The Tag Heuer Watch: $300 hardware in a $1500 smartwatch

Luxury and technology are two very different spheres, and when buying a product, you usually focus on one, and compromise on the other. Buying a cutting-edge product does not mean that you are buying a luxury product, and buying an expensive product does not mean that you are getting the best of what technology has to offer.

Take Vertu, for example, which often packs a bit outdated technology into its smartphones, which retail for thousands of dollars. Smartphones costing a lot less pack in the same or better innards, and you won’t be getting thousands of dollars worth of technology in a Vertu product. You are mainly paying for the materials, the craftsmanship and the exclusivity, and it is these three fields that Tag Heuer is hoping to capitalize upon with the Tag Heuer Connected watch, which is the watchmaker’s first smartwatch.

It is made out of titanium, and its screen is protected with sapphire glass. It runs Android Wear, and has a dual-core Intel Atom processor running at 1.6 Ghz paired with 1GB of RAM and a 1.5 inch transreflective display with a 360×360 pixel resolution. It has 4GB of internal storage and a 410mAh battery that will supposedly last a whole day. It charges wirelessly, and is IP67 water-resistant.

It is bundled with a unique app that brings you news of exclusive watchface partnerships. There are a few preloaded apps supposedly optimized for this watch.

It costs $1500, and while it doesn’t offer anything different from a much cheaper smartwatch in terms of technology, the materials and the brand are perhaps worth $1500, at least according to Tag Heuer. If you later decide that you would rather have a mechanical watch, then you can convert the watch into an intricate mechanical watch for a cool $1500.

What do you think? Can Android Wear smartwatches be considered luxury watches?
