Deepavali: This festival will be celebrated in the month of iypasi naraka chathurdasi thithi preceding amavasai. , with everyone in the family taking oil bath bfore

sun rise. It is the belief among hindus taking oil bath in the morning on deepavali day will be equivalent the benefits derived by taking bath in the ganges. In almost in all

houses , the following items will be prepared.

Ukkarai and vellai appam is a must for madurai district people. Idly chutney, sambar , bajji, kesari,laddu,oma podi, mixture, kaaraapoondhi,murukku, mysur pahu, rava

laddu, barbi, pathusha, rasagulla,gram flour laddu, bombay halva,etc; will be prepared. To serve during lunch poli or jilebi or pathir peni will be prepared.

For those belonging to thanjavur district, after oil bath they have to take deepavali lehyam and then only they will take sweets and savoury. Idly is not a must for this

district people,. Menu: Payasam, curd pachadi, sweet kosumalli, salt kosumalli, porial, kootu, more kulambu, boiled dhall, aamavadai, pitly, rasam,curd, fried applam, chips.

For thalai deepavali , deepavali festival within one year after marriage the son-in- law will be invited for deepavali. In swome families, the night before deepavali will

be celebrated with dinner with payasam bajji, fried applam etc; in some houses such items will be prepared only when the son-in-law of the family is taking part in the

function.

If geysers are not available, wash and clean the oven on which the hot water is to be prepared for the deepavali bath , a day before function. Clean also the boiler ,smear it

with lime to the width of the finger ,applying four or five kumkum dots, fill it with water and keep it on the oven. Take the required quantity of gingilly oil , omum ,

turmeric,pepper and betel leaves , heat it and keep aside.

Wash the house and decorate with rangoli pattern, with red oxide. Draw kolam in the pooja room. Keep on a plate, thaamboolam, plantain fruits, flowers, sandal paste,

kumkumam, gingilly oil prepared as above, hot water in a vessal, soap nut powder, scented powder etc; keep in another plate crackers etc; take one more big plate and place on it

the new dresses purchased for the members of the family.after applying sandal paste and kumkumam on the border edges. Place sweets and savory, lehyam.pancha pathra uthirini with

water.

On the early morning of the deepavali day, light the oven containing boiler or vessal, with water. Light kuthu vilakku or oil lamp in the pooja room. Arrange mats or

wooden planks, facing east. Ask the members of the family to be seated on the planks or mats facing east. After offering neivedhyam with the items etc., kept in the pooja room

,give one plantain fruit each to the members of the family. Follow this with thaamboolam. In thanjavur district this is not the custom.

Elders in the house will then apply gingilly oil on the heads of the younger members. For this, the elders will dip three fingers of theirs in the oil, which wil be applied

as above. , then, the members will have their oil bath,, have break fast and then elders will give them their dresses and then wear new dresses.all these depend on one"s custom

and tradition. For thalai deepavali son in law and daughter will sit on planks facing east and mother and father in law will apply gingilly oil on the head of daughter and son

in law.

Then they will take oil bath, they both will be given by elders new clothes to wear. Then both of them will take lehyam, sweets and savory, and the father in law will gift

to son in law gold ring or minor chain or both.

In some houses, as soon as the members wake up, some crackers will be burst. The remaining crackers will be burst after taking bath. In some houses after oil bath, after

wearing new clothes, sweets and savories will be taken. Some will take oil bath, have breakfast and then wear new clothes, depending upon the customs and traditions of their

family.


In some years amavasai thithi will also fall on deepavali day. Those who have to perform tharpanam will have a second bath and do the pithru tharpanam and have light tiffin

at night.

Karthikai deepam:
This year it falls on 17-11-2013. Normally, this festival will be celebrated on the full moon day in the tamil month of karthigai.with the star kruthikai coinciding with

that. Some times the star will fall on some other day also.in such cases the festival will be celebrated separately in different dates by saivates and vaishna vates.in some

houses the karthigai deepam lamp will be lit only on thiruvannamalai deepam day. Some people on sarvaalaya deepam day.in some houses the festival will be celebrated on the day

when the deepam is lit in the local siva temples.

In the morning , decorate the the house with rangoli after cleaning and washing the house and its frontage etc; the wooden planks, on which the mud lamps etc; are to be

placed before lighting the same and the other places in the house can be decorated with kolam etc; in the afternoon itself. It is the customery for the sumangalis and female

children in the house to take oil bath in the morning.

Menu for lunch: Porial,kootu, more kulambu, payasam, fried applam,amavadai./ulundu vadai; raqsam,curd, cooked rice, cooked dhall.. It is customary in all districts to

have puffed rice flakes sweetened with jaggerysyrup,appam, plantains, flower, thaamboolam. In thanjavur district puffed paddy sweetened with jaggery syrup, will also be

prepared.in some houses jaggery adai will also be prepared.

Fry lightly rice, red gram dhall and bengal gram dhall.soak, rinse and remove stonesand grind into a mass. When ground well add grated coconut , required quantity of

jaggery and four cardamoms and grind again.add oil or ghee in an adai pan or a shallow frying pan and prepare small adais nput the adais in the pan and remove when cooked.

In thanjavur district puffed paddy and puffed beaten rice flakes will be prepared into laddus. Those belonging to madurai district will not prepare laddus but will keep the

poris as lumps.

Take one wooden plank and decorate it with rangoli after cleaning and washing the plank as well. Purchase some new mud ahals and add it with the old ones in the house.

Clean the mud lamps with water and wipe it dry. Keep the lamps arranged on the planks. Fill the lamps with oil.take a pair of oil wicks made of cloth or cotton yarn.twist it

together into one. Apply sandal paste and kumkumam on both sides of the wick and put it in the clay lamps. Repeat this with all lamps.

The brass kuthu vilakku and other brass oil lamps in the house should be cleaned well, applied with sandal paste and kumkumam and kept ready,after filling them with oil.

Never use ground nut oil.the lamps and pictures of the deities in the pooja room may be decorated with flowers. After lunch , prepare the vadai items etc; to be offered for

the pooja. In the evening after five o clock . If there is no rahu kaalam. Light the kuthu vilakku and all other mud lamps. By the chanting this slogam.

"keetaha, pathangsaha, mashakaascha vrukshaha jalae sthalae yae vicharanthee jeevaha dhrustwaa pradeepam na cha janma bhaaginaha bavanthi nithyam swapasaha he

vipraaha."lit the incense sticks and do neivedhyam, and camphor aarthy. In some houses regular aarthy will also be taken. Swicth on the electric lights .

The lighted mud lamps can be arranged at the frontage of the house.brass lamps must be placed inside the house.see that the lighted lamps are kept continuosly burning to

the extreme possible. Add more oil that the lamps must be kept burning upto 7 p.m. Children will burst crackers when the lamps are lit. New dresses may be got for this

festival if feasible.

In the next night light a lesser number of of mud lamps, offer plantain fruit and thaamboolam as neivedhyam and keep the lighted lamps both in front and backyard of the

house.

During the first year after marriage , the girls will be given for "thalai karthikai" as seer pori and vadai with thenkuzhal or manuval. And thaamboolam, fruits,and

flowers and manjal and kumkumam. Kuthu vilakku and mud agals and some brass vilakku.

Kaarthika month aakaasa deepam. From 4-11-2013 to 2 -12-2013. As per nirnaya sindhu -146: Kaarthikae thila thailaena saayangaalae samaagathey aakaasa deepam yo

dhadhyaath maasamakam harim prathi mahathim sryamapnothe roopa sowbhaagya sambadham.---chaandramaana maadham.on these thirty days during sunset time lit one lamp with eight

wicks and by adding gingilly oil, place it in a highest place in , near by temple or in your house"s upstairs above water tank.or highest place in your house. Place one savukku

maram and lit the lamp at the top of savukku maram.

The light from this lamp must spread to eight directions. So you have to put eight wicks. On 4th november evening go to a temple and do sankalpam there "" aham sakala

paapa kshaya poorvakam sri radha dhaamodhara preethyea adhya aarabhya kaarthika amavaasya paryantham yadha shakte aakaasa deepa dhaanam karishyae." and then place a mud agal

with gingilly oil and with 8 wicks lit it and place it in the highest place in your house or in the temple daily after sunset for 30 days saying this slokam

dhaamodharaaya nabasi thulaayaam lolaya saha pradheepam they prayaschaami namo nandhaaya vedhasay ( nirnaya sindhu). And do namaskaaram. If it is not possible do it

atleast for three days on 30th and 1st dec. And 2nd december.by this maha vishnu will bless you along with lakshmi devi.

Yama dweethiyai.

On 5-11-2013 after deepavali dwithiyai thithi is called yama dwithiyai.yamuna devi and yaman are the children of sun god. Brahmaanda puranam says "snehaena bhagini hasthath

bhokthavyam pushty vardhanam dhaanaani cha pradhey yaani bhaginibyo vishesathaha." brothers should go to their sister"s house with gifts and take food there.sisters must call

their brothers on this day for meals."yaa thu bhojhayathey naari braatharam yugmake thithou archayech chaapi thaamboolair na saw vaidhavyam avaapnuyaath."

sisters will never become widow if they give food and clothes to their brother on yama dwithiyai day.. Brotheres due to unavoidable circumstances are not able to go their

sister"s house maysend money to their sisters. Only son no sisters then can go to their brother"s daughter house or mother"s brother"s daughter house on yama dwithayai day.

Skandha sashty


skanda shashty on 8-11-2013. From 4th november to 8th november you may have fasting for five days and do pooja to murugan or chant skantha shasty kavacham, kandar alankaram,

thiru pugal, etc; do 16 upachaara poja daily and do sahasra nama. Ashtothra , thrisathy archanas. Vaalmiki says in ramayanam " bhakthascha kaarthikeyae kaakustha bhuvi

maanavaha.aayushmaan puthra pouthraischa skandha sawlokyathaam vrajeth."

have fasting atleast on skanda shasty day. Chant his slokams subramanya bhujangam etc;



gopaashtami or goshtaashtami

this falls on 10-11-2013. Smruthy gousthupam says: Kaarthikeyaashtami suklagyeyaa gopaashtami budhaihi thathra kuryaath gavaam poojaam gograasam go pradhakshinam."

karthikai month sukla patcha ashtami is called gopashtami. On this day -cow with calf- have pooja and give them agathy grass and give water to drink and do sixteen pradhakshinam

and namaskaaram. You will get the blessings of god says mathsya puraanam.

Yaagya valkya jayanthi

karthika sukla patcha dwadasi is called yogeeswara dwadasi. Birth day of yaagya valkiyar. This falls on 14-11-2013. Chant this slokam:' vandheham mangalaath maanam

bassvantham vedha vigraham yaagya valkiyam muni sreshtam jishnum hari hara prabham jithenthriyam jithakrotham sadhaa dhyaana paraayanam. Aanandha nilayam vandhey yogaanandha

muneesvaram. On 14-11-2013 this year.

Thulasi brindaavana pooja on 14-11-2013.

Iypasi month sukla patcha dwadasi thithi on this day thulasi married maha vishnu. On this day do 16 upachara pooja to thulasi plant. Place the thulasi in a mud pot and

and place a nelli sapling near it. Do aavahanam for maha vishnu in nelli sapling and do aavaahanam on thulasi plant for thulasi. Neivedhyam : Maha neivedhyam, thaamboolam, and

fruits. Sumangalis may do daily thulasi pooja. Do not prick thulasi leaves from this thulasi plant. Prick from other thulasi plant thulasi leaves for doing pooja. Daily pooja

neivedhyam: Milk,or drakshai,or kalkandu is enough.

On thulasi marriage day give as charity to the sastrihals/purohit payasam in a brass tumbler after his meals in your house.

On this day 14-11-2013 those who are having chathur maasya vratham must go to swami sannadhi and chant this slokam and finishing his chathur maasya vratham. " idham

vradham maya deva krutham preethyai thava prabho nunam sampoornathaam yaathu thwath prasaadhaath janardhana."chathur maasa vradha poorthy.

THIS FALLS ON 16-11-2013 THIS YEAR. THIS WILL FALL ON BHARANI STAR CHATHURDASI THITHI PREVIOUS DAY TO KAARTHIGAI DEEPAM. FOR THIS YOU HAVE TO PREPARE 365 WICKS .POUR GHEE

IN A VESSAL AND LIGHT IT IN THE HOUSE ITSELF OR IN A TEMPLE AFTER DRAWING A KOLAM ANDE PLACING THE DEEPAM ON IT.THEN PERFORM 16 UPACHAARA POOJA TO UNNAMULAIAMMAN SAMEDHA

ANNAMALAIYAR ON THIS LAMP WHEN ALL THE WICKS ARE EXHAUSTED , THE VESSEL WITH SUITABLE DAKSHINAI WILL BE OFFERED TO THE PANDIT.

IF NOT CONVENIENT THE WICKS MAY BE PLACED IN A MUD AGAL AND A SMALL BRAAS LAMP WITH SUITABLE DAKSHINAI CAN BE OFFERED TO THE PANDIT AFTER FEEDING HIM IN YOUR HOUSE.

KARTHIKAI DEEPAM.

THIS FALLS ON 17-11-2013 THIS YEAR. THE DAY FOLLOWING BARANI DEEPAM WILL BE OBSERVED AS KARTHIKAI DEEPAM. FOR THIS 1008 WICKS WILL BE PREPARED AND LIGHTED AS ABOVE WITH

GHEE OR GHEE MIXED WITH OIL. PERFORM 16 UPACHAARA POOJA TO MAHA VISHNU .SOME PEOPLE WILL DO BHARANI DEEPAM TO MAHA VISHNU POOJA AND KARTHIGAI DEEPAM TO SHIVA- ANNAMALIAR.AND

OFFERINGS MADE. AT NIGHT ONLY TIFFIN WILL BE TAKEN BY THOSE WHO ARE DOING BARANI DEEPA POOJA AND KARTHIKAI DEEPA POOJA.

KARTHIKAI DEEPA VRATHAM.

THIS VRATHAM SHOULD BE STARTED IN THE TAMIL MONTH OF IYPASI ON KARTHIKAI STAR DAY. THIS YEAR 21-10-2013 AND THE POOJA WILL BE DONE FOR THIRTY DAYS DAILY THAT IS UPTO 20-11

Kaala bairavashtami this year this falls on 25-11-2013.



Tamil month karthikai krishna patcha astami is the janmaashtami for kaala bairavar. Each month on krishna patcha ashtami is celebrated as bairavashtami. Bairavar was

born on barani star, so persons who have born on barani star may take bairavar pooja and vratham. On tamil month thai all tuesdays you may do bairavar pooja. If ashtami comes

on tuesday it is more powerful day to do pooja to bairavar. There are five sons for lord paramesvaran. Vinayakar, murugan, sashtha, bairavar and veera badhrar.

To kill the asuran anthakaasuran shiva produced bairavar by his shakthi and it bacame 8x8= 64 bairavas and killed anthakaasuran. These 64 bairavas married 64 yoginis. He

came from shiva"s thath purusha face. He removed one head of brahma. Kaala bairavar, maarthaanda bairavar, kshethra paalakar, vaduka bairavar, chathru samhaara bairavar,

swarnaakarshana bairavar --- in these names we doing pooja to him. In varanasi 64 bairavas are there.

He will be in there in the north east direction in shiva temples. " raktha jwaala jada dharam, sasidaram,rakthaanga thejo mayam,hastheyn soolam,kabaalam. Paasam,

damarum,lokasya raksha karam, nirvaanam, soona vaahananja anantha kolaahalam, vanthey bootha pisaasa natha vadukam kshethrasya paalam sivam."

have fasting on this karthikai krishna patcha ashtami do pooja to bairavar in the evening . Do not sleep at night. Read his stories and do bhajans at night. Neivedhyam;

curd rice, aval payasam, honey, sevvalai palam, after pooja do argyam with pure water chanting these4 slokas. If you are not able to do pooja you may do argyam only.

1. Bairavaa argyam gruhaanesa beema roopa avya yaanaga anena argya pradhaanena thusto bhava shiva priya bairavaaya namaha idhamargyam. 2. Sahasraakshi siro baaho sahasra

saranaajara gruhaanaargyam bairavedham sa pushpam parameswara bairavaaya namaha idhamargyam.3. Pushpaanjalim gruhaanesa varadho bava bairava punar argyam gruhaaneidham sa

pushpam yaathanaapaha bairavaya namaha idhamargyam.


Minimum 21 ashtami vradham must be done.continuously. Take bath early in the morning and take light tiffin in the day time. Complete starvation at night. Do pooja to

bairavar and place ulundhu vadai on bairavar neck. Or lit one deepam in bairavar sannadhi. On the next day morning have bath go to temple and pray there in sivan, ambal,

bairavar sannadhi and do annadhaanam to poor class people. Then come to house do your routine pooja at home and then take food.

Markazhi festivals.

Dhanur maadha pooja early in the moning. From 16-12-2013 to 13-1-2014.pooja should be performed early in the morning.chant thiruppavai 30 songs and thieuvempaavai,

thirupalli eluchchi etc. Early in the mornimg. " kodhandasthey savithari prathyoosha poojanath harehey sahasraabdhaarchan am phalam dhineynaikeyna labyathey. " in the month of

markali if you do one dsy pooja early int e morning you can get the fruit of one thousand years pooja phalan. So at least you may do on one day in the month of markali. Saala

grama /panchayathna pooja in your house.



On 16-12-2013 dathaathreyar jayanthi. On 17-12-2013 sarpa bali pooja uthsarjanam. Giving salt as charity to poor class people on this day will get you beutiful body in your

next birth.

0n 18-12-2013. Thiruvaathirai ; this festival is celebrated to worship lord nataraja the cosmic dancer. Normally this festival will fall in in the tamil month marghazhi on

the full moon day . For this ,the young girls of marriageable age will take oil bath to day. The house will cleaned and washed and decorated with rangoli kolams. After bath,

the girls will wear new clothes, and adorn them selves with flowers kumkumam etc.

In some houses , "kali""and elukari kulambu" kept in a vessel. And thaamboolam and fruits will be placed before god kuthuvilakku will be lit and these kali etc; will be

offered as neivedhyam. Followed by karpoora harathy. There is no restriction on this day. You may take food as usual. Along with this kali and kootu/kulambu. Drumsticks and

ribbed gourd are not used in this festival.

In some houses to the very number of sumangalis and girls small kolams will be drawn. Place a small plantain leaf above the kolam with nuni in tact on each rangoli kolam

and serve kali and kulambu. Place also thaamboolam and plantain fruit without touching kali ilai. Each one of the sumangalis and girls will stand before each leaf facing east

and offer prayers to lord nataraja. And offer neivedhyam. Then they should prostrate before god and after getting the blessings of elders in the house , eat the kali.

Even if there is no sumangalis and girls in the house kali and ezhu kari kulambu will be prepared and offered to god and they will eat it.

On 01-01-2014 is amavasai day. Birth day of lord hanuman. Do hanumar abhishegam and archanai and chant sthothrams on hanuman; hanuman chaalisa, hanuman kavacham and

sthothrams.

0n 05-01-2014 vyathee padham day.like 27 stars yogam is also in 27. Daily one will come. In this year for 12 months 13 vyadhee padham wil come . In the panchangam you can

see as "vya-sra" vyadheepadham sratham. We have to do at least tharpanam on these days every month. Do at least on this maha vyadheepadham day.we , senior citizens are having

diabetus,. And all days at night we have to take tiffin only. We may spend 30 minutes on this day for doing tharpanam.

Genarally charity given on full moon and new moon days will give 100 times more benefits. Charity on yughadhi and madha pirapu sankramanam will give 1000 times more

benefits. Charity given on sun/moon eclipse days and on vyadheepadham days will give countless benefits to the kartha.in this month it is called "dhanur vyatheepadham" or maha

vyadhee patham day. Doing pooja, japam, charity, homam on this day must give countless phalan to the kartha.

Pooja on this day: Take a copper plate add on it jaggery powder, on that, place gold or silver prathimai and do aavaahanam of vyadheepadha devathaa. Om vyadheepadha they

namaha is the manthram. Chanting this do aavaahanam and 16 upachaara pooja to the prathimai and chant 108 times om vyadhee padha they namaha. And give this one as charity. And

do anna dhaanam to poor class people. Puraanam says by doing like this you can get long life, success and will get all your likings.

You may start on this 5th january and do every month on vyadhee padham day pooja for 13 vyadhee padham day and can do udhyaapanam of this pooja by giving this prathimai to

sastrigals/purohit and do anna dhaanam, and do charity of bed and pancha dhaanam on udhyaapanam day. You will get all benefits.

You may feed on this day 6 or 12 purohits with vadai and payasam and they must be offered with woolen/ cloth shawl,dhothy, curd bath tied in a towel with thaamboolam and

suitable dhakshinai. Snaanam on this day before sun rise is also a must.

On 11-01-2014 vaikunda ekadasi and koodarai vellum.

In the month of markali on ekadasi day following amavasai . On that day elders will observe full fasting for the full day. Some will take chappathi, beaten rice flakes,

sathu maavu, ground nuts, sakra valli kilangu boiled etc. Only in day time. Will not sleep at night. Those who are wakiing on these nights should not sleep on the next day, day

time. They will never take curd or butter milk on fasting days.

Next day they will take food much earlier than the usual hours. On dwadasi day nelli mulli curd pachadi, agathi keerai porial, sundai kai (bitter nut) kulambu are the must.

Along with regular meals.

The book "thathva saaram" says: Ekaadasi samam kinjith paavanam na cha vidhyathey swarga moksha pradha aeshaw raajya puthra pradhaayini." the following four ekaadasis are

more important. Aani month sukla patcha ekadasi. Aavani sukla ekadasi. Karthigai sukla ekadasi and margali sukla ekadasi.

All gents and ladies from the age of 8 to the age of 80 are eligible to do this ekaadasi vrathm.
