Origins Of Kannada And Tamil
According to linguists, both Kannada and Tamil have a common ancestor - that is proto-Dravidian. Both are major languages of the Dravidian family, but are believed to have been developed as separate branches of proto-Dravidian.
As the languages have a common ancestor, they share similar grammar structures, have same word formation and words with common etymology.
Was Kannada Born Out of Tamil?
There are multiple versions of the origin of both the languages. According to some prominent linguists, Kannada is one of the oldest Dravidian languages with a rich and documented history that dates back to over 2,000 years. Tamil, on the other hand, is the world's oldest living language, which is more than 2,500 years old.
The Halmidi inscription, dating back to 450 CE, is the oldest known Kannada-language inscription and is etched on a sandstone slab in the village of Halmidi, Karnataka.
Meanwhile, the earliest record of Tamil is marked by the Sangam literature. Sangam literature flourished in Tamilakam (southern India) between approximately 200 BCE and 300 CE. It's a rich collection of poems, epics, and grammar texts, reflecting themes of love, war, governance, and more.

Language has indeed been one of the sensitive issues in a multi-lingual country like India, with people taking pride in their mother tongue and tradition, but we seem to forget the basic essence, which is to connect and not be divided.

Tamil and Kannada are sibling languages, not parent-child.

Both share a common ancestor, but evolved independently.

Tamil has an earlier written tradition, but Kannada has a long and independent history.

The Dravidian family includes several other important languages like Telugu, Malayalam, and Tulu.
