Last few days have witnessed high profile discussions in our forum.

To lighten the mood, i am starting this thread..

I am expecting lot of bouquets or friendly brickbats, nothing more...

This thread is about ascertaining the views of members on NTS, that is "Nadigar Thilagam Sivaji"

You may be wondering why the thread is then named "10 : 40"

"10 : 40" is the code word for NTS in my friends circle which represents the fact that Shiv acted for 40 Rs. even if he was paid for only Rs. 10. I mean the proportion of his "over acting" was such that we find some of his "senti" movies as the most comical we have ever seen.

Sample - Gauravam, Thanga padakkam, Thillana Mohanambal etc...

What do you guys feel ?

As a safe harbour : I mean no disrespect to NTS but at the same time can't stand his over acting.

sir - actually it is not mistake of NTS! i think Mr. Karunanidhi should shoulder blame for this!
his first film 'parasakthi' required him to do lot of overacting. unfortunately this rubbish film became a big hit, and so NTS was typecast throughout his entire career overacting & overacting! it was because of the pace & style of his dialogue delivery that absurd films like 'parasakthi' & manogara' became superhits. but for NTS there would have been no karunanidhi at all! it was NTS who was behind the success of the muthuvelar so much so that people still remember some dialogues of Parasakthi & Manohara! the karunanidhi could never achieve the success he achieved with NTS with other heroes in the same level.
once NTS distanced himself from the muthuvelar's films, the muthuvelar's career nosedived & hit rock bottom!!!

(I also meant no 'disrespect' to the Karunanidhi. what i cannot stand is the 'over' playing of emotions in the dialogues of his films like parasakthi & manogara!)

MK's response !!!!!

I guess MK's response to Suresh sir would be :

Thambi,

Yezhudiyadhu yen pena,
aanal pesiyadhu naana,
yennodu vambu vena,
varume pinnal thee muka vin sena !!!!!:flame:

Some samples

Presenting here some samples of NTS overdoing

a) M C - Mridanga Chakravarthy

He is the only percussionist till date who bled from his mouth after a long thani aavarthanam performance

b) Thanga padakkam

NTS is in office. News comes that KRV is dead. Once he hears the news, odamba oru siluppu silluppuvar paarunga....appa paaa.....knees coming forward & back going back......can't imagine how he managed to do it....Actually indha pose - knees front, back going back - we have a pet name called : Bracket......like a )

c) Many movies - heroine konjal

In any movie when NTS is in a playful mood & exhorting his heroine / wife to come out for a movie, dinner, to the park, just about anything....annan konjalla solluvaar : "ippo nee yenna sollara...chollu chollu chollu..."....maha janangale, look at the word "chollu".......appadiye namma thalaivar 'mazhalai tamizh' kku poyiduvar

Among our friends, we have a raging doubt.....We felt that after NTS kicked the bucket, he was not cremated for close to 3 days..coz guys couldn't figure out whether he is dead for sure or just acting !!!!!

Once sivaji was terminally ill - in ’96 & was bedridden. It was the day of India’s semi-final vs Sri Lanka at Calcutta. violence erupted after India lost a flurry of wickets chasing & match was awarded to Sri Lanka.

We’ll all remember as to how Vinod kambli, tears running down his both cheeks was walking back after decision was made.

It is said that NTS got up from bed at this opportune moment saying : “yaarindha thambi, nalla naddikkarahale”….that was the turning point in his revival & legend has that he lived few years after that. So, all credit goes to Vinod kambli for saving NTS’s life that day.

sir - i read all of your posts mainly because of the humour content. some poInts YOU HAVE MENTIONED about NTS are correct. i think the biggest drawback i saw was that NTS lacked humour. and his thoppai! that was horrible! by the time he became 50, he looked like a fat pregnant pig! but about overacting, i think it was the karunanidhi who instigated him to do that in 'parasakthi'. unfortunately 'parasakthi' succeeded and karunanidhi became a billionaire, using this victory as a spring board. but the career of NTS became typecast as an overactor! MUDHAL KONAL, MUTRUM KONAL! MUDHAL OVERACTING! MUTRUM OVERACTING!!!

Illa saar, NTS was full of humour...

Humour was "bottled up" inside him....that's why we missed seeing it.....Whisky bottle la whisky full a irundhalum bottle kku bothai yerradhilla....aana andha bottle la irundha oru peg namba ulla pona, namakku bodha thalladum.....

NTS - whisky bottle.......avaroda padam than - namma podara peg !!!

sir - what about the kamalahaasa? if NTS IS overactor, k.haasa is overplayer! in all his films, he gives importance to the role he plays and totally downplays (i.e. mattam thattuvadhu!) the other characters. all the songs, dances, fights, everything will be for him, and actors playing other roles, even if they are heroes of fame & stature are reduced to playing 2nd fiddle! e.g. jayaram in THENALI, PRABHU IN 'VASOOL RAJA', shahrukh khan in 'hey ram', madhavan in 'anbe sivam' etc., the haasa has played even 4 roles in a film! now the haasa has threatened to play 10 roles in a porn film called "Dasavatharam" ! phew for the haasa!!!

overplaying is as boring as overacting! moreover NTS can speak 'senthamizh' i.e classical tamil fluently. can the haasa do it? if the haasa speaks classical tamil in a film, it could well turn out to be a full length comedy of the proportions the world has never seen before!!!!!!!! just imagine the haasa speaking the dialogues of 'kattabomman' in the place of NTS and you will understand what i am trying to say!!

I agree.....but NTS too was no different

I agree. But sir, NTS was no different. If you look at, Nagesh for example, (whom i regard as the best south indian actor), his role was clearly marginalised in NTS movies. Contrast this with MGR movies, Nagesh had a whale of a time. MGR was quick to recognise that as much as people wanted to see MGR, they wanted to see Nagesh too.

Sir overplaying roles na - till date it is NTS leading the pack. Remember Navarathiri where NTS plays 9 roles. In my circle this film is codenamed 9 : 360 (since NTS got 9 roles in his bag, he gave a 10% discount on his fees hence Rs. 9 & he overacted so much in this movie that the ratio got expanded to 1 : 40). Ofcourse "haasa" will beat NTS.

K'haasa is the undisputed king of double entendre....He has got paired with every heroine i can think of, perhaps to the exception of Suhasini (magal murai) & Kamala kamesh !!!!!. He has a great penchant for french kissing or underwear changing scenes & you'll hardly find any movie of his without either of them.

In the garb of artistic freedom, he pushes thru lot of pervertism. The height of his pervertedness is evidenced in "Aalavandan". He may be good by Indian standards but clearly couldn't impress the Oscars....For him Oscar is a case of "Chee chee indha pazham pullikkum".

Perhaps I&B Ministry could conceive a similar sounding award called "Bhaskars" and award him so that he can retire gracefully. :clap2:

Hey guys!
Who is NTS? And... why is Kamalahaasan's name split and pronounced sounding like a muslim?

NTS is Nadigar Thilagam Shivaji, the doyen of Tamil Cinema

Kamalahaasan - I was just playing ball with Suresh.

sir - the irony here is that NTS & the haasa were very close 'friends'!! somuch so that it was in the presence of NTS that the haasa married his 2nd 'wife'(?) sarika, and that too after becoming parents of 2 children! but NTS proved to be jinxed for the haasa, as the marriage collapsed and sarika ran away from the haasa back to mumbai, from where she eloped with the haasa!!!

the haasa just to get the sympathy of audience, in his film, in contrived situations, quails, wails and laments like african elephants! the haasa always targets awards.!!

that apart, it seems 'fans' of the haasa have entered this forum. there are already abuses and quails threatening not to write anything adverse about the haasa!!!

NTS -- Cho's narration of an incident

Hari
I would not entirely agree with you. Yes NTS did overacting. But he was also capable of acting in a subtle way.
In one of the questions on thuglak, someone had exactly asked about this. Cho narrated an incident. It seems he was on a shoot and after shivaji did the take in his usual way , he came and asked cho how was it? Cho replied saying it was too over the board. Sivaji then acted the same scene in a subtle way and cho appreciated it. Then sivaji told him this: " If I act this way only a few like you will appreciate. But the former style is what the masses like". An actor gives what is needed by the masses. It is true that an actor can cultivate the taste of the masses. But it cannot happen overnight and it cannot be done by just one actor.
Kamal tried some good cinema but many such idea flopped. -- Hey Ram etc. Ofcourse kamal tries to be "politically correct" in the dravida land by abusing brahmins and acting holier than thou or in other words more dravidian than MK or EVT . I attribute it to fear psychosis and the need to get majority appreciation and commercial success ( since TN is NB-land and NBs love to see Brahmins caricatured and villified. Incidentally sujatha also does this many times).
But I think with the advent of dubbed hollywood films, people are getting exposed to good cinema or atleast a different cinema. I think the caricaturing of brahmins have been done to death in Tamil movies and so I expect none would be interested in watching them. There will be more interesting movies ( of course "inspired" by Hoolywood) with more action and less meaningless melodrama or racism.
Let us hope for a change atleast if not the best.

How did you know it ?

Kashyap,

Ya i am aware of the incident you have mentioned. I always thought not many knew it. Hats off !

Ofcourse if one 'deep-dives' into the reasons for NTS's over doing, apart from what you have mentioned, i guess it's also got to do with the fact that he came from "stage play".

There is not much scope for subtleness in stage plays & i guess that's how he got used to over doing be in his body language or voice.

As i have mentioned in my first post, the objective of this post is to "harmlessly" laugh & make fun of NTS's over acting & definitely i don't mean any dis-respect to him.

Making fun of NTS was a favourite school pastime of ours & i thought that i could get few more laughs.

Ofcourse we had our own share of "successes" when me & my friend convinced our mothers' that "Chevvaliye" award by French Govt was given to NTS for his "comedy acting" & that the prize consisted of 2 "Sev vazhais" !!!!! (red bananas)

But there is one point which i want to make which is that many people in private would accuse NTS of overacting but in public they always want to be "politically correct". I also feel that Nagesh hasn't got his due. In my book he is the greatest SI actor.

Just one laugh on NTS, albeit a personal one.

It was during my CA preparation days. I used to go to my friends place who are like an extended family to me & (act as if) prepare (ing) all day. Obviously TV was a must for us to study & we will be tuned in almost 24 hours. Late into the night when some channels used to play NTS movies we used to make such ruckus that it was impossible for anyone to sleep. Me, my friend & his younger brother went a bit overboard one day & suddenly my friend's father couldn't take any more "bashing" of his favourite actor. In a fit of anger he asked my friend's younger brother to stand up on the sofa & speak for ten minutes continously before criticising NTS !!!.

We didn't require a second warning after that !!!!

just looked at objectively. I know this is for fun . We also had our share of fun mimicking him.

Then on hindsight , I thought a person has to have achieved something in order to inspire people to mimick him.

Of course I found this all funny !

Dear friends:
After 40 years, I am back in Tamil Nadu and, of course, try to watch Tamil movies. I find it hard to follow the dialog because it is too fast! These are my observations:
1. They STILL shoot Tamil films as if they are on a stage - they all SHOUT!
2. When shooting a scene containing several people, have you noticed that they all stand in line; people don't stand in line in normal situations! Again, they go to back to STAGE era!
3. As part of comedy, the comedian slaps an adult (or he gets slapped)! I find this terrible; what kind of role-model are we teaching our children - that slapping people is ok?
4. The heroes are stronger than Hercules! One punch and the other guy not just falls down - he goes up on air, twirls several times and then comes down!! wow! perhaps an Olympic feat! It never fails and movies follow this!!
5. Violence is celebrated and encouraged - I have never seen so many sickles! I guess this could be the equivalent of US guns!!!

sir - its NTS for you k.haasa for me! making fun of k.haasa has always been my favourite pastime, particular when i am talking with my wife, very close circle etc., but i think you are very safe. because NTS passed away in 2001 itself, so his fan clubs are not active as before. so they are not and will not react violently to your postings. but the 'haasa' unfortunately is still in the field and his 'fans' & 'fan clubs' are also very active. so taking on the 'haasa' is a relatively tough job! here is a 'joke' about the 'haasa' which i posted in another thread already!

once devar films went to the 'haasa' for booking him. the 'haasa' said 'sir devar films always give prominence to animals in their films.' devar films replied 'yes! that is why we have come to book you for our next film!!!!'

why r u calling him k.hasa? why target only him? r u a rajini bhakta?

Tamil Movies

3. As part of comedy, the comedian slaps an adult (or he gets slapped)! I find this terrible; what kind of role-model are we teaching our children - that slapping people is ok?

What you don't understand ? What do you think "slap"stick comedy to be ?

4. The heroes are stronger than Hercules! One punch and the other guy not just falls down - he goes up on air, twirls several times and then comes down!! wow! perhaps an Olympic feat! It never fails and movies follow this!!

Why wouldn't they be ? Have you seen their tags - Super Star, Supreme Star, Ultimate Star, Mega Star - so how could they behave just like mortals ?

Actually you have missed many other USPs of Tamil Cinema

a) "Punch" Dialogue - This is a repetitive dialogue which the hero utters at most opportune moments with rhyme but whether with reason or not. Do you have an hollywood equivalent

b) Hero "Intro" Scene - Most important scene of the movie. First show his shoes, camera slowly pans & lo & behold ! you have an ear to ear grinning hero wearing rayban coolers, nike shoes & reebok T shirt. But he is just an auto driver. Now, dare not use the word "LOGIC". For us it is only "MAGIC" that counts

c) Thathuva padal - One song, generally upfront in the movie in which hero exhorts others to follow all such ideals which, in his private life, he can never.

d) Heroine - Hero first meeting : Love at first sight, Love without any sight, Modhal-Kadhal, Helping Heroine-Kadhal, Helping Others-Kadhal, Saving Heroine from Villain-Kadhal, Dream-Heroine-Kadhal - These are just some of the formulae which are employed to make this work.

Ivvalo periya periya matter ellam tamil cinema la irukku adha poi neenga cheapa eda pottutengale sir

why r u calling him k.hasa? why target only him? r u a rajini bhakta?

sir -no! i am not a fan of any actor, though i do see films on television. but rajini, though he is a chain smoker, a meat eater and a boozer has not abused any community, and moreover i understand rajini is not a womaniser. rajini does not seem to be suffering from any fear pschycosis (like the 'haasa' suffers as you have rightly said) , inferiority complex or intransigence. inspite of not being an educated person, rajini has made a sincere effort to read scriptures and has appreciated them openly. rajini has not betrayed his wife. rajini has not committed adultery. moreover he is not a 'rationalist'.

if you read my postings even in random, you could have found out that i have not eulogised any actor. so i am certainly not a bhakta of any actor .

just like a bowler targetting batsmen, as a bramin member of a bramin forum i am targetting bramin abusers. i call him 'haasa' just for fun. if rajinikant can becalled rajini, sivaji NTS, then what is wrong in calling the 'haasa' a 'haasa'????

Are you sure about this? He's a devotee of Sri Raghavendra. Why would he do all this?

Are you sure about this? He's a devotee of Sri Raghavendra. Why would he do all this?

sir - yes! he has openly admitted that he drinks, smokes and consumes meat. in fact these are things about him which i do not like at all, although he has openly said that he has very high respect for orthodox hinduism!!!

Hi Suresh:
Boy! You sure are keeping a tab on all the movie stars as if it is going to change my life!!
So what if Rajnikant or Kamalahaasan ate meat, drank or whatever? Do we care?
I wish you would take interest in helping the community in other ways.
It looks like you are on a crusade; except there is nobody behind you!!

sir - as i said earlier, if late sivaji ganesan is ridiculed, there is no opposition to it, because, sivaji expired in 2001 itself! but if the 'haasa' is ridiculed, his 'fans' chest beat profusely! the main reason is, the 'haasa' is still active & alive in the films and his 'fans' indulge in violent reactions to even ordinary comments about the 'haasa'!
this is a thread for pure fun alone. not to be taken very seriously. i have mentioned only about a few stars out of more than total of hundreds of stars. this is also a way of helping my community - weaning them away from tamil cinema. i suspect god will be with me in this crusade behind & in front of me too!!!

Upcoming : NTS movie in Sun TV

For some of you, who wouldn't have had the opportunity of seeing a NTS movie, one of the forthcoming saturdays Sun TV is telecasting "Thillana Mohanambal" a mega NTS movie.

It is in reference to the sweeping judgments made on the Late Shivaji Ganesan. It is rather paining to picture him the way some of our esteemed members have tried to. We all have our own whims & fancies! But, it should not come in the way when we judge some individual’s contribution, it is even more so when we analyse some great personalities like Shivaji Ganesan. An actor is over-acting or such a thing is further linked with Mu. Ka. is still disheartening. Well, one can have one’s own respect or the lack of it for any person; but when it comes to public figures like Shivaji, let us refrain from disrespecting/making mockery, if not giving credits or ‘pugaluraigal’. It is Shivaji who had greatly contributed to the Hinduism, particularly, to the great Tamil Saiva- chithantam; in 1960s and the early 1970s the Tamil society as a whole was not that educated or developed as it is today, in fact, the tamil brahmins were much more poor as there were not many who had gone to the West and brought-in rich harvest of dollars/pounds, not even dinars or rials (while now there are a number of them well settled in different parts of the world and sending a sizable proportion of their savings to home here). Moreover, it was the hey-day of Dravidian movements with Periyar himself at the helm of affairs, and be it C.N. Annadurai or Mu.Ka were all upcoming leaders by then; it was Shivaji who happened to be in their own ‘Kazhagams’ for long, still could come out with some of the best films, take the films of the great producer-director A.P. Nagarajan, films like Thiruvilaiyadal, Thiruvarutselvar, Saraswathi Sabhatham and the likes made an immense impact in each and every tamilian, irrespective of caste and colour. Perhaps, it can be said as the ‘renaissance period’ for tamil vedam and bhakthi movement. Even some of his roles in films like ‘Vietnam Veedu’ or the police officer role in Thanga Pathakkam (which has been very badly reviewed in the discussion in the thread) are not ordinary! The senior police officers of 1970s seemed to have confessed that many police officers changed their style, be it in walking or the mush or everything, they admitted that he resembles to a perfect police officer. With big thoppai, why don't you see the film like 'Mudal Mariyadai' or "Thunai"? Any way, as I said earlier, to analyse a film or the lifetime contribution of certainl actors like Shivaji cannot be done the way it is done with ‘Saif Ali Khah ( I have seen in some other thread in this web – glorifying Saif Ali Khan or Rani Mukherji); I am referring to it because the same yardsticks cannot be used when it comes to personalities like Shivaji, MGR, Rajnikanth or Kamalhaasan. May be, I am afraid, that we have started criticizing everything which is not Brahmin, a dangerous proposition, as they do it against everything which is Brahmin. One type of 'wrong perception' cannot undo the other type of 'wrong perception'. My intention is not to hurt anyone’s sentiments or interests, but I feel that in Tamilnadu many great personalities (who are not Brahmins) but have contributed so much to different fields of knowledge, including religion, customs, traditions, arts and so on, and the tamil Brahmin community has not given full credence to them; and hence in turn, the entire non-brahmins have an in-built bias against us, after all they have been holding the political power with them for long now. Once again, these are some of my thoughts. We can continue on this dialogue endlessly, but the purpose should take us a little forward and advanced than where we are now. With regards, balaiyer.
