Tiger kills man in Delhi zoo


NEW DELHI: In a hair-raising incident, witnessed by scores and captured live on many cameras, a 200kg white tiger mauled and killed a youth after he fell into the animal's moat in the Delhi zoo, eyewitnesses and officials said on Tuesday.

The incident, which took place between 12.30pm and 1pm, created a sensation and word soon spread through the city, with photos and video of the tiger — one of the zoo's star attractions — dragging the youth going viral.

Eyewitnesses and zoo officials said the young man, who was later identified as Maksood, 20, a resident of Anand Parbat in Delhi, had "crossed the stand-off barrier" of the white tiger's enclosure and then fell or jumped into the moat which separated the enclosure from the visitors' gallery.

The majestic six-foot, seven-year-old tiger, named Vijay, which was some distance away, saw the man in the concrete moat, that was covered with dry leaves, and bounded up to him.

Delhi Zoo on Wednesday said it was victim's fault to have gone into the tiger enclosure that resulted in the animal mauling the man.


The zoo informed that officials from Central Zoo Authority and the Environment Ministry visited the Delhi zoo and reviewed security arrangements. More security arrangements will be made if deemed necessary.


In a spine-chilling incident, a 20-year-old youth was on Tuesday mauled to death by a white tiger when he fell into its enclosure at the Delhi Zoo.
Video footage of the horrific incident caught on mobile phone cameras by visitors showed that Vijay, the seven-year-old tiger, was initially clueless when he found the youth in his enclosure and both of them stood face to face for several minutes.


The incident also brought to the fore the lack of quick response mechanism in the zoo to rescue a person from such a situation by tranquilising the animal or by any other method.


The Delhi Zoo issued a statement on Tuesday claiming the man, did not slip and fall into the enclosure, but had "jumped into it".


The National Zoological Park said the enclosure was designed as per the standards laid down by the Central Zoo Authority of India.


"All the enclosures of the National Zoological Park are absolutely safe. No visitor can reach the moat wall of the enclosure without the stand-off barrier. The visitor crossed the stand-off barrier and ultimately jumped into the enclosure which led to his death by the tiger," the statement said.


Terming the incident "unfortunate", the statement said immediately after the visitor, 20-year-old Maqsood, a resident of Anand Parbat area, jumped into the enclosure, a guard posted there sounded an alarm.


"Praveen, the guard posted at the enclosure, sounded an alarm and collected his supervisor and other staff of the zoo by sending wireless SOS message," the zoo said.


"Praveen along with other staff of the zoo tried to divert the attention of the tiger from the visitor but to no avail."

Delhi zoo is almost an open zoo.

Now they have decided to raise a barricade wall of more height.

they could have used tranquilisers.

when my wife visited a zoo in argentina , she got herself photographed with a tiger cub in her arms .

I suspect it was tranquilised.

not to go near the wall to slip / jump into the enclosure and should have dragged him away!

Actually it seemed that the tiger did not attack at 1st but after the crowd started to make noise the tiger became agitated.

The guy was also sitting down and his response seemed a bit abnormal..he was trying to talk to the tiger and then trying to shoo away the tiger..may be he was frozen with fear.

Who wont?

Some say he had a tiger obsession.

Poor guy.

In Malaysia...the National Zoo has no real high wall for its tiger..But it has a deep pond before the gated zone..so even if the tiger tries to climb out..it wont be possible becos he wont have solid base to jump when it is in the water.

But if someone tries to climb in..the person will fall into the water..so now one would really want to get wet.

That way its stops people from getting in and the tiger from getting out.

JAIPUR: With Tuesday's incident of a tiger killing a boy, who had entered its enclosure at the Delhi zoo, caution was the key word at the Jaipur zoo on Wednesday especially near the cage of the big cat. Extra vigil was maintained near its cage while visitors too were careful and didn't go close to it.

Since morning, the zoo officers and caretakers were extra vigilant. They were seen inspecting every corner of the place, especially tiger, leopard and bear enclosures. In fact, a caretaker at the tigers' enclosures was repeatedly issuing verbal warning to visitors to maintain distance from the cages and not throw anything on the animals.

Even warnings like those find guilty of violating any laws will be booked and sent to jail were being given by the caretakers. The guards at the entry point were also ensuring that those entering the zoo are not carrying any food articles or water bottles.

The news of the Delhi incident spread like wild fire and many of the visitors in Jaipur zoo were aware of it. Those who came with children were extra cautious at the zoo. Malini Sharma, a teacher of Modern School in Pali, who was here with 30 children on an educational trip, was seen teaching students about the precautionary measures they must take.

"I have got a call from the principal to be alert while visiting the zoo, especially the tiger's zone. She told me the school has received calls from parents after they watched the news of the killing asking what security measures were being undertaken by us while visiting the zoo," said Sharma.

Even families who were visiting the zoo were talking about the killing and were seen monitoring the behavior of their wards. "Our zoo is well prepared to not allow any such incident to take place. Our guards monitor the movement of both visitors and tigers and continuously warn visitors to not break any law," said Akanksha Chaudhary, deputy conservative forest wildlife, Jaipur zoo

A caretaker who handles visitors said the biggest problem is to handle unruly students rather than the animals, who are more disciplined. Even after we have pictorial description and written warnings for both illiterates and literates, we can find them teasing animals. "It is also true that mostly they try to tease tigers, leopards and jackals," said zoo caretaker.
