Chennai, Dec 19: The devastating floods that hit several parts of Chennai and nearby areas early this month have left 50,000 people unemployed in the micro, small and medium enterprises industry in the city, MSME Minister Kalraj Mishra said today.

"Chennai is the MSME hub. About 10,000 micro units have suffered losses, of which 95 per cent are service enterprises. The loss in terms of employment is to the tune of 50,000 in the micro enterprises alone," the minister said. Mishra said the impact of losses due to floods is being prepared and a detailed assessment report was being prepared. "Tomorrow Finance Minister Arun Jaitley is visiting the flood-affected areas.

Unlike other Industries, employees of IT industries are a pampered lot. Many of them come from other States for earning only. They have no plan of settling down in the place where they earn their money. If the going is not to their liking they will search for better places to migrate.

Brahmanyan,
Bangalore.

Many IT Companies had a BCP in place...Wipro moved its staff in 100 buses to Bengaluru...This rain and flooding will definitely impact the bottom lines of IT Companies for the 4th Quarter!

One has to wait and see how the major firms that have invested thousands of crores in the recently held ‘Global Investors Meet’ organized by the ruling Government with a dream to develop the State into a major Industrial hub, with lot of pomp and show and announced to have generated thousands of crores of funds from Investors who were promised attractive packages, react to such a situation

This may be the ground reality. A sample case to cite:

Chennai floods to have material impact on revenue: Hexaware Technologies

NEW DELHI: IT services firm Hexaware TechnologiesBSE 0.17 % today said the Chennai floods are expected to have material impact on its revenue and a one time influence on cost in the current quarter of the ongoing fiscal.

"In view of the extremely heavy and incessant rainfall and subsequent flooding, Chennai operations, except mission critical activities had to be suspended for 3 days... This is expected to have a material impact on the company's revenue for the quarter ending December ..

vganesh Ji,

You are right.

[h=1]"Chennai floods to have material impact on Q3 revenues: TCS[/h]MUMBAI: Tata Consultancy Services has said that the floods in Chennai would impact its third quarter results despite taking several steps to mitigate the fallout from the worst rainfall the city has seen in more than a decade.
TCS has one of its largest delivery centres in Chennai where it has more than 65,000 employees.

TBs in chennai IT companies would have to move to other cities reducing the TB population further.

Probably it is good for them as they will get better exposure to others in india.

It is not wise to have industrial hubs in mega cities on the coast.

Mumbai , kolkatta, chennai can remain as capital of states.

Others can shift to satellite town/cities on high ground.

Even delhi because of pollution fears is trying to relocate industries or shutting down polluting ones.

TBs in Chennai IT companies know pretty well how to get over such crisis and they don’t require anyone's serious advice/suggestion.

Now they had an opportunity to understand how their neighbouring State fellowmen come to their aid in such times of crisis unlike others who merely preach.

It is certainly wise to have industrial hubs in mega cities on the coast which has an added advantage of a harbor to avail Exim trade benefits.

TBs living in Delhi may think about relocating to rural areas considering the polution level, in the interest of their own health benefits in the long run.

[h=1]Economic impact of #ChennaiFloods: auto industry to be worst hit[/h][h=4] The numbers[/h]
  • Chennai accounts for 25% of India's automotive production - of cars, bikes and parts
  • The auto industry contributes more than 40% to the country's manufacturing sector
[h=4]The impact[/h]
  • India exported 3.5 million vehicles in 2014-15. This is set to fall drastically due to the Chennai floods
  • Even for domestic consumers, the delivery periods will get longer and service will also suffer
[h=4]More in the story[/h]
  • Which auto companies will be worst affected?
  • What are the financial implications of the floods on the industry?

Employees in IT companies are only bonded labour of their employers.

During the recent rains bus loads were transported to bangalore creating a hotel crisis there.

IT is governed by only one rule , profits due to arbitrage in wages in india and foreign countries.

TB next generation would be very happy to run away from chennai. Freedom at last.

UP govt responded better to chennai rains than neighbouring states by offering Rs 25 crores.

Auto majors will also have second thoughts With AP nearby waiting to grab business .

Kammas understand business

Port connectivity is meaningless for IT

If AP capital nearby or telengana offers a better deal, the IT majors will run away.

They go wherever there is a better deal.

Chennai has least pollution among the metros...Chennai will become better with higher awareness and better planning and excecution to avoid flooding..All cities like Mumbai, Surat have recovered from the crisis( flooding of 2005 flooding and plague epidemic in 1994 respectively)..May be if there is a high intensity earthquake in Delhi it will learn the hard way!

It is meaningless to talk of pollution when one is drowning in water.

Relocating half a lakh and more in relief camps is a gigantic task.

Besides business is guided by sentiment.

Who would set up business in a place when there is fear of water playing on their minds.

Indus valley civilisation and indo gangetic plains got destroyed by flowing rivers to never recover. We still talk of glory of pataliputra and see present status of patna.

Many parts of bihar get affected by floods in their rivers and most of their youngsters head to delhi and mumbai for education and jobs.

It is possible that chennai might meet the same fate if the rains get repeated one more year.

Delhi is unlikely to do anything about earth quakes Unless a strong one hits.Delhi door asth for quakes.

We have a guardian saint in hazrat nizamuddin darga guarding delhi.

Only a perverted mind will define them as bonded labours, but for Chennaites, they are real internet warriors.

Help pours in via social media

Meet some of the Internet warriors who stayed calm during the crisis and became the first line of defense.

For the last two days there has been a force in Chennai more powerful than the rains pounding the city. Social media. While bridges collapsed, floodgates opened and people were confined to their homes, citizens came together on social media – Twitter and Facebook – to coordinate efforts to send or seek help with accommodation, food and rescue relief.

The people behind the joint effort at Chennairains.org, a Google spreadsheet listing helpline numbers, aid offers and requests, rescue requests, volunteer details and accommodation details has been, and is still being, widely shared, so that people can fill in details or provide necessary information to volunteers. The volunteers have been working all night – people from other cities and countries pitched in and took turns to stay awake. Soon, Twitter India shared the link and The Hindu hosted it on their website. Some volunteers kept track of certain hashtags including #chennairains, #chennaivolunteer, #chennairescue and #chennairainshelp.

Facebook activates ‘Safety’ button for Chennai floods

Facebook_2643745f.jpg

Once the user clicks "Yes, let my friends know," the tool automatically notifies his/her Facebook friends.

Social networking giant Facebook has activated its Safety Check feature in Chennai that has witnessed the heaviest rainfall seen in a century.
Facebook, which has its second largest userbase in India, activated the feature to allow people mark themselves as “safe” from the floods.
Once the user clicks "Yes, let my friends know", the tool automatically notifies his/her Facebook friends.

Google has also posted a link on its homepage called ’Resources for the Chennai floods’, which provides details about relief camps and updates people about the situation in the city.

Chennai residents have been tormented by the heavy downpour of the last three days with excessive discharge of water last night from Chembarambakkam lake on the outskirts, flooding new areas in the city.

It is also desirable to review whether IT companies play any major role in the development of State, in general, and upliftment of poor people, in particular. If the answer is not very positive, then relocation to some other place is not a bad thing for the State.

It is meaningless to talk about drowning now, since the water has already receded but it is very relevant to talk about pollution of Delhi because of anguish and outrage over its rising level which is appalling, especially when there are reports of Norway considering classifying the city as a “hardship” and a Court describing Delhi as a “Gas chamber”.

We exhibited solidarty and help poured from all sides.

But in your case, it is a fact that Delhi adds not less than 1400 new vehicles to its already well congested streets everyday. There is no stopping and these vehicles are the prime contributors for the pollution, besides the ever growing industries and factories.

Please see that you don’t lose the battle against your fight against pollution, by paying more attention on already receded flood situation at Chennai.lol

BTW when are you going to get your clean air? Any idea? Think about it?

Averting the relocation of IT industries from Chennai, what efforts the State Govt. has taken ?
At least the Chief Minister should open her mouth and talk in assuring tone.

There are lot of advertisements now coming up about properties in Perumabakkam, Manapakkam etc which were submerged in the deluge! Are the property prices coming down in Chennai?

Chennai will be a heaven for Delhiites to get freed from smog and intense cold wave!
vganeji
