Why not implement prohibition: HC poser to TN Govt
Madras High Court today questioned the Tamil Nadu government as to why total prohibition could not be implemented in the State in the face of increasing number of accidents due to drunken driving.
When a petition filed by three individuals seeking compensation on a road mishap recently came up for hearing, Mr Justice N Kirubakaran ordered issuance of notice to the State government returnable by December 12, asking them as to why it could not implement total prohibition in the State like it was introduced in Gujarat.
Observing that the Government was getting a good revenue through liquor sales, the Judge sought to know why the government should not explore other options for revenue generation instead of getting it through liquor.
He asked the Government why punitive action was not taken against those cause fatal accidents during drunken driving.
Seeking to know why total prohibition could not be implemented and why the duty time of liquor shops should not be reduced, the Judge ordered issuance of notice to the Government seeking a reply.
