A stork that stayed at the Madurai Sri Meenakshi Sundareswarar temple tank for five days and attracted several devotees died on Wednesday. Devotees who saw the stork recalled an episode in 'Thiruvilayadal Puranam' in which a stork performed a penance to get a boon from Lord Sundareswarar, the main deity of the temple, and attained 'mukthi'.
Even now the temple tank has no fish and the festival commemorating giving mukthi to the stork still takes place at the temple during the Aavai Moola Thiruvizha every year. It is attended by thousands of devotees, Natarajan said.
