Who is Guru (From Guru Gita)

On the occasion of Guru pUrnima, few snippets from Guru Gita, in which Shiva instructs pArvati, who is 'Guru'..?

durlabham trisu lokesu tac zrnusva vadamy ahamguru brahma vina na anyau satyam satyam varAnane

That which is scarce in the three lokas, will tell you that, oh lovely faced, guru is none other than the brahman

veda sAstra purAnAni ca ithAsAdikAni camantra yantrAdi vidyAnAm mohano ucchAdanAdikamshaiva shAkta Agamadini hy anye ca bahavo matAuapabrahmsau samasthAnAm jivAnam bhrAmta cetasAm

The learning of Vedas, sAstras, purAnas, itihAsas, mantra, yantra, occults/tantric, shaiva agama, shakta agma and other multiple religions/paths and mixing up of all these, confuses the mind of jivas/beings.

japas tapo vratam tIrtam yajno dAnam tatha iva caguru tattvam avijnAya sarvam vyartam bhavet priye

Japa, tapa, vratam, tirtha yatras, yajna, dAna and all of these become wasted, if one is not aware of knowledge of guru tattvam.

guru budhhyAtmano na anyat satyam satyam varAnanetallabhArtam prayatna astu kartavya ca manishibhih

Guru i s none other than the Atman (that is inside us and controls our buddhi), that is the truth, o lovely faced, radiating woman, strive for those actions and thoughts/intelligence.

gUdha avidhya jagan mAya deha ca ajjAna sambhava
vijjAnam yat prasAdena guru shabdena kathayate

The avidhya that hides, covers the universal beings with mAya causes the ajjAna. ajjAna is 'not knowing'. avidhya is un-learning.We lose our learning due to the ways of the world and remain not knowing.

But guru narrates/speaks (kathayata). Guru's prasAd is vijnAna. vijjAna is Information/knowledge. Thus guru conveys information/knowledge vijjAna.
This information is received by our buddhi. But it is not just like that received. We need to do 'prayatna (strive) by actions (kartavya) and thoughts (maniSa).

Who is Guru..?

First Guru is brahman. Who is brahman..? Brahman is ati sRsti, the super creation (evolution) that evolves higher and higher order beings. Evolution (call it nature) is our Guru. That Guru, our evolution, speaks to us and gives us gift of information/knowledge.

We learn from evolution/nature. We get information/knowledge (vi-jnAna) from it. But we are also endowed with avidhya, the un-learning, due to which we lose the learning we have. We do not hold information/knowledge for long time.

But our guru is also the Atman that is inside us and that guides the buddhi in us. Atman makes our buddhi to receive the learning from nature that surrounds us. But we lose it due to avidhya, the un-learning.

But then we must do 'prayatna' (make effort) in terms of actions (kartavya) and thoughts (maniSa) to retain that information and knowledge.

Thus Brahman (evolution) and Atman (that controls our buddhi) are our original 'Gurus'.
