Uniform Civil Code: There's total confusion, why don't you frame it, SC asks Centre

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the central government to come up with a quick decision on uniform civil code to put an end to the continuing confusion over personal laws governing religious practices.

A bench headed by justice Vikramjit Sen told solicitor general Ranjit Kumar, "There is total confusion? we should work on the Uniform Civil Code. What happened to it? If you (government) want to do it, then you should do it. Why don't you frame and implement it."

in July, the top court had asked the Ministry of Law and Justice to file its reply and decide on the issue of amendment of sub Section (1) of Section 10A of the Divorce Act.

The apex court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by a Delhi-based man, challenging the legal provision that compels Christian couples to wait for at least two years for divorce, whereas this period of separation is one year for other religions.

That will be challenge for Modi government.
It was great to talk about it when BJP was in opposition, but now it is up to them.
Personally I would like to see a uniform Civil Code in India.

Uniform Civil Code (UCC) will never come as long as minority rights are protected by the Constitution. The only way out will be when a hindutva party gets two-thirds majority in both Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha and that day is far, far away!

If at all the Govt. at the Centre is really interested in Uniform Civil Code, it must invite all political parties and eminent persons from all fields to have broad-based discussions, explaining the advantages of having Uniform Civil Code. Without a proper discussion, the Govt. cannot move even one step forward.

But, in reality, it has become a political slogan for some decades now.
