TTD may stop freebies for foot pilgrims on weekends

TIRUMALA: In order to regulate the flow of devotees at the Seven Hills, the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has on an experimental basis decided not to extend benefits like free Divya Darshan tokens and laddu to pilgrims who trek up the hill on foot beginning this Saturday and Sunday. This way, TTD thinks, it can lessen the rush at the shrine.

"On an experimental basis, darshan will not be provided this Saturday and Sunday for the foot pilgrims who are provided Divya Darshan free tokens," TTD joint executive officer (JEO) K Sreenivasa Raju told the media here on Tuesday. If such a measure ends up streamlining the flow of devotees during the weekends when the temple witnesses heavy rush, the TTD management might consider continuing with it, he added.

Nearly 15,000 pilgrims on weekdays and about 25,000 devotees on weekends trek up on foot for darshan. Such devotees are provided Divya Darshan tokens which assure them of 'darshan' as well as free accommodation, locker facility and one laddu.
