in all the above Kshetrams.
Thirumanimaada kovilNarayana Gyana Nandha Vilaku along with Pundarigavalli.
Thiruvaali ThirunagariAmrudhavalli Vedharajan, Narashimar along with Amrudha Kada valli.
Thiru vaigunda vinnagaramVaigunda Naadhan along with Periya Piratti.
Arimeya vinnagaramKudamaadu Koothan along with Amrudha Kada valli, in sitting posture in above 4 Kshetrams.
Thirutheythri AmbalamShenkann Maal along with Shenkamalavalli, in sleeping posture of the type Bhujanga Sayanam.
Totally 11 forms of which 6 in standing posture, 4 in Sitting posture and finally 1 in sleeping posture.
As an wish of Lord Shiva, Lord Narayana is accompanied by 11 forms of Para Shakthi (Godess) inherting the power of all the 108 Shakthi peedams on those 11 forms inorder to give their devotees Shakthi and Gyana. It's been said all the above perumals together gets us out of all our dhosams and sins.

As the Lord gives away love generously to his devotees along with Lord Shiva, he is called as Perarulaalan (ie) person of generously. Perarulalan gives wealth to his devotees as Lord Ranganatha, Utsavar is named as Hemarangar and Semponn arangar.

Lord Shiva and Vishnu merging into a sing deity blesses us at all the eleven Thirunaangur Thirupathi's. The reason behind the formation of the total number of 11 is the Ashtaksha Mandiram "Om Namo Narayanaya" of 8 syllable reduces in to the "Om Narayanaya" mandiram of 6 syllable to combine with Lord Shivas Panchatsaram "Namashivaya" of 5 syllable to give a total of 11 syllables - 11 Thirunaangur thirupathi's.

To indicate the non ending generosity of Perarulaan even during night time, the Thaayar has the name of Alli (Lilly flower) blooming in night.

In order of respect to the Golden cow of Sri Rama, the Vimaanam is named Kanaka Vimaanam (Kanakam - gold) and Pushkarani Hema Theertham and Kanaka Theertham.

An historical note registered the temple says that once there lived a Brahmin Mukunda elder son of Kashyaba. He chanted the Ashtaksha Mandiram continuously for 32 thousand times here to gain abundant wealth from Perarulaalan and was succeded in his attempt.

This sthalam seems to be connected with Sri Ramar - however the moolavar and urchavar both are Sri Mahavishnu. Ofcourse, Sri Rama is Sri Vishnu himself, but what I am trying to say is that unlike special Ramar kovils, this sthala inspite of having an event related to Sri Rama, is not having him in that manifestation as the sthala deity.

The Temple

Narayanan Perumal Temple

Thirumanimadam Temple (or) Narayanan Perumal Temple has located at Thirunangur village of Nagapattinam district. Nangur is the holy place, where the Eleven Divya Deshams of Vishnu located. Thirunangur has situated 10kms from Sirkazhi.

Thirumanaimadakoil - Thirumangai Azhwar praising the Perumal as Nandha Vilakku Perumal, means The Moolavar of Thirumanimaadakoil stands as a lamp which spreads Gnana - Wisdom to the entire world. Hence the ALMIGHTY is worshipped as Swayam Prakasha Perumal and Swayam Prakasha Gnanam.

Nadha vilakku means the lamp which gives out the light continuously. Once Dhurvasa Mnui received a Holy Garland from Goddess Maha lakshmi, which was then handed over Indhiran, when Dhurvasar visit Indhra Loham. Without knowing the value of the garland, Indhiran gave that too his Iravadham ( His White Elephant ). The poor elephant smashed the garland, which was noticed by Dhurvasar. Angry sage cursed Indhiran, hence Indhiran lost all his wealth and powers.

As a remedy along with Asuras he started Churning the Milky Ocean on Ekadhasi Thidhi and the next day on Dhuvadashi Thidhi he got all his wealth back. As he worshipped ALMIGHTY here, temple pushkarini is known as Indra Theertham.

The main God of the temple is Lord Vishnu known as Narayana Perumal and Goddess known as Pundareekavalli. In this temple, Garuda Sevai celebrated in grand manner.

Legend

The Legend says that once Devas wanted the ALMIGHTY to tell them the meaning of Thirumandhiram as he did in Badri, Pleased Paranthaman fulfilled their wish here in Thirumanimadam.

Nara Narayanar is the dual form of Lord Vishnu who act as a teacher as well a student at the same time As a teacher HE teaches Thirumandhiram to HIMSELF. Naran means a common man, as HE listens to Thirumandhiram. Narayanan, the Lord as HE teaches Thirumandhiram. Nara Narayanan is the Perumal of Badri who taught Thirmandhiram to HIMSELF. Hence both the Divyadesams are considered equal and here the ALMIGHTY is being worshipped as equal as Nara Narayanan of Badrinath.

Thirumangai Azhwar praises HIM as “Nadha Vilakke, Alaththarkariyai Nara Narayanane”.

Temple Speciality

1. On every day after Thai Amavasai, all the Perumals of the eleven Thriunaangur Thirupathis come here to Manimaaada Kovil in their in Garuda Vahanams.

Divya Desam 34-Thiruthetriyambalam or Palli Konda Perumal Temple

Thiruthetri.jpg

The Temple

Thiruthetriyambalam or Palli Konda Perumal Temple a village in the outskirts of Sirkazhi in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu, is dedicated to the Hindu god Vishnu. Constructed in the Dravidian style of architecture, the temple is glorified in the Divya Prabandha, the early medieval Tamil canon of the Azhwar saints from the 6th–9th centuries AD. It is one of the 108 Divyadesam dedicated to Vishnu, who is worshipped as Palli Konda Perumal.

The temple complex has a single prakaram(outer courtyard) and a separate shrine for Thayar, the consort. It is located close to Thirunangur, a small village, 8 km east of Sirkali en route to Thiruvenkadu.

The moolavar is Senkanmaal also known as Pallikondan in a reclining posture (“Kidantha Thirukkolam”), Bhujanga sayanam facing east and Thayar is Senkamalavalli enshrined in a separate shrine. In order to convey bagavathas that the one explained in the Vedas is none other than Himself, the vimaanam is called Vedha Vimaanam.

Sthalapuranam:

The Lord of this kshetram is known under the name “Palli Konda perumal”. He poses as Lord Ranganatha with four hands. In a way of explaining the Unison of Lord Shiva and Vishnu, Lord Vishnu has adopted many qualities of Lord Shiva such as dancing (Kuravai Koothu at Thiru Arimeya Vinnagaram), Accepting Lord Chandra as a head ornament in Thirushankadu etc, he transforms this place as his stage for dancing as Lord Shiva took Chidambaram as his dance stage, and stys still as Ranganatha representing stableness Shivalogam.

Hiranyasura, an asura concealed the Bhoomi in the Badala Lokam. Devas and Rishis appealed to Shriman Narayana to recover Bhoomi and keep it in its original trojectory. Conceeding their request Shriman Narayana took the form of Varaha Avathar. Mahalakshmi, who was disappointed by this appealed to Shriman Narayana that She always wanted to be in His chest and that She would be deprived of Her privillage if MahaVishnu were to take Varaha Avathar. Adisehsa also wondered in confusion about his fate.

Shriman Narayana consoled them and said that all would be in the interest of the earth and that only good things and deeds would prevail. He advised them to go to Palasa vanam where Siva also would join them and meditate for Him. He assured them He would come to Palasa vanam after killing Hiranyasa to grant them Anugraham. He also assured Them, that His ardent Bhaktha, Bashyakara along with 108 learned Vaishnavas would perform Aradhana and that He would safeguard the Earth from there throughout Kaliyuga. He took the Varaha Avathar, went to Badala Lokam and destrioyed the demon Hiranyasura and positioned Earth in its appropriate location in the orbit. Learning this, Mahalakshmi and Adiseshan went to Palasa vanam and did Thapasya.

Shriman Narayana, as promised went to Palasa vanam and graced His presence to Shiva, Maha Lakshmi and Adisesha. The Palasa vanam is none other than Thiru Thetri Ambalam. Then, he revealed himself with his His beautiful red eyes. And that is why He is known as Sengan Mal Ranganathar in Thiruthetri Ambalam.

Religious Significance

The temple is revered in Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 7th–9th century Vaishnava canon, by Thirumangai Azhwar in one hymn and Poigai Azhwar in one hymn. The temple is classified as a Divyadesam, one of the 108 Vishnu temples that are mentioned in the book. It is one among the eleven divyadesams of Thirunangur Tirupathis and is closely associated with Thirumangai Alvar. It is also the only temple in the Nangur divyadesams to have been revered by an azhwar other than Thirumangai Alvar. It is also the only one of the eleven to have both Rama and Krishna as festival deities

Mangalasasanam:
Thirumangaialwar – 10 Paasurams (1278-87).

Sannidhis:

Seperate sannidhis is there for Alwars, Chakkrathalwar, Lord Lakshmi Narayana with Goddess Sridevi & Boodevi Nachiyar, Lord Santhana Gopalakrishnan

Festivals:

During the worship, religious instructions in the Vedas (sacred text) are recited by priests, and worshippers prostrate themselves in front of the temple mast. There are weekly, monthly and fortnightly rituals performed in the temple.

The annual Theerthavari festival is celebrated during the New moon day of Tamil month of Aadi when the festival deity of the temple is taken in a procession to the sea at Poompuhar. During the new moon day of the Tamil month Thai, the festival deity of Thirumangai Azhwar is brought to the temple from Thiruvali-Thirunagari. The Thirumangai Azhwar Mangalasasana Utsavam is celebrated in the Tamil month of Thai (January–February).
