Every star does not have a success story to tell like Amitabh Bachchan whom stardom embraced like its own child. From the angry young man to the sexy old uncle, Amitabh Bachchan has miraculously managed to stay under the spotlight for all these years. Unfortunately, unlike Big B there are many stars who faded into oblivion as fast as they hit limelight.
In fact beneath the glittering and ever so happening world of Bollywood there lies a side not found in any glossy film magazine. While its world of instant fame is hailed, its flip side, the fall to anonymity hardly stirs any news.
For instance Actress Antara Mali's father, famous photographer Jagdish Mali was spotted begging on the Mumbai streets. He was rescued by model Mink and sent to his home in Salman Khan's car. This is just one example. There are many such heart wrenching stories. From acute depression to extreme state of poverty to suicides - Bollywood has seen it all.
Lets us have a look at Bollywood personalities who slipped off stardom to a state of misery.
Vimi:
She made her debut in B.R. Chopra's Hamraaz in 1967 despite being married to Marwari businessman Shiv Agarwal. Once she became successful, her husband began to increasingly interfere in her work and dictate terms to producers. This eventually led to the couple's separation. Disowned by her conservative Punjabi family for marrying a Marwari, Vimi was suddenly left with no professional or emotional support when even filmmakers started avoiding her because of their bad experiences with her husband. She started living with small-time producer Jolly, which again proved harmful for her career. Penury and alcoholism took over and she spent her last few days in the general ward of Nanavati Hospital. She was in her thirties when she died on August 22, 1977. The world was shocked to know that her body was taken for cremation on a chanawalla's thela.
Bharat Bhushan:
Many feel Bharat's tragic affair with Meena Kumari led to his downfall. Also, despite making hay in his heyday, he was not known to save much. Once the offers stopped coming, he found himself with no money. He reportedly worked as a watchman in a film studio and did miniscule roles on TV and in small budget films in his last days. He died in a rented flat in 1992.
Achala Sachdev:
Balraj Sahni's 'Zohrajabeen' died a painful death. She was totally ignored by her son who lived in the US and daughter who lived in Pune. When died in a Pune hospital niether family nor friends were by her side. Rajiv Nanda, a close family friend of Sachdev, said that he had been contacting people from the film fraternity and updating them about Sachdev's heath. However, he complained that there were no attendants to take care of her at the hospital
AK Hangal:
Hangal had been active in films since 1967 and played on-screen father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle to many top notch Bollywood actors but at the 95 years, Avtar Kishan Hangal, aka A K Hangal among old age ailments also battled acute poverty. When he passed away his home Saraswati Mansion in Santacruz (East), where he lived with his 74-year-old son, Vijay, was dilapidated and needed immediate renovation. But neither Hangal, who was bed ridden, or his son, who suffers from a unbearable back trouble were in any position to do that as every day was a fight for them to pay for medicines
