[Need Clarification] Starting Amavasai Tharpanam and Mahalaya Paksha Tharpanam

My aged father died in Apr-2023 (Pradhamai Thithi) while my aged mother is still alive. I'm their only child and did the Unamasikam, Masikam and Varushapthigam on respective timelines.

I was initially told I should not start the monthly Amavasai Tharpanams & the annual Mahalaya Paksha Tharpanam, as long as my mother is still alive. So based on that advice, I had Rice & Vazhakai dhanam done yesterday at the start of Mahalaya Paksham.

But various article I read about Mahalaya Paksham in the internet state it is very important to perform Mahalaya Paksha Tharpanam, even if mother is alive. So requesting inputs to clear my confusion.
  1. When should a Kartha start Amavasai Tharpanam and Mahalaya Paksha Tharpanam?
  2. If Mahalaya Paksha Tharpanam is to done by me this year - (given that 2 of the 16 days & especially Pradhamai is already over) - which day(s) should I now plan to do in this year?
Thanking in advance for your clarification 🙏

A similar doubt came up for me also. My father passed away March 2024. Mother is alive. Varushaptheegam not yet over. Maseegam and Una maseegams going on as per schedule. But my vadyar advised me to start monthly Amavasya tarpanams right away, without waiting for one year completion as it is allowed and it is advisable also. The general opinion is Tarpanams start only after one year. I did not want to break my head too much into this and went by my Vadyar's advice and doing the monthly tarpanams now. As regards whether tarpanam, srardharm etc can be done if mother is alive, yes, very much. They should be done.
