it should give us a pause to think. are we really as successful as we believe ourselves to be? i used to have a close relative, in baroda. he worked for IOC there. all his gujju colleagues had a business on the side, and would always ask him if he had a relative who needed a job?

per my relative, the gujjus preferred to hire south indians, because we are happy to have a 9 to 5 job, no risks taking and would never dream of opening a competing business after knowing the tricks of the trade. :)

this article is an eye opener and how the economist views the gujaratis

world's best business people

I totally agree with your views. A TB working as a peon in natinalised bank would be offered more than one girl ( that too higher educated) where as one who is self employed and has decent income with property etc would be refused. This is how our community looks upon their brethern. The current generation elders who had a primitive tapered view were totally responsible for the downward of our community. Now the situation is such that our community boys and girls do not prefer each other but from other communities. Current generation of TBs can never shrug off their rotten view (9x5 secured job) and wont support TBs into business ventures. So Gujaratis & marwaris only can florish.

Gujarathis are good in building business relations...They will not miss a money making opportunity....They are not as cunning as Marwaris and will be more than happy to help someone in need!

Are Tamilians especially Bs not performing Lakshmi Pooja? Will mere performing Lakshmi Pooja bring wealth? I think it is nothing but superstition to the core.

Both gujaratis and marwaris are doing roaring business everywhere. when comming to humanity, the gujaratis are a bit more kind hearted and more humane than marwaris who are less humane or cut throat policied people. On the other hand, when you compare gujaratis, marwaris & TBs who all does lakshmi puja and measure in the prosperity and happiness index, TBs stand at top and all others come at the bottom.

We, TBs are more happy and prosperous with whatever we have. All others inspite of having each and every confort at their feet, are not that much happier or prosperous in their life.

Kupper venda kuda michele manna ottalai.

What is happiness, and who is happier? Very subjective. TB are very serious bunch any where they go. Look at punjabis and gujaraties for fun.

All our Brahmins, are fully aware that we are not for doing Business , Vice Versa Gujarathis are not for the types of Jobs we do. No need to compare & belittle ourselves. This situation mentioned above is almost extinct. What I want to stress i that the present generation o both men& women do know how to progress in life, securing lucrative Jobs in Computer line & surpass other communities. Families on the whole are very much happy duly achieving their desires & mostly keeping their own parents happy esp. in U.S where each one copy the other in ensuring comforts to their parents What else one would aspire? Let us enjoy all comforts ,shedding the old , conservative thoughts & come out in the open & openly congratulate your children , for what all they do for you
Caution:= If you fail to enjoy your life by spending for quenching yor life desires, the Money saved would be wasted & regret in old age?

What better way for the Gujarathis to show their mercantile superiority than by heading the East India Company!

Considering how well the Gujaratis did out of the empire, it seems only natural that a Jain from Palanpur, Sanjiv Mehta, should now own the East India Company itself. He snapped up the moribund company in 2005 and has opened a posh store bearing its name in London’s West End. It sells fine crockery, traditional marmalades and, inevitably, tea. To guilty Britons the company is redolent of imperial exploitation, but to Mr Mehta it is more of a brand “known all over the world, the Google of its age”. The world’s first joint-stock company has come round full circle.

East India Company returns after 135-year absence

  • 13 August 2010

An Indian entrepreneur is relaunching the famous East India Company with the opening of a luxury food store in London on Saturday.
The event takes place on the same day that - more than 135 years ago - the company was dissolved.
At the height of its power, the East India Company controlled large parts of India with its own armed forces.
But it was disbanded after soldiers of the company's own army rose in revolt against the British in 1857.
A tiny rump of the company lived on, however, consisting of its trading name and a small tea and coffee concern.
This shadow of what was once a global trading power was acquired in 2005 by Indian businessman Sanjiv Mehta, who has turned it into a consumer brand focused on luxury foodstuffs.
He told the BBC that the project was not simply a commercial venture - there was an emotional connection too.
Image caption The East India Company's early activities focused on trading in tea, cotton and silk "It is a dream come true to build a business like this and to acquire a brand like this to own the company," he said.
Mr Mehta dismissed fears that the reappearance of a company long associated with colonialism would open old wounds, insisting he had been inundated with messages of support from his compatriots.
"It's a disproportionate joy, [I have received] more than 15,000 e-mails [of support] from various Indians across India, even from Barbados to Fiji to Canada to Boston."
The entrepreneur, who moved to Britain around 20 years ago, says that he has acquired a 400-year-old brand already known to millions of people around the world.
At its peak, the company employed a third of the British workforce and was responsible for a huge tranche of global trade.
Mr Mehta hopes eventually to make a return to India to tap the market for luxury goods in one of the world's fastest expanding economies.
The company was created by the granting of a charter from Queen Elizabeth I in 1600 and given a monopoly on English trade to Asia. Its early business activities focused on cotton, silk and tea.
Mr Mehta's shop in London is stocked with 350 luxury products, including 100 varieties of tea, chocolates, spices and mustards developed by the company from across the world.

The subjective happiness and materialistic wealth ....travel many a miles in parallel track. They too meet sometimes in blue moon.
