Dear Sri Kunjuppu,

The job of Scavenging by a particular community is a Social Problem like any other Cate based division of labour of the past generations. In olden days there used to be conservancy lanes behind our Houses for the entry of scavengers. Now it is gone for ever. Thanks to the advancement of technology and building standards this practice of manual collection of night soil has ceased considerably. In today's world I have seen modern toilet facilities are available even in remotest places like "Bhojbasa" in Himalayas. By chance if this practice is continued any where in the Country, this should be banned by Law and severe punishment. No purpose will be gained by asking other Communities to engage in this job. On the other hand if need be, no one should shy away from any job that they could do, in the name of caste. I have noticed that education and migration from villages have changed the Social structure considerably at least in Cities. This will continue.

Regards,
Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Manual scavenging is almost in its way out. But now there is a new menace, garbage removal in cities and towns. It is a job only slightly less dirty as compared to scavenging, mainly because our people are not sensitive enough to package it neatly, and, unlike the bigger cities, the workers have to personally collect the smelly plastic bags from each house.
Somehow we people are highly insensitive to civic decency. I don't know when and whether we will improve!

sangom,

i agree with you. these guys sink themselves in the garbage truck.

another sad sight, still to see, is humans going inside sewers to clean up the clogged ones. plus the exposure to toxins and poisonous gases.

these guys should be paid a premium for their jobs...atleast

Dear Sir,
I agree totally. These people should be given special salaries, adequate protective gear, free cleansing agents and proper insurance. They deserve our thanks and need our support. Thanks.

So, I think, I shall stick to what I know.

Greetings to everyone.

Sow.Raji Ram raised some social awareness in post #13.

1. Sow.Raji Ram's concern about children in Sivakasi is history. It does not happen anymore. It is eradicated. I request Sow.Raji Ram to acknowledge that, please.

"BUT Sivakasi IS Different. HOW?
Sivakasi's main business is fireworks, match units and printing press. Its annual business is over Rs 1000 crores. Half of it is from sale of fireworks. This is where the NGOs hit them. They allege child labour in Sivakasi fireworks and match units. The basic facts about Sivakasi clearly contradict the charges. This small town has as many as 42 educational institutions. This includes three arts colleges, a women's college, an engineering college, two polytechnics and one pharmaceutical college. About 39,000 students, almost equal number of boys and girls, are on their rolls. Who built this huge educational infrastructure? Not the government. The fireworks owners. If children were their human resource why would they build schools for them? Also colleges. They have enough money to send their children to any place in India or abroad for studies.

Not just that. The government has declared Virudhunagar district in which Sivakasi falls as 100% literate. How can that go with child labour? It is not all. `Child labour in Sivakasi is a myth, a 15-year-old story'. Not the fireworks owners, the District Collector says so. Just three months back. He discloses that in Virudhunagar district in which Sivakasi falls, from four lakh households 2.24 lakh children attend schools. Some of course do not. But lack of awareness, not child labour, is the reason for that, he asserts. The number of those bunking schools, he says, is less than 9%, even though the people below poverty line is between 36% and 40%. He said so in public. The very media, of course only the Tamil media, reported him. More evidence exists, if needed."

Sivakasi City - No Child Labour in Sivakasi - Its Eradicated says District Collector

"As of 2001[update] India census[1], Sivakasi had a population of 72,170. Males constitute 50% of the population and females 50%. Sivakasi has an average literacy rate of 77%, higher than the national average of 59.5%: male literacy is 82%, and female literacy is 72%. In Sivakasi, 11% of the population is under 6 years of age."

I shall adress the next points in the following posts, please.

here is another one, which is my pet peeve.

why do newly well off tambrams spend so much money on weddings? what is it that prompts them to do so? most of us as a community were only a generation away from paycheck to paycheck livelihood.

while it is heartwarming to see those madisar brides clad in silk sarees, should it cost 1 lakh? are there not any available for half that price, and still look as good as her mother's?

how many diamond necklaces can the girl wear at one time? mind you, these spendings come out willingly out of the girls' parents, and it is more a show of how much money the father has made and can spend.

why do we pay lakhs in advance for the mandapams? i am sorry to say that every wedding i go these days, and there appears to be many, here in toronto and chennai (again one in january) all the indications are many a lakhs will be spent.

my big mouth always critiques such occassions but i am always laughed off. nobody takes me seriously. this is worse than being asked to leave, in my opinion.

ofcourse, there are always arguements that these are good for the economy. but any type of spending is good for the economy. the question i have, is would it not be better to spend half that money and get the same 'kick', and spend the other half on social purposes.

my dream wedding to attend, would be a simple 'family only' religious celebration followed by a reception. both the religious needs and the social obligations are met. and spend the balance educating a poor child or endowment to a hospital? ours is a tight fisted community when it comes to spending beyond the family. sad to say.

btw is there any religious significance for having muhurthams in the mornings? north indian brahmin weddings happen in the evenings, followed by one feast. all i am thinking, is how to do away with multiple feedings for the same crowd.

judging by the demands of the chennai marriage halls, nowadays, it appears more appropriate to book the wedding hall, and then look for the bride (or groom as the case may be) :(

Folks, internet is a wonderful thing, it connects people from many corners of the world, a world of information at your fingertips, whether it is Homer you want or a weblog by Nobody from Nowhere Land, it is all a G-search away. Even Kutty Japan can be searched -- yes there is a web portal called Kutty Japan where you can find all about Sivakasi, how wonderful the town is, why all the criticism about its major industry is all a myth, and order some firecrackers online to boot. Yes, this is a web portal run by what can only be called the Chamber of Commerce of Sivakasi.

The vast amount of information available in the web and the ready access to all of them comes with some caveats. To make proper sense of it all requires a modicum of a framework that will help us assess what to believe and by how much. Trying to surf the web without this framework is like trying to navigate the great oceans without a compass, or GPS these days.

Let me provide a couple of references, one from November 2007, and another from August 2009, pretty recent ones I think. The first on is from Indian Express.com, and the second one from Frontline. I think everyone will agree that these two are reputable sources as far as the media go, yet I cannot validate every last word in these articles. But one thing is certain, these two sources are less likely to be biased than the Kutti Japan portal run by the factory owners of Sivakasi.

Respected senior friends,

If the child labour in Sivakasi is a story of the past, it is something really great! But I have heard about accidents till very recently.

I wanted to mention in my poem, a few disturbing facts that we come across in day to day life.

In fact, there may be a lot more to add!

Regards,
Raji Ram

Respectable members,

Greetings. More on Sivakasi and fireworks........

1. As a society we did not boycott purchase of fireworks manufactured through child labour in the past; we don't do it now either. Where is the social drive, social plea for such an action?
2. How many of us support local manufacturers if any? Yes, they are slightly more expensive; the fireworks are not as fancyful; one may even have to pay in advance to enable the purchase of raw materials.
3. How about celeberating Deepavali quietly? Does it have to have fireworks?

As a society, we failed to dictate terms, where we could have. When we fail to take responsibilty, we are quick to blame others for the ill effects.

Burn injuries are horrible. It takes more to cure burn injuries than trauma injuries. I know about exposure to high temperatures like 1,000 Degree centigade (no typo). The accidents are horrible; safety ,measures need to be in place to eradicate such accidents.

Sri.Nara was kind enough to contribute two links with respect to this discussion.

Danger zone

"Silambarasan, a Class XI student, had succumbed to burn injuries sustained in the accident. Even as he began to narrate his tale of woe, his daughter Tamaraiselvi, who was studying in Standard VII in the same school as her brother, struggled to console her mentally challenged mother, Muthupillai. Holding a recent photograph of Silambarasan, a sobbing Tamaraiselvi said, “My brother was the school topper in Standard X. He always inspired me to study well so that I can achieve my dream of becoming a doctor.”

It was an unnecessasary waste of an young life. Safety standards, manufacturing techniques, storage facilities, safety protocols and medical help in hand are to be scrutinised and are to be improved. Class XI student does not come under 'child labour'. (My own children went to work when they were in class X. But the support here is very good). When kids work part time or during holidays, it can't be termed as 'exploitation'.

In the licensed factories, did the management take ownership? ....."The factory management disbursed Rs.2 lakh as compensation to the next of kin of the dead, and this is in addition to the insured amount of Rs.50,000. Labour union functionaries said though the management took care of the medical expenses of the injured workers, they were left high and dry after getting discharged from hospital. Only one-third of the workforce got statutory benefits such as Employees’ State Insurance or Provident Fund, they said."

"The Collector told Frontline that the factory owners were aghast at the serious action taken consequent upon the enforcement raids as even minor violations were not ignored. She said hereafter only joint raids by personnel of the departments concerned would take place in order to cover all licensed premises in a time-bound manner. “The actual cause of the accident can be ascertained only after the completion of the inquiry,” she said. On reports relating to the prevalence of child labour in the industry, she said the National Child Labour Project sources claimed that the system did not exist in the district. However, “one of the aims of the current action by the district administration is to wipe out child labour – direct or indirect – in the legal or illegal manufacturing units,” she asserted."

Social responsibility is a two way street. The wider society as customers, pump in money in that industry. We are as much at fault as the owners who make the profit.

Next time when our child enjoy fireworks, will we remind ourselves that children just like our own toiled (although working part-time) to manufacture that fire-works? If we do, then we may do something about it. It is up to us, the customers.

Every suffering due to accidents can be avioded. The safety standards can be improved. As per the child labour, it is up to the Government to enforce laws to make it compulsory for all the children to attend school; to enforce a minimum age limit for the part-time workers. (By the way, I wish to add here - we are supposed to be the government).

Next link - Korean broadcaster shoots documentary on Sivakasi child labour

"Karuppusamy, sits with members of his family in front of his hut, packing gun powder into cylindrical tubes. The camera pans to his face, grabbing the sight of his totally scarred and deformed face and hands. Does it hurt now, he is asked. "No," says 14-year-old Karupussamy, flexing his shriveled hands.
His father, Lingam, says that a small compensation was given. But the father was made to sign a statement which said the accident in which Karuppusamy was involved did not take place in the factory where he had worked earlier."

I am really sorry to note.....Karuppusamy, although a victim continues in the same kind of work....His father Lingam had not stopped it...I wonder why? Have the parents took a decision not to let their children engage in such risky work? If not, why not?

Cheers!

Respectable members,

Greetings. Sow.Raji Ram sraised the above question. (For the benefit of members not so well versed in written Tamizh - Young children, when they should be studying towards glories, why thay are trapped in 'red light areas (read 'forced prostitution) ?).

Until I saw the movie 'Mahanadhi' I was not aware of pedophiles in India; I was not aware of 'Sona Gachi'. Initially I thought it was an exaggeration; then I realised it was under represended in that movie.

India - Facts on Trafficking and Prostitution

We as the society pump in billions of dollars (no typo) in that 'industry'. We as the society provide the money; but, we as the society have not taken the responsibility to keep the prostitution industry clean. We have not put enough pressure on the governments to keep prostitution clean.

Prostitution industry is not a public limited company. Seldom girls (or boys for that matter) do not send applications with their resume for employment in that industry. Unlike in most other industries, the persons involved in sex trade industry, do not like to see their sisters/daughters/cousins securing an employment in that trade. In this trade, turn around is very high. One may last from 15 to 20 years at the top. So, for a high floating population of Indian cities, most of the sex trade workers are coercied into that trade. Here is a report -

Sexual slavery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

We as a society should think - Would we accept a former prostitute in our society? Would we accept a former prostitute in our family? Would we provide a 'house maid' job? Can those sex trade workers hope to live with dignity in our society? This is for everyone us to think.

I conclude this with a small appeal from 'Sunitha Krishnan'.

Hi!

This is in continuation to the on going debate about the manual scavenging; one has treat the job that he has undertaken to do and by which he is earning he should not complaint about. As the saying goes "WORK IS WORSHIP"; the day we start religiously accepting this saying and practicing the same one would stop complaining about it.

Moreover if the person who has undertaken this job for his daily wages why & who are we to discourage him by showing pity on him or just pretend as though we sympathies with him; lets not be Hippocrates. Let us all try to accept the fact as factual rather than blaming ones fate or discouraging somebody who is doing his work righteously.

Namaskarangal,

P R Subramanian

"Moreover if the person who has undertaken this job for his daily wages why & who are we to discourage him"

Show me one person who has willingly taken this job.

"Moreover if the person who has undertaken this job for his daily wages why & who are we to discourage him"

Show me one person who has willingly taken this job.

athreya,

i think the tone of discussion, is the dignity of labour, and it really does not matter what job we do.

also, taking into consideration, the social stigma associated in india with toilet cleaning (in most other countries it is just a job - and is not associated with a caste as a hand me down generational 'gift').

i think, your comment, 'Show me one person who has willingly taken this job', while valid, could be valid for many many other jobs. i think, to make this more attractive, is to pay such jobs premium wages.

money, after all, is a good motive, n'est pas? :)
