CHENNAI: DMK president M Karunanidhi, known for being a rationalist, was criticised after a video of him playing host to priests from Tirupati Tirumalai Devasthanam chanting Vedic hymns, appeared online.
The meeting at the patriarch’s Gopalapuram residence on Wednesday came after the TV channel run by the devasthanam, Sri Venkateshwara Bhakti Channel, wanted the rights to air the Telugu version of the television series on Saint Ramanuja that Karunanidhi penned. The series is currently running on the party’s channel, Kalaignar TV.
Critics pointed out that the party leadership has always maintained a distance from religious matters, particularly the Brahminical practices, which is being softened now. His son and DMK treasurer, MK Stalin, has also been criticised for visiting some famous temples during his Namukku Naame campaign trail across the State.
The party faithful countered the criticism saying that amid growing intolerance in the country, Karunanidhi has shown the way for tolerance and civility during his meeting by allowing Vedic recital at his home.
“It shows our leader’s tolerance of the beliefs of others and his manners not to hurt them in any way. When the priests are reciting mantras, it will be uncivilised and rude to stop them. They were his guests and he does not hurt anyone’s feelings,” said one of the party functionaries. The party functionary went on to recall an instance when Hindu Munnani leader Rama Gopalan wanted to present the DMK leader a copy of the Bhagavad Gita. Karunanidhi invited him to his house and graciously received it.
In return, Karunanidhi presented to the Hindutva leader a copy of Dravidar Kazhagam leader, K Veeramani’s ‘Geethaiyin Marupakkam’ (The other side of Gita), which criticised Gita as a literature dividing people into four categories and preaching discrimination.
