Visvanatha-ashtakam

Universe can be divided into the ‘seen’ & ‘seer’. All forms that are ‘seen’ arise on energy. The ‘seeing’ arises on consciousness. Energy & Consciousness are formless (amUrti), witness(sAksi), as they are neither created nor destroyed. Though formless and witness, they ‘reflect’ in eight forms that create the Universe.

These eight forms (ashta-mUrtis) in which the formless, witness is reflected, becomes the basis of all Universe.

Shiva is Energy. Shiva is Consciousness. Since Shiva is the basis of ‘seer’ and ‘seen’, Shiva is called visva-nAtha, the lord of the Universe.
Visvanatha ashtakam alludes to these ‘ashta-murti’s. They are 1.mahAdeva 2. Bhava 3. Pazupati 4. Sharva 5. Ugra 6. Rudra 7. iSana 8.Bhima

The ashta-murtis in terms of energy manifestations are binding energies (that go missing to create bonds), mass (condensed energy), heat, light, sound, energy in electromagnetic interaction, weak interaction and strong interaction. The ashta-murtis in terms of consciousness are 1. Prakrti/cit 2. mahat 3. Ahamkara 4. tanmatras 5. pancha bhuta/prana 6. indriya of buddhi 7. indriya of karma 8. manas
