Wikipedia is a standing example of what is possible when millions come together to share their knowledge without wanting anything in exchange. It is a standing example of collaborating with millions. Every article is scrutinized over by readers, and its democratic nature means that anyone can make edits. It is a testament to the staying power of Wikipedia that thousands of articles are published every day, and that it has become the go to source for just about anything.

Now, Wikipedia has reached the notable milestone of 5 million articles. It was written by notable Wikipedia-user Carl Liber, and is on the topic of ‘persoonia terminalis”,

To get a scale of Wikipedia’s size right now, here’s an interesting little tidbit: The entirety of Wikipedia would require a whopping 30 terabytes. 30 terabytes of text and images, which is simply mindblowing. 30 terabytes of free user-produced content, which is really amazing. In fact, Wikipedia gets over 500 million views every day, putting it right alongside bigwigs like Google and Facebook.

Right now, Wikipedia is the biggest single-source of human knowledge, but it still has a long way to go to encompass everything we know.

What do you think? Can Wikipedia every truly encompass everything we know?
