PM Modi may break protocol to receive President Obama

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi may break the protocol to receive American President Barack Obama, who is arriving here on a three-day state visit on January 25.

All arrangements for this high-profile visit are complete with national capital turning into a virtual fortress. As per the schedule, the US President will land in the world's most sophisticated aircraft, Air Force One, here on Sunday at 10 am.

The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), however, has appointed Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal as the 'Minister-in-Waiting' for Obama. As the ‘Minister-in-Waiting’, Goyal will accompany Obama during his stay in India.
Sources told to India TV that PM Modi may receive Obama at the airport.

From airport, he will be driven to the Rashtrapati Bhavan where he will be given Guard of Honour. Later he will visit the Rajghat to pay homage to Mahatma Gandhi.

On the same day, Modi and Obama will head for bilateral discussions at the Hyderabad House. Since Modi’s visit to the US in September last year, several meetings between the officials of the two countries have taken place in areas like defence, science and technology, counter terrorism, health, climate change and global trade.

On the January 26, Obama will be at the majestic Rajpath for more than two-hours as a Chief Guest, witnessing the Republic Day parade.

Over 45,000 security personnel are guarding roads and 15,000 CCTV cameras keeping a hawk's eye on various areas of the city.

On January 27, the two powerful leaders will together address the ‘Mann Ki Baat’ programme on radio.

On the same day, Obama, who will be accompanied by his wife Michelle Obama on trip to India, will visit the Taj Mahal in Agra.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Republic Day invitation took Barack Obama by surprise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Republic Day invitation took Barack Obama by surprise

Prime Minister Narendra Modi's invitation to President Barack Obama to be the first American leader to be the chief guest at India's Republic day took him by "some surprise" but he felt "personally honoured" to accept.

Given the "complicated history" between the two countries, "I think it took us by some surprise," Deputy National Security Adviser Ben Rhodes told reporters Tuesday in a conference call previewing the visit.
"There's a great affinity between the US and India and our people, but there's also a history that is complicated and that would have made it seem highly unlikely that a US President would be sitting with India's leaders at their Republic Day ceremony," he said.

"So I think President Obama was personally honoured to receive that invitation. I think he saw it as building on a successful summit with Prime Minster Modi," Rhodes said.

"And I think he sees this as a potentially transitional if not transformational moment for the relationship because we have a very strong and clear indication from India's leadership that they want to elevate our bilateral cooperation and our global cooperation."

Rhodes noted that Obama has not attended any national day ceremonies of any other countries, IANS reported.

"It's a unique event, but it's I think of great symbolic importance, given the US-India history and given the importance of Republic Day in India," he said. "And so that's why he was more than pleased to accept the invitation."

Although the White House had not scheduled the State of the Union message when the invitation from Modi came, it "certainly took the timing of the India trip into account in setting the date" and in its outreach to Congressional leaders.

Turning to the chemistry between Modi and Obama, Rhodes noted that in their first conversation after Modi's election, "they noted some similarities in terms of how their campaigns kind of changed the way in which politics was practiced in their respective countries."

"So I think what they shared off the bat was a similar experience of having run these very dynamic campaigns," he said. "And then during the Prime Minister's visit here I think they struck up a very good chemistry"
"So our hope is that the chemistry between the leaders and the personal relationship can lead to positive outcomes for our country," Rhodes said.

"And so it's worth the investment in the relationship with the country, the leader, and the people of India."
Turning to the President's security requirements, Rhodes noted that during his two inaugurations, Obama had substantial parades, in which he walked and then was on a reviewing stand for a period of hours in front of the White House.

That was the closest analogy to India's Republic Day, he said. But "There's not been a similar event that he's attended overseas in which he's done so, so it's unique in that case," Rhodes acknowledged.

Obama in India: US President, Michelle arrive Sunday, to visit Agra

New Delhi: US President Barack Obama will arrive in India Jan 25 along with his wife Michelle on a three-day state visit, described Thursday as the culmination of "qualitative reinvigoration" of bilateral ties since Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Washington last year.

Obama is expected to arrive at 10 a.m. Sunday on board the Air Force One.

External affairs ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin said Obama's visit, on the invite of Modi, is a "culmination of a qualitative reinvigoration of our ties following the meeting" between the two leaders in September last year in Washington.

He said since that meeting, both sides have "acted with alacrity to collaborate in common pursuits and traversed a transformative path".

Obama is the first US president to visit India twice during his tenure and the first to be the chief guest at the Republic Day celebrations.

Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal has been named the minister-in- waiting for the visit and would receive Obama at the airport as well as escort and assist him through the visit.

However, there was no clarification on whether Prime Minister Modi would go to the airport to receive the Obamas.

To a question if the prime minister would go to the airport, the spokesperson said that as per protocol the minister-in-waiting and senior ministry officials would be going.

After his arrival, Obama would be accorded a ceremonial reception in the forecourt of Rashtrapati Bhavan. He would then go to Raj Ghat to pay homage at the memorial of Mahatma Gandhi.

Obama would later head for Hyderabad House for bilateral discussions, which would be held in a restricted format. After the talks, Modi is hosting a luncheon for Obama and his delegation, during which delegation level talks would be held, the spokesperson said.

In the evening of Jan 25, Obama would meet President Pranab Mukherjee, who is to host a banquet in his honour.

On Jan 26, Obama would attend the Republic Day parade at Rajpath as the chief guest and later the At Home reception at Rashtrapati Bhavan hosted by the president.

In the evening, Obama and Modi would address business events.

Both Modi and Obama are to address the US-India Business Council (USIBC) comprising business persons from both countries that evening.

On the last day of the visit Jan 27, Obama would address a select audience at the Siri Fort auditorium and later proceed to Agra with Michelle Obama to see the Taj Mahal, before flying back to the US.

Supreme Court order might have influenced Obama to cut short trip -

President Barack Obama’s decision to cancel his visit to Agra came after Uttar Pradesh authorities insisted that he would not be allowed to use his armour-plated car to drive through the Taj Mahal’s eastern gate, government sources have told The Indian Express. The Secret Service, which protects President Obama, said having him travel into the complex in a battery-powered golf-cart posed an unacceptable security risk.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed all visitors to the Taj Mahal to disembark at the Shilpgram complex, 500 metres away, and board an electric vehicle to the entry gate.

Uttar Pradesh’s government, the sources said, refused to grant special access permission for President Obama’s bomb-proof personal vehicle, as well as almost 50 other vehicles carrying close-protection personnel and electronic security equipment.

“Basically”, a senior Home Ministry official said, “they told us to get an order from the Supreme Court, which was of course impossible in the time we had left”. Uttar Pradesh officials have offered no official comment on the issue.

The Secret Service’s 100-odd staff who were in Agra for the visit left their hotels on Friday night, after receiving instructions to stand down.

President Obama, government sources said, will now leave for Saudi Arabia early on January 27, to condole with the family of the recently-deceased Saudi monarch. Vice-President Joseph Biden had earlier been scheduled to undertake this duty.

An Open Letter To Obama Before He's Even Landed In India

An Open Letter To Obama Before He's Even Landed In India

President of the United States, Barack Obama, has cancelled his visit to the Taj Mahal in Agra. While this comes as more of a KLPD to the Uttar Pradesh government, let's look at why this a big deal.

This is just annoying. Just because someone can screw with you, doesn't mean they have to. This hurts, America, this hurts us dearly. To put things into perspective, here's a story you must know.

Think of the coolest person you know. Take your time and think hard. Now imagine this person accepting your invitation to come for a Thanksgiving dinner to your house. Losing your mind over the fact that this person is coming, you spend days going apeshit over what you should do to make him feel most welcome. Starting off with the house, you get the most expensive gadgets to clean every inch of it, making it look like the beautiful cozy home that you want it to be. It is a different matter that you don't clean the house every day to begin with, making the cleaning job all the more difficult, expensive and time consuming. Because it looks like a dumpster at the moment.

Moving on to the activities. You need to entertain him. You can't just sit and chat, he's a celebrity for Christ's sake. You're definitely going to make your children show him the coolest tricks they know. You're going to show him what you own, and how you like to live your life.

Now most importantly, the food. The meal, the dinner. It's Thanksgiving, remember? You drive 50 miles to get the best, the juiciest, the most delicious looking turkey, and other kinds of assorted rare meat. For your wife to marinate in a host of expensive dressings, so that the meat soaks in the flavors overnight. She cooks it at just the right temperature for just the right amount of time. Everything is ready on the day. You haven't missed out on a single thing. Sure, you've ended up spending a little more than what your budget was, but it doesn't matter. One doesn't normally have the honor of hosting such an important celebrity, especially on such an auspicious occasion.

All this, ALL of this, only to find out that your dream celebrity has turned vegan!

So he'll come alright. He'll talk to you, take selfies with you, watch your children perform, and clap after they're done. But he'll leave before eating.

This is exactly how Narendra Modi must be feeling right now. You are that celebrity, Mr. President. You are the biggest celebrity India will ever host. But you're leaving without visiting the Taj Mahal, India's most prized turkey.

Heck, hoping to become BFF's with the First Lady, Smriti Irani had even jotted down the handicraft stores in Agra where she would've taken her

Not joking. Thousands of crores have been spent. A 400-hundred kilometer radius no-fly zone has been enforced. That is massive for a country with the second largest population in the world. Additionally, seven layers of security, sniffer dogs (not the Desi sniffer dogs Dharmendra feasts on, but the ones imported from the US), and 3 layers of security before food gets served. All this and more, for your safety. And you don't want to travel to Agra because the fog might compromise your security.

Men with slingshots have fanned out in the neighborhood around Rashtrapati Bhavan, shrieking and barking in an effort to frighten away hundreds of rosy-bottomed monkeys. Beggars have been requested to move out and come back after Tuesday. Thousands of CCTVs have been installed just for your security. A woman is raped every minute, and the government doesn't have the budget to prevent it. But for you, Mr. President, we've miraculously installed over 15,000 CCTVs at important locations.

Agra, until now, had been going absolutely crazy. They were going through a makeover they had never seen before. In fact, a few Agra residents, who were not aware of the situation, actually thought that this was because of the 'Swachch Bharat' campaign. Retards. In order to 'sanitize' the city, municipal cow catchers were ordered to round up stray cattle that amble down the city's thoroughfares. The hunt for the perfect guide for you, Mr. President, and the First Lady, is bigger than any Swayamvar you have ever seen on the idiot box. In fact, US officials have met with 15 guides till now.

These days were seriously Achche Din. People got employment. Even if it meant being employed for this:

Despite this, Mr. President, thank you. Thank you for saying 'yes' to our invitation. Thank you for getting our roads cleaned. Thank you for getting the capital of the world's largest democracy cleaned. Thank you for finally getting more CCTVs installed. Thank you for having more security on the streets. Thank you for helping our women feel safer. Thank you. Because we had forgotten what our home really looked like.

Thank you

US President Barack Obama is finally in India, but it is Wing Commander Pooja Thakur of the Indian Air Force who has emerged as Sunday's shining star as she marched two steps behind the US President during the Guard of Honour inspection at Rashtrapati Bhavan.

This is the first time that a female officer of the Air Force has led the Guard of Honour at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Thakur's moment of pride came as 'nari shakti' (woman power) is the theme for the Republic Day Parade this year where Obama is the chief guest.

US requests India to keep Rajdeep Sardesai away from Republic Day venue,

According to The UnReal Times sources, the US has requested India to keep Rajdeep Sardesai away from Republic Day venue citing security concerns. The highest levels of Indian security establishment are currently studying US request.

While assessing the threat perception to Obama during the Indian Republic Day events, the Secret Service – tasked with protecting the President of the United States – is learnt to have taken cognizance of Rajdeep’s conduct at Madison Square Garden last year.

One of the senior officers of Secret Service, speaking to The UnReal Times on the condition of anonymity said, “Not only is there potential for violence but there was also a huge chance of Rajdeep jumping on to Obama at any moment and handing him his book 2014 to get photographed with him. In fact, Rajdeep has gone right to the top of our list of security concerns.”

Rejecting the rumours, Rajdeep said that Obama’s security is targeting a secular journalist like him to appease the Hindutva Nationalist icon Narendra Modi. “Is this the dawn of another Emergency in India pushed by communal Hindutva agents and backed by America led by a lame duck President? Will India stand up against this threat to Freedom of speech and expression?, ” he asked, frothing at the mouth.

Sagarika immediately took to twitter thrashing Obama and tweeted, “Obama is just jealous of how successful Rajdeep is. Someone like Obama can never dream of matching the achievements of Rajdeep. I can only pity Michelle Obama for the choices she has made in her life.”

When reached for a comment, NSA Ajit Doval said that they are actively considering the US request but can’t divulge any information as yet. Interestingly, while showing us out, Doval gave us a knowing smile and lit up another cigarette. We think we got the answer.

Talking glowingly about his "good friendship" with US President Barack Obama and how it had brought the people of India and US closer, Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed him by his first name "Barack" more than once while Obama, in response, was less informal and addressed him as "Modi" or "prime minister"."Barack and I have forged a friendship. There is openness when we talk on the phone and we also crack jokes," Modi said.

"This chemistry has brought Barack closer to me but also brought the people of India and America closer" he added.

"I'm fairly new in this area but relations between countries depends less on full stops, commas, and more on the personal chemistry between the leaders. I think this chemistry is very important and will only grow," he said further.

Obama too agreed with Modi and said their friendship reflected the "warmth" between the two countries.
"In addition to the personal friendship that we have built in a brief amount of time we are reflecting the warmth between the people of India and US," Obama said.

"We compared hours of sleep. It turns out that Modi is even getting less sleep than me. That's because he is still new," Obama said much to the amusement of the media persons.

Rich culinary traditions from Kashmir to West Bengal were spread out in the lavish banquet in honour visiting US President Barack Obama at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Sunday.

Famous signature meat preparations from the Valley, Kashmiri Gushtaba, tender meat balls made with a complex mix of spices, and aromatic Rogan Josh were specially prepared by Rashtrapati Bhavan chefs to tickle the palate of the visiting dignitaries.

A medley of songs from Hawai, where Obama was born and raised, including chants like 'Kawika', Michael Jackson hit number 'We Are the World' and Stevie Wonder's 'Part Time Lover' besides number of Hindi and English songs provided much needed soothing atmosphere to the dignitaries after a hectic day of parlays.
