    Manik Sarkar's left front grapples.....

The Last Red Citadel Crumbles To Dust

Tripura was the last bastion of the Marxists (discounting Kerala that alternates between left and Congress rule). They were in power there for 25 long years since 1993. Before that, too, Tripura was ruled by the left for 10 years from 1978. The red fortress was, till even a year ago, deemed impregnable. Very few believed that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) could even put up a fight in Tripura and most used to peremptorily dismiss the BJP as a marginal player in that remote northeastern state bordering Bangladesh.

But the BJP has fought valiantly against all odds and demolished the red citadel, grounding it to dust. This is not only a crushing blow to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), but a spectacular victory for the BJP. Fighting the CPI(M) is, all said and done, not like fighting any other party. The CPI(M) in Tripura, like in West Bengal earlier, was a strong cadre-based party which didn’t mind going to extreme lengths to subdue opposition. It was entrenched in Tripura and had infiltrated into and rooted itself in the state bureaucracy and the police force, which used to function more like adjuncts of the CPI(M).

For the BJP, it was a multi-pronged battle that it had to wage. Staving off the CPI(M)’s cadre was only one part of the battle. The terror tactics of the CPI(M) had benumbed the people of Tripura with fear. Workers and leaders of the Congress, which was the major Opposition force in the state till three years ago, used to be regularly beaten up, rendered homeless, and even murdered. So widespread was the fear that people would even baulk at the idea of attending rallies of Opposition leaders. To take that fear out of people’s minds and convince them that the BJP could not only stand up to, but protect the people from, the Marxist terror machinery was a huge task.

The Idol Wing of Crime Investigation Department (CID), Tamil Nadu police, has filed a case with Thanjavur West Police Station that panchalohaidols of king Raja Raja Chola and his wife Logamadevi have gone missing.

The Inspector General of the wing, A G Pon Manickavel, on Friday (2 March) filed the complaint on the idols, which were donated by king “Poigai Naadu Kizhavan Aadhithan Suriyanagiya Thennavan Moovenda Vellan” to king Raja Raja Chola 1,000 years ago when the Thanajvur Brihadisvara Temple was under construction.

The Times of India reported that the value of the king’s idol was Rs 60 crore and that of the queen, Rs 40 crore. The daily quoted Thajavur Superintendent of Police T Senthilkumar as saying that the idols could have been stolen 50 years ago. Investigation to recover the idols has begun.

The theft of the idols came to light only recently after former Tamil Nadu Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowment Department Minister V V Swaminathan filed a case in the Madras High Court on the two missing idols and sought their recovery. The case was filed in November 2016. The Tamil Nadu Idol Wing took cue from the case filed by the former minister and began investigations.

Heli-taxi service from Bengaluru airport to Electronic City to take off on Monday

Users will be able to fly from the airport to Electronic City in 15 minutes, a journey that usually takes two hours by road.

Bengaluru’s helicopter taxi service is all set to take off on Monday with users able to fly from Kempegowda International Airport to Electronic City in 15 minutes, a journey that usually takes two hours by road.

The heli-taxi service is being introduced in the city by Thumby Aviation, which will operate two Bell 407 helicopters, that can seat up to six people.

The service will operate in two shifts during peak business hours – from 6.30 to 9.30 am and from 3.00 to 6.15 pm. Currently the service is only available between Bengaluru airport and Electronic City, while HAL Airport will be added as an additional destination in the next two weeks.

Speaking to TNM, an airport spokesperson said, “The shuttle service will start from the airport to Electronic City. The city has close to 90 helipads awaiting DGCA approval. As some of those get cleared, then we will slowly expand the service to other areas. The process of schedules, identifying locations and programs will begin now.”

Lenin Statue in Tripura Teared Down Two Days After Lotus Blooms

Barely 48 hours after the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won the mandate in Tripura, a video emerged showing right-wing supporters tearing down a statue of Vladimir Lenin, a communist revolutionary, in Belonia town of the state.

The video shows the statue, located in the College Square of the town, being teared down by people wearing ‘Chalo Paltai’ T-shirts and chanting “Bharat mata ki jai.”

The national general secretary and northeast in-charge of the BJP, Ram Madhav, who is credited for the party’s win in Tripura, instead of condemning it, voiced his support towards the act of vandalism as a move towards change.

'Make in India'…boost to India’s economics..

    Samsung to export India-made phones

NEW DELHI: In a boost to the government’s ambitious ‘Make in India’ programme, Korean major Samsung plans to start export of India-made smartphones to Europe, Middle-East and Africa very soon. The company is more than doubling its production capacity to 12 million (1.2 crore) devices per month against nearly 5 million (50 lakh) at present.

The move comes at a time when Samsung faces one of its toughest periods in India after a high-pitched competitive onslaught by Chinese brands, particularly Xiaomi, in the mid-end of the market, and global rival Apple in the premium-end.

Samsung seems unfazed by the competitive pressures, and is rather preparing for a fresh wave of growth in India, which has emerged as the second-biggest smartphone market in the world (behind China). “We are going to boost our engagement in India further, and are making fresh investments of around Rs 5,000 crore to double the installed capacity. This should be completed by the end of this year,” a company source told TOI.

“Apart from displaying our seriousness when it comes to the Indian market, the move also highlights the capability of the factories here in producing high-quality products that meet global benchmarks,” the source said. Higher production numbers will also help realise further economies of scale, and thus boost price competitiveness.

The risk factor is, in case of failure to repay the loan, the lender has the authority to repossess the property and recover the dues by selling it.

Why loan against property can be risky

Most borrowers of loans against property pin hopes on future cash flows from their business, but in case of failure to repay the loan, the lender can repossess the property and sell it.

Sanjay Kumar Singh finds out more.

Delinquencies in loan against property (LAP) are on the rise.

According to Crif Highmark, one of the country's four credit bureaus, the total LAP portfolio of banks, non-banking finance companies
(NBFCs) and housing finance companies (HFCs) stood at Rs 3.7 lakh crore in September 2017.

Non-performing assets had risen to 3.75 per cent in September 2017 from 2.98 per cent a year earlier.

Rating agency Crisil too expects delinquencies in the LAP segment for non-banking finance companies to rise by 70 basis points to 3.3 per cent by the end of this financial year.

Is there any provision in the constitution prohibiting a state from having its own flag?

Will the GOI approve this proposal of State’s having their own flag to start with Karnataka…??
Karnataka flag unveiled: Yellow, white and red with state emblem in the middle

If adopted with clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Karnataka will be the second state after Kashmir to have an official state flag.
    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The colours selected represent different things – yellow symbolises forgiveness, white for peace and red for bravery.
Karnataka Cabinet approved the official state flag on Thursday – a tricolour of yellow, white and red sports the ‘ganda bherunda’ in the middle.

At around 10.30 am on Thursday, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah called a meeting of all the flag committee members and over 50 writers, experts and representatives of pro-Kannada organisations to discuss the issue. The committee formed to design the flag was headed by eminent Kannada scholar Hampa Nagarajaiah.

"The members of the committee explained to all the activists, writers and experts the significance of the flag and its meaning. After a unanimous decision, the design for the flag was agreed upon," SG Siddaramaiah, Chairman of the Kannada Development Authority, told TNM.

The flag design will now be sent to the Centre for its approval, following which it can be unfurled in state meetings.

Sources said the colours selected represented different things – yellow symbolises forgiveness, white for peace and red for bravery. The emblem will the printed in black and white on the central white stripe.

The state emblem of Karnataka is based on the kingdom of Mysore and is carried on all Government of Karnataka correspondence.

It has the Sarnath lion symbol which is popular across India, below which is a red shield with the ganda bherunda. On either side are two lion-elephants called ‘sharabha’, a mythological creature believed to be 8-legged possessing the powers of lions and elephants.

INDIA TO BUILD 50,000 HOUSES FOR QUAKE VICTIMS IN NEPAL

To assist earthquake-ravaged Nepal in its reconstruction effort, India today pledged to build 50,000 houses in its two worst hit districts.

India signed an agreement with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to build 50,000 homes for quake victims in Gorkha, the epicentre of 2015 earthquake, and the Nuwakot district.

Under the project, 26,912 home owners will be benefited in Gorkha and 23,088 homeowners in Nuwakot, according to Indian Embassy sources.

Socio-technical teams from UNDP and UNOPS will assist home owners to reconstruct their houses as per the Government of Nepal's earthquake resistant norms.

They will also guide them through the inspection and certification process at different stages of construction so as to enable them to have access to various tranches of housing grant.

Under the agreement, India will give USD 8.41 million to the UNOPS and USD 7.41 Million to the UNDP for the reconstruction of the 50,000 homes.

The massive earthquake in Nepal in April, 2015 created havoc in the Himalayan nation, killing over 10,000 people and injuring nearly 22,000 people. Gorkha and Nuwakot were the worst-hit districts.
