Tattoos Can Lead To Chronic Skin Problems: Study
May, 28, 2015,
Tattoos can cause skin problems such as infection, itching, redness and swelling over the years, according to a new study. Some of these problems can linger for a long time.
For every ten people who get tattoos, one will develop such problems, according to the study, published in the June issue of the Contact Dermatitis journal.
"I'm not anti-tattoo at all; I happen to think tattoos are beautiful," said dermatologist and co-author Dr. Marie Leger of the New York University Langone Medical Center in New York City. Leger, however, warns that "there are certain risks" to getting tattoos.
For the study, Leger's team interviewed 300 people with tattoos randomly chosen in Central Park in New York.
About 10 percent of the respondents said they had experienced problems with their tattoos. Some of these people had temporary complications, like having bacterial infections immediately after getting their tattoos, as well as itching and swelling.
Six out 10 people who reported having problems, meanwhile, suffered from recurring issues. However, few of these people consulted with physicians regarding the complications, according to the researchers.
The team also found that while tattoo artists and parlors in the US are regulated, the inks they use do not necessarily undergo scrutiny.
"Tattoo inks aren't very closely regulated in the United States," Leger told Live Science.
Studies done in Europe have found that black ink often includes carbon-based pigments, whereas the red ones have nitrogen-compound-bearing "azo-based hues."
Although it was not clear in all cases what causes the problems, the researchers found that some people who get tattoos are allergic to them.
"Some of the stories we got definitely sound like tattoo allergy. They'll have a red tattoo, and then a few years later, they will get a new tattoo - and, all of a sudden, the new red and the old red tattoo become itchy and raised," Leger said.
The dermatologist said people do not seem to mind the problems that may arise after getting a tattoo.
"I don't think anyone gets a tattoo because it's totally safe; I think people do it because it's culturally a little bit rebellious," Leger said.
She suggests seeing a specialist when tattoo complications arise. In some instances, a safe tattoo removal may be necessary, she said.
