Some are born with great talent...and all that is required is encouragement and support.

The little girl from Mahabalipuram who is taking Indian skateboarding scene by storm

Eight-year-old Kamali Moorthy, a child prodigy, is the only girl skateboarder and surfer in her hamlet in Tamil Nadu.

It was 3pm on a Friday. The air was hot and salty, and Fisherman Colony, a seaside village near Mahabalipuram in Tamil Nadu, was baking in the afternoon sun. Seemingly oblivious to the heat, a few children are skateboarding on a quirky new skating ramp set up in the street. Among them was an arresting sight – a small girl effortlessly navigating the concrete slopes of the ramp, setting herself apart from the rest.

With her short hair tied up and two front teeth still taking shape, 8-year-old Kamali Moorthy grins as she drops into the ramp from the granite coping and rolls down the slopes, as if she was born to do so. And this is indeed the common belief among many people, from tourists to the fisher folk, who adore Kamali, the only girl skateboarder and surfer in the hamlet.

Kudos to Bangalore City Police for acting so smartly with swift and tact.

He stole a phone, saw nudes, then blackmailed medico for sex; caught

A youth working as a drone pilot has fallen prey to an attention diverter’s hoax when he was driving his car near RV College on Mysore Road. The accused stole his phone and hacked it, and later began chatting with his ex-girlfriend. He then blackmailed her to have sex with him, by threatening to upload her nude photos including intimate videos of her and her boyfriend.

The accused also demanded Rs 20 lakh to delete the photos. When the couple approached the police for help, they formed a team of 10 policemen and managed to trap the accused.

The victim, Keshav Vijayam, 26, is a resident of Lalbahadur Shastri Nagar. After he lodged a complaint at the Kengeri police station, the police swung into action despite it being election results day, and managed to save the woman.

The incident happened on May 6, around 11.15 pm, when Keshav was driving his car towards the city from Mysore Road. When he was passing RV College, he noticed around three people, one of whom stopped his car and showed him a hub cap. Since Keshav couldn’t understand what he was saying, he got down from his car to find the accused asking him if he had lost one of his hub caps. When Keshav returned after checking if all his hub caps were in place, he realised that his car keys were missing from the ignition. Though he was able to find them in the back seat of his car, he realised that his mobile phone was missing from the dash board.

Nipah virus scare in God’s Own country

    Health Department issues alert

6 Nipah virus deaths in Kerala: Bat-infested house well of first victims sealed

A nurse who used to work at the Taluk Hospital in Perambra was cremated on Monday morning, hours after she died at 2 am
With the northern part of Kerala gripped by fear over the rare Nipah virus, the health department has issued a high alert throughout the state.

Health Minister KK Shylaja said that six deaths due to the virus had been confirmed and that the government was setting up more facilities at the Kozhikode Medical College, as that was the district with maximum fatalities so far.

The minister had an evaluation meeting with the Director of Health Services, Dr RL Saritha, and experts from the Kasturba Medical College, Manipal.

Authorities have found that there had been bats in the well located in the house of the family at Changaroth panchayat in Kozhikode district which lost three members to the Nipah virus. The well which had been the source of water for the family has now been sealed, the minister informed.

Siblings Mohammed Sadik (26) and Mohammed Salih (28), sons of Valachuketti Moosa, died on May 5 and May 18 respectively. Moosa’s brother Moideen’s wife Mariam (50) passed away on May 19. Moosa (62) is in a critical condition while Atifa (19), Salih’s fiancée, is undergoing treatment at a private hospital.

Direct contact with infected pigs, other infected animals, or through contaminated fruits (half-eaten fruits left by fruit bats), and even direct contact with sick persons have been cited as the underlying cause of outbreaks.

    Death of nursing staff

A nurse who used to work at the Taluk Hospital in Perambra was cremated on Monday morning, hours after she died at 2 am. The dead body of the nurse, identified as Lini, was not handed over to her family; instead hospital authorities cremated her body at an electronic crematorium. This was done as a precautionary measure to ensure that the virus did not spread further. Lini, a native of Chembanoda, had nursed a patient who died of Nipah fever.

Kudos to DRDO who have developed an all-weather medium-range surface-to-air missile.

It appears that there is a growing demand from overseas nations in procuring this indigenously developed missile.

Demand for Akash missile high: DRDO

Coimbatore: Several countries have evinced interest in procuring the indigenously developed Akash missile, a top Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) official said here on Saturday.

There is a growing demand for the Akash, an all-weather medium-range surface-to-air missile, and many nations have shown interest in it, DRDO Chairman S Christopher told reporters here.

Developed by the DRDO, the Akash missile system has the capability to neutralise aerial targets such as fighter jets, cruise missiles and air-to-surface missiles as well as ballistic missiles.

Talks were underway with the countries and “it (orders for the missile) will come, “Christopher said without divulging further details.

To a query on the allocation for research and development, he said this year the organisation has a budgetary allocation of Rs 2,000 crore.

Christopher, who was here to participate in a function, also said there were export inquiries for the BrahMos missile.

NINE DEAD IN POLICE FIRING IN TOOTHUKUDI AS STERLITE PROTESTS TURN VIOLENT

Nine people, including a girl, died on Tuesday in police firing after the ongoing anti-Sterlite protests turned violent with thousands of people from nearby areas allegedly attacking the District Collectorate demanding closure of the Vedanta Group-run company.

In the first major incident of police firing in Tamil Nadu on protesters and resultant deaths, they first fired teargas shells and carried out baton charges to bring the protesters under control but passions were high.

Police then resorted to firing as thousands of people gathered in defiance of prohibitory orders on the 100th day of their agitation ever since the company announced the expansion plans of the four lakh tonne per annum Sterlite Copper project and attacked the Collectorate.

The area around the Collectorate resembled a battle-zone with the protesters setting vehicles afire and attacking policemen with stones. Plumes of black smoke emanated from the protest site. Police retaliated in a bid to bring the situation under control.

Among those who died were identified as Antony Selvaraj, Kandiah, Gladson, Jayaram, Maniraj, Tamilarasan, Shanmugham and Venista. At least 60 people, including policemen and journalists covering the protests, were injured in the clashes. Many of them were admitted to hospitals for treatment as their condition was serious.

Among the injured was a 16-year-old schoolgirl who was waiting for her bus when she was hit by a bullet.
